  • 'Modern Times' from 'Cinema Paradiso' by Stephen Goss
    Performed by Zoran Dukić
    Commissioned by GuitarCoop
'Cinema Paradiso' is music about film. Each of the six short movements pays homage to a director or genre.
This movement mickey-mouses a scene from Charlie Chaplin's 'Modern Times' (1936). Here Chaplin's character is working on a production line in a factory: the music shifts gear as the camera switches attention from one machine to another. Before long Chaplin can't keep up with the conveyor belt and ends up being swallowed by a large machine. After racing out of control, the machine grinds to a halt - as it starts up again Chaplin is gently regurgitated and production can continue.
    Emanuel Sowicz - Director
    John Taylor - Sound
    Pavel Ralev - Assistant

Saw Zoran in Seattle a couple years ago. Sat on the front row. He was amazing!

You know, every morning my son makes me a cup of coffee. He grinds the beans, preps an espresso machine and out comes a great cup of coffee, full of complex flavors with a burst of energy built right in. That's what this is like, it's the closest analogy I can think of. I like the complexities of the composition and the dynamic performance. Bravo.

I hope you don’t mind me saying so but unless you were being sarcastic, I find your comment to be pretentious. This is like your morning cup of espresso? It must taste horrible. OK, the music is energetic but it’s not beautiful.

@@niceguitar6144 wake up and smell the coffee. It's the 21st century. Mozart wrote for his time. Composers alive now write for this time. And what's pretentious about a son making a cup of coffee for his dad? If you are ever so honored to have earned someone's love, be happy, don't go around slagging it. Life is short.

@@wmg1958 hey, I apologize. My message was far less refined than intended to. I’m sure your coffee is just fine. I can even appreciate that you like this type of music. I continue to think that the peace sucks, and of course you are free to like it.

@@wmg1958 I need to work on my communication skills too. A son making his dad a cup of coffee is a wonderful thing, nothing pretentious about that. I just cannot understand how people like this music but that is my problem:)

@@niceguitar6144 what it is about contemporary music such as this is that the palette is so different that it is refreshing.
I love the music of e.g. Bach more than almost anything actually. But when the music we play uses that same language so much, hearing something like this piece is like experiencing a new flavor for the first time. Ever tried dry aged steak before? kind of like having that for the first time really.
I actually had the pleasure of meeting Stephen Goss at the Groningen Guitar Festival last week, he's a lovely guy. A lot of his compositions are also much more delicate and sweet, I think it's that contrast that makes his music really nice.

Strange but I bet I ain't got the wisdom to understand it

No, trust me: it isn’t you. This is music by definition but there’s nothing beautiful in it. This is a perfect way to turn people off from classical music even more.

Zoran’s talent is not in question but if this is music, I am Mozart. This type of nonsense chases people away from the classical music recitals, from the concert halls, from majoring in classical music oriented instruments
