Santal royal has become my favorite! Buying a back up! Other I hated was Amouage journey man... wow, absolutely LOVE and grand sour I agree ! So surprised you didn't love Santal royal from the get go... it'd a masterpiece IMO.

The only one I tried from you list was Antaeus. I asked myself the same question like you - why anybody would want to wear that? And what did I do two weeks ago? I bought my first bottle. The journey through understanding perfumes helps you to understand yourself, your changing tastes, maturing and expanding your comfort zone. I never thought I would develop this type of hobby and I would challenge what I like in smells.

First tried Antaeus in a Mall on skin and was actually embarrassed at how I must smell, it was strong and overwhelming and horrible, the next Saturday I bought a bottle and have loved it ever since !

Grand soir and Santal Royal were love at first sniff. Antaeus i hated it at first but now understand it much more. I still wouldnt wear Antaeus its too 1980s for me. That thing is hella powerful though

Enjoyed the video. An essential topic as every enthusiast experiences this on some level, some more than others. I actually really enjoy it when my opinion changes on a scent, it feels as if I found something that I was missing or solved a puzzle. A few examples are I genuinely hated Fahrenheit through my 20’s. I don’t know if it came with age or just diversifying my nose but I love it now. Baccarat Rouge 540 was sickeningly sweet (carnival cotton candy) for about the first ten wears but that sweetness became more subtle and the woods, resins & amber not only became more noticeable but eventually became dominant. It was as if the focus of a camera lens shifted from the sugar in the background to the wood in the foreground. The iris note was a grower for me, particularly in the Dior Homme line, I hated them for years before they eventually won me over. I could go on but those are just a few of the examples, Creed Erolfa, Terre d’Hermes Eau Tres Fraiche both had some kind of unpleasant sour musty note in them that I didn’t enjoy at first. MFK Aqua Universalis both the original and the Forte iteration originally were way too floral and feminine but eventually the citrus & musks came to dominate the florals and I am crazy about those fragrances now. Diptyque’s 34 BSG edp smelled commercial & synthetically sweet the first couple wearings but now smells vividly natural, I can’t get enough of that woody, resinous, herbal work of art now. I can go on for days...

Absolutely great topic... I've learned that it really is a journey... I used to give up on shit and move on. But now I know that I have to be patient and learn and grow and work with a fragrance. And when it clicks it's such an awesome feeling. Santal Royal is one of my favorites in my collection... Thanks for this Eugene I feel less weird for not appreciating things straight away lol

Great to see you changing your mind on these 5. Antaeus was my first fragrance ever, so it's a long love affair, Santal Royal on the other hand I just loathed at first and now I find it one of my favorites from Les Absolus d'Orient. Never tried the malle one. Grand Soir is great but I still think it's a bit linear. Always liked Breath of God.

Music for awhile was straight lavender first up on my skin. Sprayed it on skin, walked around the shops, went back and grabbed a bottle. I hardly get much sweetness on my skin. Wears similar to hacivat on me.

Antaeus was one of my first I had ever purchased, and I was 20 or so! I had smelled it at the counter's and was fascinated, both by the scent and the presentation. So I had purchased it. But when arriving home and spraying it I was overwhelmed and thought that I could not wear this! So it made its place to the deepest corner of the closet; until last year, after some YTubbies commented on it, so I had to give it another try and I kinda like it. Hard to say whether or not it has contained the original scent from back then (18y ago).

Happy to see that u reflected on Music for a While! U even called it sort of a sh*** fougere blended perfume. The sweetness is balanced with the sharpness of the perfume. This is a classy perfume concentration and Aventus would love to smell like this.

Holy crap. I just picked up my bottle of Music For A While... Which I put away months ago because it was too sweet. I sprayed some just to see why I didn't like it and I thought exactly like you, it changed! The patchouli definitely got stronger. I clicked on this vid after I did this and I'm glad you have reinforced exactly what I experienced. Definitely more wearable after it got some air and sat for 4 months.

Its always good to revisit stuff you hated each *season* . I feel like they actually smell different when used in an actual setting rather than imagining how it would fit to it. Case in point i disliked Dunhill icon when i smelled it in winter but come spring this year i started to love it.

  • @tombarsens1277
    @tombarsens1277 4 года назад +3

Once i really dislike a fragrance, there is usually no turning back i feel. I give them a try every now and then, but hard to change my mind and go to a love. It must at least be a neutral for me to love it eventually. Usually there is something in there that i just dislike and if that doesn't go away, i won't be liking them at all. Funny enough, i liked most of these from the start. Antaeus, Music for a While and Grand Soir i bonded immediately.
There is one exception, that is Noir Epices. I really disliked it, got a sample and it smelled like my grandmother. Key is to keep wearing it slowly and not put too much on, after a while you either appreciate it or not. Luckily, i turned on it and love it now. I always try to finish off the samples or decants to give it a fair shot over time.
There are also fragrances that i love, hate and then love again. Two of them are Zino and Egoiste. Maybe it was because i was too young at the time, but i loved them on the test strip and bought them immediately. But when i was wearing them, the imperfections came to light. Maybe i was smelling too many of the safe designer scents at the time and failed to appreciate them. I kept the bottles and went back to them, and now i love them just like i tried them for the first time.

I reviewed this because I'm considering a MFK purchase. As you found and so have many other reviewers found, that MFK BR540 and his other blends, have some ingredients that make people agnostic (spelling?). So as you begin your new brand, remember to always take care of your NOSE! Sounds funny but in the same way a singer takes care of their throat, there must be ways that Perfumers take care of their Noses! You amaze me in how many fragrances you've smelled and can remember the notes. Maybe there has to be some 'clean room' in your life where you don't smell anything.
I love the stories where hobbies become the thing you were meant to do in life. It must be an amazing feeling and weight off your mind to have all those out-of-place, disjointed, angst-inducing puzzling pieces in your life settle down and line up on the map of your next journey. This makes sense (pun) in all ways as the next step for you. You've been preparing for it for so long. All those bottles in your collection now become your library. All the scent memories have given you the scent experience. Good on you mate, as they say. And yes I'd love to provide feed back so don't forget the little people as you grow!

Can relate to the Chanel. Keep sniffing it in department stores but never commit. Amouage gold is similar for me . I gave a sample of pour le soir to a friend who loved it. She met a friend for coffee on a summers day and liberally sprayed it on. She told me later all she could smell was piss and she never wore it again. Think it put her of perfume for good.

My problem with Grand Soir is it starts out 10/10, then flips into powdery mode 🤬🖕. I sold my bottle but honestly considering buying another one currently. My cardinal rule is the fragrance MUST remain good through the mids and into the drydown - and this is where GS fails IMO.

Antaeus opened a lane for me. It's the one which made me understand that kind of chypre. Now I have in the pack the Narciso For Him line (including the Musc line), some versions of Kouros and the king of the tribe: Orange Spice, by Creed. This one is BRUTAL. If you have the chance to try it, I sincerely recommend it.

I haven't bought a lot of the ones I didn't like, so I have more fragrances that I used to like which I now like less or even dislike. I remember thinking Declaration smelled like a kebab shop I visited in Birmingham, but that was when I was just getting into fragrances. Allure Homme Sport Extreme actually smelled very synthetic and slightly annoying for a while, but I like it more now, although I rarely use it. I used to think Naxos was too sweet, but as I tried it again years later it was a lot more balanced. I don't find it very similar to Pure havane, Naxos is about the lavender, and is quite versatile as far as seasons and occasions go.

I loved Santal Royal from the beginning 1914 when it came out bought it Easter 2015, great all year round fragrance, but in the beginning, there was a great deal of fuck up, a substance that burnt ad made my throat dry. HOWEVER after a year the dry substance that cause some dryness/burning in my throat has subsided and the new bottles are not burning my throat any more, I have tested samples and I have 3 bottles sitting in my room out of fear of them being discontinued. I have a theory that the blend has macerated nicely and it is now ready to wear it fearlessly. All natural compounds in a perfume is a unicorn. No chemicals = no longevity = no sillage.

One for me, I maybe was in fragcom a month and bought a few samples. Amouage Jubilation, I just got a picture of this middle eastern guy bringing presents to Jesus and I was like, why the fuck would you want to smell like that. Recently tried it again after having more experience. I wouldn't say I love it, it's not for me, but I understand it and what it's trying to do. Still can't get around Dior Leather Oud. Vile upon first spray (especially on a blotter) but one time I ACCIDENTALLY got a fair amount of it on my hand or wrist... It just got better and better and I now also love it... And thinking back I kinda felt that way about Égoïste, though not as harshly and THAT one is a true love now... They say the willingness to try new foods is a measure of intelligence... I'm going to go out on a limb and say the same about perfume...!
