I used to always take the corner after a long straight in 2nd gear (race track designers always put the slowest corner after the longest straight!). Then 2nd gear synchro started to crunch, so to save it I started taking those corners in 3rd. Turns out I was faster doing it that way.
Makes sense. Or you could just race in a diesel, where one upshifts to go faster as an intrinsic characteristic of that high torque engine. Combine your tip with a diesel engine and you'll be unbeatable.
I did Putnam Park in just fourth gear once. It really did force me to maximize momentum. Good tip.
