Really interesting discussion. Some great points. Thanks for this. I really enjoyed how you discussed the nature of the squad as articulations of the common character types.

Ca va, bienvenue dans le monde Malazan. Sounds like you really liked the beginning of this amazing series, which is usually a clue that you will like the entire story. If you read on it will be fun to hear more spoiler reviews, your take was a unique view from many interesting angles. Enjoy reading friend, peace from the USA.
Sidenote... What kind of reptiles do you have?

Thank you for your kind words!
Of course I will read, I am actually deep deep into book two as we speak. There is So much that I can't wait to talk about on the channel.
Good eye for the reptiles by the way. I have two Herman's tortoises named 'patrick' and 'swayze', don't ask! Haha. What do you have?

Now it’s a good mentioning that the hounds kill a full cast of soldiers (hundreds) plus the entire village in a very short period of time and with no sign of injury. As you said: power level. Now later on, in a second 2 of them are dead from Anomander because he gets pissed and he makes a point. Power level for gods to see that in Malazan not necessarily the gods are the most powerful beings. You are also correct, it’s intentional that his pov is never given and people only talk about him as a mystery. That gives the impression of his extremely long life how fits to a human’s civilization.
You are not totally wrong at this point. The characters are not so original YET. We say that this book is the weakest in the series… witness the progress.
Yet the other cast already is more interesting in the city. Yes, they have a thief and an assassin too but way more nuanced characters in that part of the story and it’s not a mistake they are in.
Kruppe… I found him funny back then. I knew he will be important somehow.

Loved your review. You caught on the structure of the book really well. This is the weakest book in the series, despite being pretty entertaining and fun. Hope you enjoy the next books even more.
