The short film for Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” is the sixth of nine short films for the “Bad” album and is the centerpiece of the feature film Moonwalker. The short film features the debut of Michael’s iconic “anti-gravity lean.” Inspired in part by Fred Astaire’s “Girl Hunt Ballet” dance number in the film The Band Wagon, “Smooth Criminal” was named Best Video at the BRIT Awards, Broadcast Film Critics Association and the People’s Choice Awards. In 2014, Rolling Stone ranked “Smooth Criminal” No. 5 on a list of Michael Jackson’s 20 greatest short films.

I think the thing that this sped up version really shows me is how MJ was a master of the visual medium. This was a man who expressed his love for Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, the kind of era this video is set in, but sped up the whole sequence takes on something of the visual flair of a Chaplin. Even in high speed Michael's moves are distinguishable and look just as impressive hyper-accentuated as they do in the regular speed version. I love the original cut from Moonwalker don't get me wrong, but I keep coming back to this version. There's something about it that just enchants me.
Throughout the video MJ hinself is a blur of motion -- so much so that we seldom see his face except where absolutely necessary -- and I can't help feeling this is a deliberate artistic choice by MJ. In the original, MJ is already a kind of creator of chaos from the moment he enters the club, but in this version he's a literally whirlwind, spinning from set piece to set piece like a force of nature. I can't get enough of it, I've rewatched it six times now.
