Lpg seemed to lose its appeal at one point when it’s price was similar to other fuels. But now that petrol and diesel is so dear, suddenly the lpi falcon would sell like hot cakes if it were still around. Maybe that’s why they didn’t sell as many as it seems they should’ve. Cheers for the content mate haven’t missed one for over a year !
appreciate the support 🙏 and completely right! When fuel was under a dollar who cared.. but now at closer to 2 dollars and diesel we’ll over… this is a massive saver
I dunno about other states but in WA, LPG stations are getting fewer and further between. Range anxiety is the main issue. I think LPG started to lose its appeal when the hybrid Camry became mainstream and most taxi operators chose them over LPG.
from memory i think it was when petrol went to 1.10 and gas was 80 or 90 cents i remember all the taxi guys saying theres no point to bbq conversion coz the gas does less kms to the litre
@@jigglypuff2562 No , when petrol was $1.10 gas was 65c & then petrol $1.50 gas still 65c . Lpg is around 1/3 less efficient than petrol economy wise , so the math then becomes easy , as long as petrol is more than 1/3 more , your winning . On average over 17 years of owning a dedicated lpg AU wagon , running lpg has saved us on average between $4 & $7 per hundred Kay’s , so don’t try & tell us that lpg is not worth it long term , saving between 4 & 7 grand every hundred thousand Kay’s is not chicken feed & that saving can then be said to have paid for all maintenance & servicing of our car & because we do a lot of it ourselves that’s even better again . Still need a car with heaps of room ( wagon can fit 11’ fishing rod inside ) can tow a couple of tonne easy & is comfortable on long trips . Only downside is shell pulled all lpg bowsers Australia wide & the servos that still sell it tend to run dry during the week , so range anxiety does come into it , with the wagons twin tanks you get around 90 litres but in sedans that is reduced to approx 60 ? I believe , so some long trips may need to be planned or just fill up more often where available.
@@barbraabsalom4531 bro chill I’m not trying to tell u anything, it’s just what I think knew, chill and thanks for the cool info I only travel 8000 kms a year
Only just seeing this 3 months later but Ross let me tell you i drove from Melbourne to Mildura (550kms) on a single full tank and still had just under half a tank left in my 09 LPG FG - these things are Australias biggest secret
Agree mines bit older an thats were can be probs, with lpg. That said brought it 5 months ago so never had a chance to look after it an the lpg stuff. But yer i drove 4 hours motorway had lot over half. Thanx
Great review, yet another highly underrated Falcon, everything you said you hit the nail on the head, everyone has branded Falcons for being "not fuel efficient" but if you drive them right they are great on the juice....plus they make up for the extra fuel in super cheap cost of maintenance!
LOL i havent found maintenance on the usual Ford parts to be cheap mainly suspension and brakes 2005 model has cost me a motza in the 13 years i,ve owned an RTV dedicated gas car.other than that it's $$ economy on country trips is fantastic 100 litres capacity and about 650 k's if i want to push it.
Yer i brought a 2010 wagon its buetyfull cruiser now but yer had to rebuild the converter lota stuff just neglected. And was alot to fix. But yer love it now cheers'
My 08 tradesman ute Barra gas has 620,000kms runs great with standard maintenance, just less an less stations carry LPG now which really can be frustrating
I have 3 x BF3 Wagons and one BF3 as a donor car on factory LPG and about 10 converter rebuild kits sitting on the shelf. 2 cars are dailys and one is kept in reserve for when one of the daily's fails for good. At 900K's for 100 litres I am laughing.
I share your frustration LPG has 63% less NOX emmissions than petrol, seems like decreasing pollution is just a bunch of mindless sheep bleating all at once in Cantberra all a sham.
Love my 2014 XR6 EcoLpi. North Brisbane has enough LPG, and much cheaper compared to diesel. A shame it was never marketed well. It also has fantastic performance. A week ago I paid 94c per litre.
Hi Ross. Great review/overview of the FG MK2 XR6 EcoLPI. I have a 2013 version here in Perth and has been a pretty good car. A few issues I have found here in Perth for such cars are (may not apply to eastern states): * Yes stations for LPG are less and less every day, especially in the country areas. If you look at fuel watch you can't comfortably drive from Perth to Kalgoorlie with adequate LPG stops along the way. * While yes electric cars you eventually need to replace batteries, for LPG cars you are required to get the LPG tank tested very 10 years. Mine will be due next year and will likely cost about $1000-$1200. * While the Fords dealers in Perth will be happy to do general servicing of your LPG Ford, they will NOT TOUCH ANY of the LPG side of the car. Which means there is also NO support by Ford to get your tank testing done by them. I emailed directly to Ford Aus with no answer (other than please call us). I have found one place in Perth that specializes in LPG cars but if anyone can suggest others in Perth or know of any of the Ford dealers that give ANY support, please let me know..
True that have some draw backs but if they were normalised again all that would have been solved.. much better to pay $1000 for a new tank every 10 years than pay $20k for a new battery
I had a by commodore wagon on LPG, had a donut tank in the spare wheel well. I got the 10 year pressure retest done for a RWC for about $300 here in Victoria
@@RossReviewsauhere in Warrnambool Victoria we have 2 tank testing places one is the dive shop where aquatic divers tanks must be tested, they charge up to about $400.00 the biggest cost is a new valve that they MUST put in. It's a skam because the line lock cuts the gas when you need to work on the converter or the filter although that in ten years may only be half a dozen times the tap might need to be turned off as a precaution. How many taps will be worn out after being turned off 6 or even ten times? Some valves are charged out at $300.00 others can be only 80.00 and with the RRP for the check for rust the total was $150.00. I have an 1986 Toyota HiAce that was first installed with gas in 1992 I've only had it since 2013 and had to have it tested for a change of rego ownership then. I suspect it was the first tank test so now 30 years on its good as new or they won't pass it.
Ross, I watched your review to try to understand why? I 100% agree with you and share the exact same thinking on the car and the LPG system. It's still got me stuffed.... Why, why, why. Did this car not sell shit loads? It is the biggest missed segment in the Australian car market I have found to date and equates to a big loss for this country and many of its good people.
Love your work mate. I've had a AU and BF, both Utes, both LPG, both great workhorses . The great thing about Aussie cars was that a backyard enthusiast could do alot of the servicing. However the LPG system requires a "specialist" to look it over. Alot of the newer servos don't sell gas anymore which is a shame.
Great review of the EcoLPI, Ross. Very rare Victory Gold in that model. I always liked the colour in the FGX. Really good fuel economy but we find that not many service stations are selling gas in the Lower Hunter area anymore. Could be a problem finding a place to fill up in time to come. I wonder what the build date on this car is. As I seen someone share online that they bought a FG MK2 Victory Gold back in October and said it was built in March 2014. It was Dedicated Gas as well.
@@MartinJones123 Correct. It was built in March 2014 as the first Victory Gold paint test vehicle, and the only Victory Gold test vehicle in FG2 guise. Shortly after this was built they had the first lot of FGX test vehicles ready which was around the time they changed the roof skin on the late FG2s to accommodate the FGX roof aerial. The car was a company vehicle and kept for paint analysis from what I've heard, racking up over 10,000klms before being sold as a used car through the dealer network in January 2015.
The Lpi falcon was quicker then the petrol ones. They were detuned from 245kw back to 198kw. At 245kw they were just as quick to 70km/h then the xr6 Turbo falcon.
@@MartinJones123 Victoria is the cheapest state for LPG. Everywhere else its more expensive and many servo's are steering away from stocking it. They're not making the profit anymore as demand is low yet maintenance of the tanks is expensive. Yes you can convert the engine to unleaded only but obviously need to swap everything for the petrol engine.
I think people really didn't know how great those ecolpi engines were. That was because Ford simply didn't explain it to the general public. Very efficient and very reliable heaps of research and development went into them.
My dad has an fg green top lpg ute, it's been a great workhorse but he's been finding it harder to get lpg as alot of servos are ditching their gas tanks/pumps, also in was, so you wouldn't have had to go to the dark side of Australia to find one
I just bought a green top bf mk2 and I'm blown away. It does the job and it's great but the only issue is there is barely any locations selling lpg left over here on the west coast. Bunbury has 2 stations left. Perth has heaps. Definitely not getting across the Nullabor 😅 but kind of have to stick to the coast. Not much up North. Bit afraid to try drive it anywhere away from the coast because some of the fuel stations (petrol spy) show they haven't been updated in a month or so. Hard to tell who actually sells lpg anymore.
Ford has an EL falcon concept car called the Predator, built by John Bowe and Larry Perkins. Was a straight 6, supercharged running lpg and made 230kw. Orange too 😉
LPG is great since it's cheap and relatively clean though perhaps the biggest problem with LPG is that service stations are fazing it out, which means it's becoming harder to find LPG...
Use to be the sort engine to get, nowadays everyone is simply rebuilding ba blocks as it's cheaper to rebuild a ba for big power than buy a LPG to convert...
Another very good review! I own an FG Mk II Falcon G6E EcoLPI, and though I used to own BMW 6-series coupes, my G6E EcoLPI is the best car I’ve ever had. By the way, its excellent ZF 6HP26 6-speed automatic transmission is the same model as used in previous BMW 7-series cars, and a few other luxury cars. I believe it’s also stronger than the version of the 6HP that came fitted in the naturally-aspirated petrol “Barra” six powered FG X Falcons. Also, it doesn’t seem like the EcoLPI “Barra” six was available in a G6E after the Mk II. I agree with your sentiments about LPG being an excellent automotive fuel for Australia, and am concerned about its decline in availability … By the way, the EcoLPI’s liquid-phase-injection of LPG is computer controlled (EFI). LPI gives a boost effect, due to latent-heat-of-vaporisation … more air gets into the combustion chambers, which is then compressed more than other versions of the “Barra” six, due to its 12:1 compression-ratio pistons. The EcoLPI does not have direct-injection as mentioned in the video, but port-injection. The EcoLPI is two levels of LPG gas technology above the earlier EGas (green top) “Barra” six. 🚙
I think the point being made was that LPG is directly injected into the engine, vs the old converter/mixer system, rather than LPG being injected into the cylinder which is the usual meaning of direct injection.
Yes, @@petesmitt. However, as at least one other commenter said, the fuel isn’t direct injected (which means into the combustion chambers), it’s port injected (into the intake ports of the cylinder head), like how all other “Barra” sixes came from the factory, except the “green top” EGas variant. It had an LPG carburettor (which is an LPG mixer & throttle-body combination). The electronic-fuel-injectors on the EcoLPI engine aren’t the same as for the petrol fuelled variants though. They are special liquid-phase-injection (LPI) of LPG types. LPI has advantages over gaseous-phase-injection that other manufacturers used. Ford may have been the only manufacturer to sell production cars with LPI of LPG. It’s an excellent system which is cleaner, arguably safer, cheaper to run, and produces higher performance than the naturally-aspirated petrol fuelled variants. 🚙
@@lyndongordon2518 You missed my point, which is that the reviewer wasn't distinguishing between combustion chamber and intake port injection, when he used the direct injection term; he was just differentiating from the old mixer system. The reason that gaseous-phase-injection is used more than LPI is that it doesn't require an expensive high pressure pump in the tank.
I think LPG stations reducing in numbers mostly killed the possibility of LPG becoming a mainstream fuel for cars. Makes you wonder why the greenies wouldn't embrace this technology. Oh wait I know, cos we can fuel our cars on cancel culture, pronouns, and dirty electric tech sourced from dirty resources hmmm... love your stuff Ross, keep them coming. Ford was such a great brand once upon a time, not do these days
This video is going to get a lot of views now with the price of petrol in Australia. It seems like a massive oversight for the industry to avoid LPG models. Toyota could even have a resurgance given they didn't get on board with EVs early.
When the FGX came out, and ford was letting people test it at Avalon, they claimed the FGX XR6 ecolpi was quicker on launch than a turbo, there’s a video on RUclips too.
yes but where would you put the tank? In the sedan you lose boot space. You would lose the last row of seats feature (which really only for midgets anyway) and the tanks are big.
@@rods6405 , in the EcoLPI “Barra” powered Falcons, the joint dual LPG tanks are outside the cabin, under a flat boot floor. There’s only a little less boot space compared with the petrol fuelled Falcons. However, normally these cars weren’t equipped with a spare wheel & tyre. There was a compact tyre inflating & sealing pump neatly fitted under a cover in the boot. I believe a boot space consuming “space-saver” spare wheel & tyre, or full-sized tyre & standard alloy wheel option were available too. The LPG tank system couldn’t be made to fit under the Territory unfortunately. 🚙
I've had lpg cars mainly falcons for over 20yrs now, I can remember paying 19c a litre and even though it's now $119 litre, I'll still stick to my Bf 2007, my Au 2000 ute and my Prado Grande 1997 and they've never let me down. Touch Wood. Gotta love my Fords🇦🇺🌈
I had LPG on my holden 308 back in the 90s early 2000s, back then it was 20 cents a liltre , was the best mod i ever made. LPG also has a higher octaine raiing then other forms of petrol, also if the engine is straight tuned just on LPG, it creates more power.
Ford should have added blind spot sensors (for lane changing) on the FGX. They gave you extras like maps and digital radio but no sensors. They are just so useful as you can never be sure if a vehicle is in a blind spot.
I owned a BA egas sedan 12 years ago and before that an AU wagon gas only plus a few dual fuel falcons and fairlanes before that . All were cheap to run . Ba would easily do 800 km before the warning beeper sounded and would cost around $50 to fill . Sadly life threw one of it's hurdles at me and I was forced to sell my BA sedan ..
I remember about 15 years ago in perth i had a lpg van and fuel was like 30-50 cents, now its 1.20. And some time ago there was a shortage of lpg and no one had it, something to do with supply chain being disrupted. Then for the last 9 years i have been using a xr8 as a daily and when premium was around $1.30 it was fine but now with the prices up so much more i had to sell it off as my driving had gotten more and it was no longer acceptable to throw so much money away on fuel.
great review Ross. totally agree - it really is a shame that the Falcons are no longer being made. In terms of Fuel efficiency - I recently traded in my VE SS and went back to a FG XR6 2011 manual and I'm getting less than 10L/100km. I mean, such a good car - reliable, its got the power and enough usable torque in the lower rev range for daily driving..and as you say they had the LPG and 2.0L versions as well..such a shame they weren't given the chance to be all that they could be.
South Korea started offering LPG to the public in 2019 to reduce emissions. Kia produce a number of LPG cars I wonder why they aren't offering them in Australia.
LPG + 4000cc + ZF = ENVIRO FRIENDLY!!! We have HEAPS of propane reserves in BASS STRAIGHT!!! Add some butane, nitrogen & you have LPG!!! The BARRA still had a business model because it's one of the few engines on this earth that can tolerate LPG!!!
Great review Im doin 700ks to a tank in my work bf wagon lpg.. not a bad car super comfortable has adequate power.. it’s just when they get on a bit the gas and computer don’t like each other.. there is 7 lpg wagons in our fleet.. only problem is most service stations are not renewing there tanks.. lpg we be history very soon.. sadly.. but you a spot on Ross. More development and we could’ve had a clean fuel
Great review. Great explanation of the stupidity of the green movement and our government 4:58 PMSL bloody diesels and the crap they spew into the air plus the maintenance! The only issue(for me) with ecolpi sedan was the tank in the boot and spare tyre compromise no probs in the ute.
Mate of mine had one of these was just as good as the petrol, great cars, the short period where Holden and ford were pushing gas cars was a massive missed opportunity
In Fact when they released the LPI they asked motoring journalists to race a petrol xr6. In both rolling and standing still drags they couldn’t beat the LPI car no matter who drove what car. So it’s noticeably quicker and as someone else here has said retuned to not embarrass Turbo car sales.
Maybe Ford should have spent their money advertising this direct injection LPG model instead of R&D into the 2L Ecoboost model which was a sales flop. I totally forgot about this model until this review and I'd say alot of people never knew it even existed sadly. Be interesting to see total build numbers 🤔
@@RossReviewsau I have a fairly rare VF SV6 sportwagon on factory gas in Sydney as my daily. Welcome to take it for a spin any time Ross. Holden went for vapour injection rather than LPI set up so sadly it drops a bit of power over the petrol 3.6L. Consumption ranges from
Depending where you fill up and what time of the year, summer or winter the ratio of Propane=power and butane = economy is different so performance alters..
It is quite a shame that LPG is not as widespread in Canada, rest alone doing a conversion for bi-fuel (gasoline and LPG) with qualified technicians, unless it is for fleet customers. On similar topic, you may also have heard of a Toyota Crown Comfort taxi in Hong Kong livery in Toronto, and yup it is a LPG.
Its not direct injection, its multipoint fuel injection in the fuel rail - so port fuel injection. I agree the emissions would have kept it compliant easier than the petrol version. More things about LPG, I worked for a company that retailed LPG as one of its business units and they had this frustrating attitude that it was a fuel for dirty old taxis, bbqs and furnaces. Kept on calling it a dead end business. BP is looking at retooling the Kwinana oil refinery to produce jet fuel from biodiesel and green hydrogen using a process developed by Honeywell. One of the byproducts of this is propane which is called ‘renewable propane’. SO its possible to have net zero (assuming proper fuel mixture tuning to suppress N2O formation from combustion in air) motoring with LPG or at the very least very low emissions. I don’t agree with the mining argument against EVs though. Many studies show that the overall impact cut off between a conventional car vs an EV is around 80 000km, maybe less or maybe more based upon the source of electricity. WITH all of that said, I do love me some EcoLPI. It’s my favourite engine :)
@@RossReviewsau some more information about the EcoLPI Not only did it produce more torque and power than the standard I6, it produced it at lower RPM! The LPI system was also developed by Orbital engines in Perth. When the local car industry wound up, that business unit was sold off to Sprintgas and orbital pivoted to designing small military engines (like what goes into a surveillance drone). There is a rumour that the EcoLPI was too powerful and had to be detuned, hence the lower RPM for peak power/torque.
Where in Melbourne was this filmed Jon? Love to have that car in a Ute form. $170 to fill up with diesel here in Melbourne once a week kills the pocket. I also find it odd that car manufacturers do not produce more LPG cars.
Great review. I have an immaculate 2014 with only 93k sitting in the garage , just waiting for the right buyer. Just a smooth powerful car and cheaper to run than my Focus daily driver 😊
I drive an lpg FG Mk1 xr6 ute every day, drives great and is very cheap to run. Like you said, it doesn't have the power of the petrol barra but is still a great daily.
I own an FG Mk II Falcon G6E EcoLPI. Ford rated its “Barra” six as slightly more powerful, and significantly more torquey than the naturally-aspirated petrol “Barra” six. My engine is stock, with a standard exhaust system. Allowing for an estimated 22% loss of power through its (ZF 6HP26, etc.) drivetrain, its dyno’ reading implies 220kW at the flywheel. That’s without any tuning. For comparison, Ford rated the original turbocharged “Barra” sixes at 240kW. LPG always was a higher octane-equivalent rated, and higher performance fuel than petrol. 🚙
@@lyndongordon2518 yes but you may find the 240kw figure quoted by Ford for the turbo (of the earlier non FG vintage) is also underated for marketing reasons to avoid 'upstaging' the flagship XR8 model of the same vintage. My non modified xr6 turbo zf auto made just under 220kw which equates to over 260kw at the crank when taking into account similar driveline losses as you've suggested. I am however supremely impressed with Ford's LPI set up on the FG MK2 range not only in power/torque figures but also driveability and $ economy. We have been advocates of LPG since the early 90's. Just for the sake of fair and direct comparison the FG turbo variant of the same vintage as the ecolpi actually makes 270kw at the crank, not 240kw.
I was watching an old video on your channel and it’s the blue fgx with red seats. You said you don’t get the best sound from the barras if you want a good deep sound this is what I have done with the cars I knew I was keeping over 5 years. Get a good set of extractors and find someone that can wrap them properly and neatly with heat bandages. Then find a stainless custom exhaust shop to do a 3,5” up to 500rwhp and 4.0” 500rwhp up to 1000whp and get the 3mm thick stainless I think it is its thicker than the pre made exhausts you can buy and fit yourself. You’ll also have to get hi-flow cat and muffler and have the exhaust mandrel bent and you won’t believe how much throatier it sounds but I wouldn’t do this unless you are going to keep the car. I had a friend that owns a exhaust shop fit this design to my LX torana V8 and everyone kept asking where I got my exhaust done and he got lots of older cars getting their exhaust done by him and then I sold that car. I bought a VS Holden V8 Ute and it had a bit of mods done to engine and decent sound from the exhaust but I got my mate to fit same design exhaust as I’m saying for nice quality sounding exhaust but I told him he had to get a sticker and big enough for people to see on the back window. After everything was done and sticker was put on the window the first time out cruising on the Gold Coast he had 30 cars pull in and asked for the same exhaust I had on my car. He said he couldn’t do the exact same because I had been given some custom made mufflers from race car driver that got them from one of the V8 Supercars. He said it was the funniest when guys in ford V8 would go into his shop and ask if he could get their car to sound the same. He would say firstly you’ll have to sell your ford and buy a Holden V8 and they would say not a chance and he would laugh and say ok I can get yours to sound like this and he would start his falcon and they would say yes that sounds awesome. He would tell them holdens and fords don’t sound the same ever. Back then in the 90’s 2000 it would cost between $2,5k to $3,5k to have everything done depending on what tips and type of vehicle. I don’t know what it would cost now because I haven’t been to an exhaust shop to get a quote but I think it’s going to be around the $5k for V8 extractors bandage and thicker stainless tubing cats and mufflers and some nice design tips
Is that why the taxis were getting a million k's on the original bottom end with a couple of transmissions a diff & maybe a head gasket or 2 depending on whether they blew a hose etc 👍😛
LPG is much cleaner for the environment and engines than petrol. So, LPG is easier on engines. Also, due to the latent-heat-of-vaporisation that the EcoLPI “Barra” six takes advantage of, liquid-phase-injection of LPG cools the combustion chambers. Ever since unleaded petrol was introduced, modern engines have been made to tolerate the lack of valve lubricating lead. LPG is a lead-free fuel. 🚙
My FGX Eco/Lpi ute (which isn't for sale) has the LSD from factory. Maybe it changed with the FGX model. Terrific vehicle, heaps of power and cheap as small hatch to run.

good point with wondering why gas isn't a modern thing your right though it actually produces less emissions and cheaper so people would be saving money and actually "saving the environment" but they'd rather electric cars which cost a fortune to buy and if something goes wrong up for even more cash all a scam..

Yes I don't know why they couldn't have stuck to this formula & really hammered it out there to the masses which the dummies didn't hardly anyone even knew about them man, cheaper to run than the petrol models well right now they are,Lpg emits much lower emissions than diesel & petrol,a full tank will get you to just about wherever you need to go,unlike an EV 5 stops just to get from Sydney to Melbourne & that's if you can find a charging station lol absolute rubbish & no I haven't done that trip but it's pretty spot on I'd say,I hate EV's with a passion as you can tell Johnny haha & I'd rather one of these any day over that junk,ok may the mighty Barra live on forever & I loved this review cheers Bro.

So sad.... Australia produced alot of great cars...Ford and Holden should still be manufacturing....imagine what a 2022 l Ford and Holden would be like......so much money was wasted by our government....that money could have gone towards keeping the car industry alive.....
A lot of comments "It’s getting harder to find LPG." Can you change the tanks in the car for those in forklift trucks ? The you could get them delivered to your home or work? and change them your self. Just my thought!

Not sure about the sedans but my xr6 eco lpi ute is factory optioned with an LSD and its the stronger m86 unit as fitted to the xr6 turbo and xr8's. Peak power is made 1000rpm lower in the eco lpi. I recall watching a video from ford when they released the fgx range claiming the eco lpi will out run the xr6 turbo in a 100m sprint before being left behind ruclips.net/video/yPewODeliBM/видео.html. I can definitely attest that mine feels punchier then the petrol down low but runs out of puff in the last 1000rpm or so. I am not a fan of the old egas falcons but i cannot fault the eco lpi at all
The biggest main difference between them however was peak power did differ noticeably EcoLpi had peak power at 5000rpm Petrol grey top had peak power at 6000rpm in comparison. Both had peak torque at 3250rpm funny enough 95RON produced the same power as LPG (198kw/409nm), 98RON in a petrol had no official claim on even more performance, really if you own a n/a anything more than 95RON you're wasting your money. The EcoLpi was a brilliant engine regardless. I have no doubt that it burns a lot cleaner than petrol ! Only reason i didn't buy an EcoLpi G6E (FG2) or even XR6 (FG2) was because unlike the turbo 6 & petrol 6 which have the same higher performance oriented suspension, the EcoLpi had the XT base suspension basically. Softer & more boat like

Hi Ross. Great review/overview of the FG MK2 XR6 EcoLPI. I have a 2013 version here in Perth and has been a pretty good car.
A few issues I have found here in Perth for such cars are (may not apply to eastern states):
* Yes stations for LPG are less and less every day, especially in the country areas.

That would be this car 👍Its the only FG2 built in Victory Gold besides the final GTF.

I love the LPG and LPI, currently putting parts on my 06 XT wagon for a rwc

I think LPG stations reducing in numbers mostly killed the possibility of LPG becoming a mainstream fuel for cars. Makes you wonder why the greenies wouldn't embrace this technology. In a perfect world this engine should of been engineered for the SZ Territory rather than the Landrover Diesel that we got.
Facts!!!
yes but where would you put the tank?

Ford should have added blind spot sensors (for lane changing) on the FGX. They gave you extras like maps and digital radio but no sensors. They are just so useful as you can never be sure if a vehicle is in a blind spot.

I remember about 15 years ago in perth i had a lpg van and fuel was like 30-50 cents, now its 1.20.
Thanks for all that info mate! Interesting stuff.. I reckon lpg should make a come back
@@RossReviewsau some more information about the EcoLPI
Not only did it produce more torque and power than the standard I6, it produced it at lower RPM!

Good choice!
A lot of garages over here have gone out of LPG as all of the taxis have all gone over to electric.

Damn appreciate the tip brother
300k miles I thought LPG destroys car engines. Due to high temperature inside the engine. Awesome video dude
Is that why the taxis were getting a million k's on the original bottom end with a couple of transmissions a diff & maybe a head gasket or 2 depending on whether they blew a hose etc 👍😛
Nah mate the taxi industry lived on these cars! They drove them like people are saying over 1 million kms
i have a FG ute. 350k on the clock it is the best car i've ever had. It's bulletproof.
They just keep going!
My FGX Eco/Lpi ute (which isn't for sale) has the LSD from factory. Maybe it changed with the FGX model. Terrific vehicle, heaps of power and cheap as small hatch to run.
XR Utes are LSD, Sedans are single.
Can you do an Egas version aswell? Before they went direct injection and it was gas vapour…
Hi Ross, love your videos mate, take care, hope you have a great Christmas 🎄
Happy holidays! thanks you too
Absolutely love my Ecolpi I've put 100k on it since owning it in the last 6 years nothing has ever gone wrong with it. Costs cheaper than your mums Corolla fill up :)
Couldn't agree more!
good point with wondering why gas isn't a modern thing
your right though it actually produces less emissions and cheaper so people would be saving money and actually "saving the environment" but they'd rather electric cars which cost a fortune to buy and if something goes wrong up for even more cash all a scam..
we live in clown world now :(
Fuel is easy to work out guys. If we just use ford combined figures- Fuel prices per litre November 2023 W.A
Turbo ute 12.5 L/100km @ $1.70 = $21.25
Non Turbo 10.7 L/100km @ $1.70 = $17.85
Gas epi ute 13.5 L/100km @ $1.30 = $17.55
Ford ranger diesel 9L /100km @ $1.86= $16.74
Cheers ross just gota lpg bfwagon. Not fast but nice cruiser kip n the back.
Hello Mr Ross love your videos buddy. I think lpg for tandoori oven not car
Still driving my gas bf since 2016, incredibly reliable car, and clean, I get 650ks out of my bf
They go well
I want this engine in my ef falcon with the lpg
Yes I don't know why they couldn't have stuck to this formula & really hammered it out there to the masses which the dummies didn't hardly anyone even knew about them man, cheaper to run than the petrol models well right now they are,Lpg emits much lower emissions than diesel & petrol,a full tank will get you to just about wherever you need to go,unlike an EV 5 stops just to get from Sydney to Melbourne & that's if you can find a charging station lol absolute rubbish & no I haven't done that trip but it's pretty spot on I'd say,I hate EV's with a passion as you can tell Johnny haha & I'd rather one of these any day over that junk,ok may the mighty Barra live on forever & I loved this review cheers Bro.
shouldnt be suprising that it makes more power considering lpg has a higher ron around 110-120 ron making it pretty good for boost aswell
The lpg motor has higher compression ratio than the petrol motor it's over 12-1
The LPi system was supplied by Orbital from Western Australia, just so's ya know.
didnt know that
the ecoboost and ecolpi were the best part of the late falcon
Hope the lpg works. My bf 2010 bro its few probs. But do like it haft to now. Thanks
is tuning capable on these LPG barras? dumb question i know
Some people have told me they are de tuned from factory and make decent gains I’m not sure thi
Why does this not have a green top motor in it. Or has the owner changed it. Awesome video man love the falcon content.
Green top engines were only on the E-Gas engines, The ones that run Gas Converter. AU2-FG1.
@@TheFordMan888 thanks for the education as I did not know and I want to know and learn more about these nice wonderful falcons..
I own an 2012 Mk2 Fg Ecolpi XT and I absolutely love it, just wondering if my xt would have different gear ratios to an xr6 so would my car go quicker 0-100?,
I’m not sure about the diff ratios 🤨
I e got a BA Ute wth 500000 k’s on gas, motor/trans/diff never been touched!
This car is bloody good!
It took my mate 2 years to sell his dedicated LPG FGX XR6, as no one would buy
@@user-ru2vu7cp9g the current owner of this car is asking nearly 20k..
I paid 4K for my 08 LPG Falcon when prices started to shoot up. I get 600km for $65-75 depending on LPG prices which is way better than most petrol cars
So sad.... Australia produced alot of great cars...Ford and Holden should still be manufacturing....imagine what a 2022 l Ford and Holden would be like......so much money was wasted by our government....that money could have gone towards keeping the car industry alive.....
Yep Id rather have a car industry than the ABC
A lot of comments "It’s getting harder to find LPG." Can you change the tanks in the car for those in forklift trucks ? The you could get them delivered to your home or work? and change them your self. Just my thought!
I’d be curious as to which American cars these NA Falcons most remind you of:
Taurus SHO?
Crown Vic?
2000’s-era Charger?
(I’m an Australian, but I’m sure Americans would love to get some kind of reference too!)
Probably a crown Vic tbh
That lpg motor had higher compression pistons running a bit over 12.1 comp
Interesting
I thought it had lower ?
@@skezburah they definitely had 12.0 compression ratio, you can run high comp and with turbo engines you can run alot more boost than petrol
@@RossReviewsau the last lpg barra had a factory rated 198 kw and over 400 NM I think it had around 408mm
@@markcalleja8463 turbo motors have lower compression I thought the green top had lower then the na motors ??...u don't want to run much boost in a high compression motor
My dad had the same xr6 but with out the lpg
Good stuff
@@RossReviewsau it is for the performance
I am not a fan of the old egas falcons but i cannot fault the eco lpi at all
why are manufacturers messing with other things left right and centre when CLEARLY the future is LPG?
The biggest main difference between them however was peak power did differ noticeably
EcoLpi had peak power at 5000rpm
Petrol grey top had peak power at 6000rpm in comparison. Both had peak torque at 3250rpm funny enough
95RON produced the same power as LPG (198kw/409nm), 98RON in a petrol had no official claim on even more performance, really if you own a n/a anything more than 95RON you're wasting your money.
Softer & more boat like
appreciate the impute mate! is wild to see in this high petrol price world, what we had before and (australia) having loads of Natural Gas Resources to produce their own.. just seems so backwards we don't go back to it.. cheap to run and these barras last the test of time
@@RossReviewsau Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or Propane i think you lot call back in Canada is different to Natural Gas, but 100% they last with proper maintenance & correct oils !
My 2014 FG Mk II Falcon G6E EcoLPI came from
the factory with ZF/Sachs gas shock-absorbers. I believe it’s a firmer & more sporty compromise than that of the Falcon XT (base model). 🚙
Is LPG even worth getting a turbo?
I have a straight LPG fg and not sure weather it’s worth getting a turbo put on or not because it’s straight LPG
I've been told my 2012 LPG xr6 falcon is a hybrid (LPG and petrol) but it only has the LPG intake any reason ??
Ford did not make dual fuel falcons, it was LPG or Petrol. What colour is your rocker cover? usually the green tops are LPG and black is petrol
@Bloody Gronk it's got a black cover but yea the old lady I brought it off must be crazy or something cause it's only got the LPG tank from what I can see
Too hard to get LPG in WA. Hardly any stations have it anymore otherwise I’d buy one
It’s a shame tho really!
Nice colour
Very 👌
the only thing going for those late model barra lpg cars is the fact its the same motor as the xr6t and turbo models just without the manifolds etc other then that lpg cars a waste of time, space and clog up the second hand car market.
pretty sure thats wrong , the injected ones didnt detonate like the green top gas system did so no need for the rod upgrade . could be wrong but i thinks that is the story.
@@motozz8258 Correct, EcoLPi run spaghetti rods as they call them. Its the E-Gas motor you want, change the headgasket to get the compression down and convert to E85 good for 400kw on a stock bottom end.
@@TheFordMan888 that’s good info
i do 400klms a week on gas in a magna wagon , iis not 80 c a litre here in the bush
It’s so odd that Melbourne seems to get the cheapest gas.. Perth is around 1 dollor or just over
Get the wagon 100ltr tank gets me 900kms
Crazy we don’t still use
Strongest engines the Lpg Falcons that's why they where Taxis million km engines.
100% the taxi industry doesn’t lie
I get more ks than this car on my ford falcon bf mk3 wagon I get over 800 kilometres in a full tank and my gas tank is way bigger and its a wagon and its tucked in underneath and it gets the job done and its a great ute
Good on ya
Ute or wagon?
@@MartinJones123 it's a wagon but I called it a ute even my cfmeu tradie friends at work call my wagon a ute because it gets the job done and it's very tough even on off roads too

Don't forget mines on gas too just straight LPG gas
you cant blame the greens on the fact that there's no more falcons being built in Aus, that's Tony Abbott's doing
Australians didn't buy them.
@@mvnorsel6354 yes and no government subsidies to keep the factories open
Yes. But to be fair Mitsubishi packed up while under Labor too.
In the end it was more than just politics on one side or the other, there were at least 10 reasons why it came to a halt.
@@mvnorsel6354 exactly. It doesn't matter how many used cars you buy, it won't keep a factory running.
The other issue was the reluctance of the non Australian company owners not wanting to expand the market and their willingness to shut it down.
@@galactica1980 if they had the foresight they couldve continued to build some falcons while focussing on building the ford ranger which is now australia's best selling car but unfortunately that wasn't the case
LPG vehicles are the most environmentally friendly you can get. Electric vehicles are NOT.
I would 100% agree with you! To many sheep think EVs just appear out of thin air!
green top barras are better than petrol ones, they have a higher compression ratio
No way, there less powerful, and have crappy millage and use a mixer type system from the 60's
