I would think this would bring me up about 10K per hour. Only because of the aerodynamics and better body position. This is my untested theory.

Accepting that cycling is never really going to be a cheap sport, there's no need to buy a brand new TT bike. Pretty much any genuine TT bike will be faster than even an expensive road bike. I bought an old second had alloy TT bike for £350. Even before I did any upgrade work it would have saved me about 30 mins on an ironman.

Thanks for making this video mate, shame to see all the moaners in the comments. I’ve been riding the 2023 version of this bike (only difference is the stem), and have noticed a couple extra’s which haven’t been mentioned (took me a while to figure out too!).
    1. Top tube snake: you can slide your chain breaker, spare links, even the tool kit that comes with the bike into the top tube snake, wedging it in with the other equipment. And a spare tube, rolled up on top of it. I dare say you could squeeze two spare tubes into it, but I’ve not tried.
I’ve got no saddle bags or any other storage at all, everything fits inside the frame. You can’t do this on the more expensive models.
    2. Bento box: I can fit ten gels in it. The bottom bracket box is used as a “bin“ for used gels. You can’t do this on the more expensive models.
    3. Adjustability: massively underrated advantage on this bike. You can have a beginners position or completely stretch out to a pro level position. It’s easy to get very comfortable for Ironman. Again, you can’t easily get the same aerobar tilt, or BTA bottle on more expensive models.

Great post! I have the version that I think is a year older than this, and there’s no pouch/snake to slide down into the top tube, are there any aftermarket that you would recommend? Love this bike!

@@gtn Probably not. I did a few sprints early on, but now I've settled into the longer distance races which I think suit us older people more (62). Barcelona Ironman, last year (final finisher), and this year (hope to beat that). It's pretty flat, well suited to a TT bike. Possibly do Valencia half next year, still on the TT bike.

in August 2023 I bought the current Speedmax CF7-disc, their lowest end Speedmax. A month after I bought it, I competed in a 70.3 that I had done before on my road bike. I was 15-minutes faster. I was very well prepared for the race and my training leading up to the race was perfect, so that also played it's part, but what I can't argue with is with my average speed. I only got to ride it about 10 times before my race, and I road it on all my favorite routes, climbs and straights. I was smashing Strava PR's on every ride that I had on my road bike. I averaged 20.5mph during the 70.3. I have never averaged better than 19 mph on my road bike on a course that long.

I have ridden a Cervelo P3X for the last 4 years and love it - TT BIKE Upper level bike. Last couple years also have ridden a Trek Madone SLR9 and about 2 months ago got a new 2024 Trek Madone SLR9 -Mads Peterson edition. Ride Madone-Mads maybe twice and Cervelo once every 3 rides (rotate but ride Trek a little more only because it’s new ). When I ride I basically the same average speed on both bikes but they ride completely different. It is very interesting to see how they feel different on different parts of the same ride but results are very very similar.
I think as long as you have a top line bike -Road or TT/Tri bike they will perform similarly. Just my experience.

  • @bikeybrian

I have been trying to get comfortable on the TT bike. After 2 + hours on the TT I find I become less comfortable and start spending a bit more time on the bull horns instead of the aero position. You commonly see this in the second half of an IM. Many people riding Triathlon bikes in a non aero position. We are not all limber serious athletes.
It would be interesting to see how Triathlon Bike in non aero V road bike, and is there a level at how much time you need to spend in the aero position before it starts been counter productive.
