- When we get "Smart hard disk drive ERROR" message, it means your hard disk is totally bad, or maybe is not "bad". If it was just lossing speed, you can use it in another laptop or desktop without Smart function, or to put the disk in an external enclosure to use it as a back up unit for a while.

You are right, it's not necessarily totally broken, if one maybe wants to recover data still has chances and if not very keen on everything working perfect. You can still adjust a lot of performance settings so that is usable to some degree.

i took my laptop to get installed excel since that day i keep getting this error, everytme is freezes and this message keeps coming out also i have notices my laptop has been acting really slow...you guys think he open my laptop and changed my harware drive or this happen when excel is beng installed.? need some advice...my latop was new till now and im having my doubts...

I just tried to re install a new windows thus my windows was not boot with this error showed up unfortunately. But it booted slowely after the new windows fortunately bu it's slow i thin so, as u said. ReAlly thnk u man. :)
You are welcome! I am sorry for your problem. But I am happy you applied a temporary fixing, to go forward. Most of the time problem is the hard disk. Another times, the problem can be main board in the hard disk controller. BUT, also, pay attention to the ventilation system, if the computer heats and gets slow. ;-)
So that happened already the the laptop gets over heated for several hours and thece the problem 301 appeared
Nop! The actual problem is hardware problem in the hard disk, or main board. But also, an over heating can generate consequences as your problem. Another example of it, is the overheating of smartphones in summer season. After it, a lot of them ends with bad capacitors, and bad charging chips,ready to visit the workshop for real repairing o board changing. In laptops or desktops, the problem can be the hard disk´s motor, its control chip, bad capacitors on main board or hard disk.
(The problem can trigger by itself after some use, but also it can happen because collapsed ventilation, letting the high temperature to damage component as the ones mentioned).
but a real fix is how ?? change a Hard disk or ?
You will need a real electronics technician and not a bad service computer shop. We don't know if the problem is the hard disk drive or the main board. (Most of the time it is the hard disk). I recorded other two videos about one Lenovo laptop slow, and a the last one for time about a dead computer because a bad SMD capacitor. If it is not the hard disk, and your problem is in the main board, you will need to look for a technician or electronics engineer with the same repairing skills to solve your problem.

What he said did didn't help at all. All you have to do for this is just either A, buy a new hard drive disk, or B if its a sever issue, you have to get a new laptop.

This notice appear exactly AFTER reinstalling new HD on HP laptop. New HD absolutely normal, I checked it before and after - zero bads and zero errors. Instal Win 10 on this HD, everything - OK. How to skip this notice?

How to stop hard disk failure error on windows in registry
Hard drive issue start happening after windows upgraded to windows 10 and then they decided to the eraser the old operating system XP, Vista, Windows 7, and their program which cause many issues that led to Hard drive 301 failing. The only option was to get a new hard drive and reinstall windows 10, without the Vista or Windows 7 programming. There was a lot of software on vista and 7 that is never on windows 10. The new window 10 notebook and tablets do not have a hard drive but a small storage chip. That has caused massive issues in the windows because of the program. Downloading the wrong one cause this. If you download the windows 10 that need storage chip. You will get errors. So you are told to get all your documents and transfer to the newest notebook or tablets out there because they will no longer make them that way it even have DVD/cd drive. You have to use USB. They do not have any support for old windows operating system that was upgraded. They still get feedback on your windows for whatever you use it for so they can send an update to reduce errors. Like, get new software install not from window and windows and gaming program.
They know what you are doing on your device and where you are installing your software from. So they can fix issues they say but with millions of people, they often have millions of problems because people don't do the same thing as others do.

Hi! Yes I changed it. In one PC the hard disk didn't work. But in the other PC the hard disk works without problems. It is because once the hard disk loses speed, and computers with smart alarm refuses to use it. But it was welcome in a computer without SMART DISK ERROR SYSTEM. You can use that disk for a while, or use it to transfer data for a while. You can't trust your disk anymore, because you know know it is going to die. But the disk from the video useful. I used in other laptop until now days, and the video was recorded at the end of 2015.

It is a hardware problem, and detected by new function in the BIOS in the newest computers. With the old computers, we can use the hard disk until it lasts 2 or 4 extra years. But with the new computers with SMART function, as soon as the disk gets old, they force us to replace it. Sadly, if the problem is an electronic component in the main board, then only a good electronics technician or engineer can solve it.
We need a good programmer able to decode the BIOS, and turn SMART off. It will be a good upgrade market!

hold esc on power on if HP, enter if lenovo/ibm (trigger alt startup menu). Else certain laptops use f2 for bios. As well you can look up "(Your Model) bios key"

Hi! Overheating and shut down problem is related with collapsed ventilation system. It can be fixed on time by cleaning well the computer. But the S.M.A.R.T. hard disk alarm is related with defective hardware in the hard disk or main board. We are talking about two different problems here. A bad mother board or bad hard disk can be the consequence of do not clean the computer. Try first the professional cleaning by a good electronics technician. He will fix the hardware if it is fixable. "Fast food" Computer shops services are not good, because they have a wonderful Windows installer guy able to change boards, but most of them lack of real electronics technician.

Remove your battery. Let your pc cool down. Later press the power button for a minute to draw the extra current in the pc. All of this must be done without battery. Put the charger in and start your pc without battery. It will work

My HP laptop has been upgraded three months ago with an SSD from my old HDD and it showed great performance ... but then this happened for about 1 week already.. pls help me i also visited numerous youtube tutorials and none really resolve my issues,
I also opened the hardware of my laptop and checked the placement of my ssd, unplugged and plugged the connections but still same error ocuured .... I dont know what to do now, there are no repair services due loockdown and our deadlines are approaching huhhu...

So I just tried plugging in my 320 GB hard disk drive into my MSI gaming laptop and it doesn’t pop up, but back in the computer it originally came in it’s passed a memory check but fails a hard drive check immediately and doesn’t pop up on my other computer, I think it’s a software issue because it has windows 10, I have yet to try putting windows seven or eight or even xp on it
You have to format it first me thinks and install it in the settings me thinms
how stupid can this comment section be lol, this video is to show that this "1720 error" does not 100% mean that you just dump your hard drive but actually you can still use it and he proved it on another laptop that doesn't have the smart function

That doesn't fix the error. You just swapped out the hard drive. This video sucks.

Why does this happen
It happens for various reasons all related to the drive reporting that an "essential" function has responded to the routine self test with either an error or null data. Smart fail by no means indicates that your drive will fail but it does indicate that a function may be damaged/not operating as expected.
Scott Haataja but why does it do that is there moving parts that go bad ? Like explain because as I see it no electronic should ever go out unless exposed to water or a power surge

Hi! Could be a failure in the laptop... But must of the time, the Error is because the hard disk gets old and reduces its speed. The video shows that a hard disk like that, (reducing rotation speed) can run well in other laptop without smart disk RPM detection, or the disk can be use as external disk for a while. So far, what you have to do is to try other hard disk in your laptop to ensure there is not fail in the computer, and it just was a hard disk speed detection alarm.

Yes. You didn't pay attention! In one PC the SMART ERROR is generated, but the same hard disk works fine in other pc without smart system. Meaning the Smart Alert is just accusing the disk lost performance, but the disk is usable in other computer without Smart Hard Disk Drive Alert. :-)
The point being that the failing HDD can still be used for a short while as an external back up. Although I wouldn't trust it with anything valuable.
Mine just showed the error yesterday. I did just what you said. So far its still working, but I'm expecting it to fail.
