Home Theater of the Month - The Bigham Theater

- Many Home Theaters of the Month are extravagant builds with performance and comfort that far exceeds most commercial cinemas. But the cost for such a room is equally extravagant, often running into six figures. That’s all well and good for those who can afford it, and those home theaters are certainly aspirational for the rest of us, which is why I feature them so often on AVS Forum.
But when Dusty Bigham (Bigham16) sent me some photos of his home theater in Lewisville, TX, I saw another side of the hobby, one that closely parallels the approach I took with my own home theater-achieving the highest possible performance without spending exorbitant amounts of money. So I arranged for AVS Forum Associate Editor Mark Henninger and me to visit Dusty while we were in Dallas for the CEDIA Expo and shoot an HT of the Month video in his modest home theater. As you’ll see, he has created a minimalist but elegant space in which the audio and video performance are paramount.
Note: There was a problem with the audio recording that we didn’t catch until it was too late; the audio in this video has been tweaked after the fact to compensate as best we could. The room sounds much better in person than it does in this recording.

I appreciate this more than words could tell. A 'look what you can do with correct money allocation' system is way more impressive to me than a thoughless 'look what you can never afford' system that has no room treatment of layout foresight.
Most of us start from the most basic systems and then many of us still have a fairly basic setup because thats all we can afford.
Fellow AVS'r here. It's nice to see the lofty home theaters that some may dream about but it's also really great to see well designed and more attainable projects such as the one featured.
Nice work keep it up!
Looks really good
Great home theater! Love the Goldenears, still have the DEF TEC BP7001SC myself, but Sandy Gross really knows how to design a great tower.
Exactly what I'm going for. I've started collecting my GoldenEar components when I find good deals. Need some invisas next. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice, well thought out application. Congratulations.
one of best ive seen in a while. very nice.
Hi Scott.
I love the Home Theater of the Month shows.
As a longtime recording artist, HT has always been
a magical part of my free time.
From the cheap to the priceless, I love it all.
I've found cheap 3 chip LED projectors that kick butt
& impress 1st time HT startups enuff to get em' kickedin and inspired
to continue it as a hobby.
While I've not seen alot, tell me. has your HT been featured in 1 of the shows?

Well done ... I wish you could turn it on and share the sound signature with us too.
nice budget theater Dusty. nice shirt Mark!
One of the nicest I've seen!!!!
This is modest?! Looks fantastic man!!
I got a Onkyo HTIB right now and some golden ears on the left and right side of my head. Hopefully I'll get some real equipment on my starting journey and land somewhere close to where he's arrived now in the near future.
I think it’s awesome well done :)
Excellent project the JVC dla something
Very nice
Love it.
What size room is it?
Need a bigger screen.
Thanks for the info.
2:38 - "Yeeaaahhhh....gowldun eaarzzz"
I honestly don't know how you caught that one! :D :D
I literally have this same exacrt home theater
The room is good but I think that 19:9 screen format is a big mistake today. 2.35:1 format is the rigth choice today.
Very very nicely done !!!
AVS forum , with a problem with the audio recording? This is what you get for using cheap gear, and not double checking your work. Guess it was not that important to go back and do the job right. but this is what you get when a forum pushes products, and gives biased information in favor of the manufacturers.
I am curious about soundproofing. Did you do a lot since it was new construction? How much noise bleed enters the outside rooms? I did my "media room/Home theater" before soundproofing was readily available , and was really expensive and I regret not doing more when I should have. THANKS and nice room
rad theater! Does anyone know the component shelving he is using for his tower?
GinjiVitis- They are VTI racks. If you look at the video carefully you will see it shown.
Thanks! Good catch, I didn't notice a logo at all the first time i watched it.
GinjiVitis - No problem. They are very nice looking so I understand why you'd be interested. Don't know why no else answered your question though.
@scottwilkinson do you have any pictures of your home theater? I'm trying to get some ideas.
Really great setup, those seats look seriously comfortable :D btw, I disagree about painting the doors black, I thought the white was a nice contrast and a relief to all the black, same with the white-ish carpet, I imagine the whole room would be incredibly bland if it was all black.
Sherman Williams paint as well. The MOST expensive paint. So much disposable income. When I pay more than .25 cents for a VHS tape I feel guilty.
Reasonable budget lol $7k on just the Nads....
what's the budget?
GREAT ROOM WHAT IS THE SIZE OF THE ROOM
great job
It's a nice theater. However, I find the all black on black a bit boring. Just my humble opinion.
P F For a dedicated home theatre you need all black walls, ceiling, doors and carpets to get the most out of the picture when the lights go off 👌🏾
Black is masculine. Can always add some movie pictures to the side walls and led light strips to spruce it up (led light strips turned off when watching movies of course)
@@C--A That’s not an accurate statement. Yes the black helps, but I’ve seen many without all black everything that was pretty darn amazing including my previous own.
Tooo small screen!!!
What is the room size
nice set up
what's that budget
Awesome theater! Might I ask what the cost approximately was? 😊
It would be over $45K for just the equipment alone.
pedra12 wrong.
from the article itself on avs that links to this.
"Dusty has bought and sold lots of gear over the last 10 years. Taking that into account, he estimates his total investment during that decade-not counting construction of his current house with its integrated media room-to be less than $20,000."
That includes all of his previously bought and sold gear.
He probably paid $10k for all his audio equipment you see here.
Dale Chalfont Yes, but I you were just buying the equipment first hand then the cost would be much greater. Dustin did use a lot of BBy points and trading to get the cost down I agree.
pedra12 Well in $AUS I spent 20k on a speaker setup better than what is here ( by a small margin ) and we pay the 'F-YOU-You're-from-the-southern-hemisphere' tax, meaning brand new you could likely easily get a similar or identical sound portion of the setup for 10k.
The projector is probably where half the money went.
Dale Chalfont yeah. no doubt. I just took his equipment list and priced it out on Amazon and Crutchfield. That was my reasoning behind the price I gave.
can I ask what this all cost? ball park
I'm gonna guess between $18k and $25k.
darwando
I think that projector is like 10k. And those towers are not to far behind
Jesus Christ the echo and the mouth breather needs to be fixed...
That sucked!!!!
Did not get to see it or hear it.
