  • Living In Indianapolis Indiana | The Controversy You Need To Know! In this video we are discussing one of the hot topics regarding living in Indianapolis... or all of Indiana for that matter. And, it sounds silly but I promise, it will affect you in some way. When living in Indianapolis Indiana you'll notice many things that might be different compared to where you lived before. The Eastern or Central time zone could be one of those. Indianapolis Indiana... actually the entire state of Indiana sits in a geographically unique place. The border between the Eastern and Central time zones falls right through the state. It used to be the eastern border of Indiana where the state meets Ohio. But, that changed quite a bit when Indiana began to observe daylight savings time in 2006. But, the controversy was... which time zone do we observe? It wasn't and still isn't an easy decision. Living in Indianapolis Indiana is and always will be in a unique situation. Take a look at the video to see if you have an opinion on it!

    I love the late sunsets in the summer here. It’s great to be able to go do outdoor activities for hours after work

    Back when I was a child in the 1950's we were on Eastern Standard Time and parents around here complained that they were having to put their kids to bed when the sun was still out and I remember that too with the birds singing outside our windows. So we switched over to Central Standard time like Chicago and we were on that until we switched back to Eastern Standard Time for business reasons because of the east coast we would be the same as them. Personally I like the Central Standard Time better.

    Yes!! We moved here from central IL in the summer of 2018. This was the first thing we noticed. It really messes with your head when there's daylight still at 10pm. We definitely had to get full black out curtains for the kids. Geographically, this should be central time.

      @LivingInIndianapolis  3 года назад +1

      I agree. Central would seem more correct. Of course, we would be on the far eastern edge of Central and get the extremes from that. Tough to win! Although, we have young kids too and when bedtime is 8pm and there's still 2 hours of daylight left.... it's hard! Blackout shades are a must.

      We here in Indianapolis Indiana should be on central standard time and we were when I was a child - this eastern standard time is for the birds. We should be on the same time zone as Chicago NOT New York City.

    One of my favorite Indiana "time stories" takes place in a town somewhere on the IN/OH line that had a basketball court divided by the state line. During the summer you could throw a ball from Ohio and it would arrive across the court an hour earlier in Indiana.

    Growing up I always remember on TV: "This show tonight at 8pm / 7 central.". Was a very confusing for a kid bc you had to keep both numbers in your head.

      I can remember those days as well. Especially before we had any ability to record something... even before the VCR!

    5:05 you have Starke and Pulaski counties in NW Indiana as being on Central Time. They were for a while but those two went back to Eastern. I grew up in Kokomo and relocated to NW Indiana in 1990 and HATED the time change and how dark 5pm in December is. Massachusetts has been pushing to ditch the time change so someday the nation might go back to being like Arizona and Hawaii (and Indiana pre 2006) who still don't observe.

    • @LivingInIndianapolis
      @LivingInIndianapolis  3 года назад +1

      Right. There have been some changes in the NW. In the SW too. The maps are a little "general". It's crazy how the time zone anyplace is on can be a tough topic. Seems like a small thing but it can have big implications on a person's day to day.

    This was a very informative video. And I love that West Wing episode you referenced: 20 Hours in America.
    Also, by chance have you ever watched the RUclips video by World According to Briggs on the Top 10 Reasons not to move to Indianapolis?

    I think Metro Detroit is in the wrong time zone. I cant fathom Indiana time lol. I hate the winter sunrise past 8 am. But not gonna lie, I love the summer nights of 9:30 sunsets.

      Plenty of people do like the fact that it gets dark later in the day during summer. Lots of daylight after work.

    It's not to different then what we deal with up in the Pacific northwest but we still have daylight savings. Thinking about making the move so won't be a big change if your from up here.

    • @LivingInIndianapolis

      Right... we aren't the only location to experience this. Many people though who are considering Indy or the area as a place to live will often assume we are on Central Time. Many are surprised when they realize we aren't.

    Interesting......but how much would you like it if the sun rose at 4AM in May and June?
    Northeast Ohio, not all that far from Indy, has sunrise at 5AM and sunset after 9PM in those months. Beats being in the dark.

    • @LivingInIndianapolis
      @LivingInIndianapolis  3 года назад

      It's true. But, this is why it's a small controversy! So many like different arrangements. I like it when it gets dark earlier. Other people like it when the sun sets much later!
