I believe we in Kerala didn't just have a rudimentary understanding of Catholicism when the Jesuits arrived in the 16th century. Mar Thoma Nazranis ( St.Thomas Christians ) already had an organised hierarchical system and archdeaconry. I am afraid their arrival had the opposite effect that St.Francis would have desired on our church. We thank God that the Syrian tradition of Catholicism has been preserved to a certain extent due to the efforts of our forefathers and the Popes.

The spelling is Javier , being Xavier the XVI th century spelling to represent the sound “j” which is pronounced like the “h” in house. San Francisco Javier is how it’s spelled today . The same happens with Méjico: the old XVI th century spelling was Mexico but the pronunciation was “j”. You may ask a Spanish speaking person how to pronounce Javier because when you said his name I understood : saviour.
I enjoyed the story of the life of this great saint and learnt many things about his life that I Didn’t know!
