- In this video I'm absolutely insane trying to fish the Gold Coast in 30 odd knots of howling southeaster. I'm chasing flathead once again in search of my biggest for the spring season but with the elements against me it makes for hard going. I do see some hectic fish up in the shallows and catch a fish that's pretty common further north but a first for me down here.
The seaway seems to be a haven for these cod. I use to catch a bunch of them back in the day. We called them “Honeycomb Cod”. It’s good to see they’re still around as it’s been a good 20 years since I’ve caught one there.

That’s the beauty of fishing, you never really know what you’ll catch.

Grab some lures and keep moving and casting mate. It’s not hard just you just need to get the feel for it and you’ll be on your way.
Do you like those bent minnows? They always seem to produce for me, the flathead fucking love them on the sand flats of the south coast of NSW!
Yeah I’ve caught on the 130mm Bents just not on the 200mm Crossfire yet. Good shallow water baits especially when there’s minimal weed and you can rip em down into the sand.

Nice session in tough conditions, the big buggers are hard to get. A mate lost one due to us not having a big enough net and I also didn't do the best I could as we thought it was a nice gummy until we got view of it and then I think adrenalin and panic didn't help our chances. I should have grabbed the tail when it hit the bottom of the net. Hook got stuck in the net and it fell out backwards. Would have to be a meter at the smallest. The silence in the boat for 10 min said it all. Still need to go back to that spot to try and get one back.

Been try to organise a day up there with Art Rienstra but getting a mid week day that works for both of us has been tricky the last couple of months. I love that place mate and it’s been fishing well of late.

Well it was the first I’ve caught on the Gold Coast in over 20 years of fishing it so it’s pretty rare as far as I’m concerned mate. Pre 2012ing that shit.
