  • Track 2 off of Winning Losers: A Collection of Home Recordings 89-93. This song was played over the end credits to the 2001 film, Session 9.
    Words and music © Lou Barlow
    Lyrics:
    Untrained you never shut up
    Needs keep you empty
    Freedom spins you out of control
    'Til someone chokes you with a chain
    (chokes you with a) chain
    (chokes you with a) chain
    Learn to be paranoid
    Fear pulls my strings, too
    Oh what a lack of trust can do
    For broken-hearted youth
    (broken-hearted) youth
    (broken-hearted) youth
    (broken-hearted) youth
    (broken-hearted)
    I'm sorry I hurt you
    Please don't leave me on my knees
    We had a simple understanding, didn't we? Didn't we?
    All consumed and convinced as ever
    But where were you?
    Tease my guilt but please me still
    All the others just disgust me
    Too simple to trust me
    Too dull to engage, too shallow to please me
    It would be so easy to please me

      "I'm sorry I hurt you, please don't leave me." Perfectly captures the ending where Gordon is weeping into his broken phone begging his wife he murdered for her forgiveness as he touches the picture of his dead baby with his bloody fingers.

    I forgot how much I love this song. Maybe it’s my obsession with session 9, but I love this song! I don’t usually listen to softer music but the lyrics are stunning and I almost feel like it’s about DID/MPD, like discussed in the movie. Like some dark other personality.

      Hey my friend, I am also obsessed with Session 9. This song is "soft" but with the lyrics, as you pointed out, and context of the movie, it is as the movie is: sad and tragic.
      For me the song really hits when the music changes preceeding the lyrics "I'm sorry I hurt you, please don't leave me..." That is the crux of Session 9.
      Gordon has not properly handled his stress, family life, mental illness, and business, and the movie starts at the end stage of poor decisions.
      He hurt his family, cannot accept it, and begs for forgiveness from the dead. Sad and tragic.

    I remember several months after I first saw Session 9, I was at a bonfire party in a friend's backyard, and nearly everybody there claimed to have seen ghosts. So I spent most of that night sitting by the fire, and listening to these people (most of whom were strangers) talk about their paranormal experiences, and it reminded me of Session 9, and this song kept going through my head the whole time.

      Simon Magus...

    • @reguluspastor
      @reguluspastor 4 года назад

      I personally gravitate toward the possessing-demon theory, given that Gordon's "Simon" and the one on the tape have the same voice and M.O.
      Plus, the perfect lining up of circumstances makes the lore seem like one of the more demonologically informed horror stories out there. (One big possible example in particular sticks out to me. Some other fans have pointed out that in that main Hobbes family photo, child Mary's facial features greatly resemble Gordon's.)
      But ofc, disease has long been attributed to demonic influence; so I don't find the two main theories abt Simon's origin to be mutually exclusive.

      @@reguluspastor I have no idea who Simon is?!

    • @Corpseplower
      @Corpseplower  3 года назад +1

      @@aaronjboysreleasing2001 He/it is the name given to Mary's violent personality in the film.
      If you follow one theory, then it's the name of a supernatural entity that possesses people in a weakened and vulnerable mental state. It essentially does what they could never bring themselves to do - killing, etc.
      This theory was originally in the film itself but was excised in editing to leave things open to interpretation.
      Another theory, one I tend to go with personally, is that Simon is used merely to put a voice to something that can happen to people in similar states. I think that for the sake of narrative simplicity, they just used the Simon voice with Gordon to avoid adding another voice to potentially confuse audiences.

      Its in DADGAE, stumbled across that by accident. Ive worked out up until 1.50. The single note/double note lines are easy towards the beginning, when the lyrics kick in its [10]x[10]900, 9x9700, 7x7500. Or its in DADGAD but you dont play the high D for the above chords. Either way sounds good.

    I've watched Session 9 dozens of of times since I discovered it in 2008. How I loved, and still love, the outstanding plot, acting, shooting location, and that feeling of dread I enjoyed. But now, it just makes me sad thinking about Gordon's kind, loving persona and the vast devastation of a single impulsive act. And the dread that I feel when I watch it is almost unbearable. Never have I ever found another movie like this.

    • @xeokym223
      @xeokym223 4 года назад +2

      I just rewatched it. I watched it with my husband back when it came out & I don't remember being all that impressed with it. Which is really weird, because this time I watched it, it was like a totally different movie. I remembered the plot but I couldn't remember how it ended. This time it seemed a lot more haunting & surreal. I could _swear_ there were things in it this time that were not in the movie the first time I watched it, I'm wondering if they cut things out and this one I just downloaded had stuff added back in or something. Although it could entirely be a case of me not remembering shit from 19 years ago. LOL
      It's kinda sad they destroyed most of the hospital some years later...should have been restored.

      @@xeokym223 it truly is amazing how much you notice watching it again. I was just thinking about Hank's talk with Jeff about how asbestos gets in your lungs, incubates, then BOOM death... exactly like stress, which gets the best of Gordon, the "Zen master of calm".
      I visited Danvers a few years ago after the reconstruction. It is a shame, but the shell of the main building is being used and remember the outdoor steps Gordon walks down? They are still there!

    I saw Lou several times at the Lounge Axe in Chicago, and bought this at one of his shows. I don't know about anyone out there, but to me this is so beautifully homoerotic. His cover of "Run to me" by Bryan Adams is stunning, a re-imagination of the lyric for men.
