  • In Sun Yuan and Peng Yu’s can’t help myself, an industrial robot turns and flexes restlessly, programmed to ensure that a thick, deep red liquid stays within a predetermined area. part of the the international art exhibition may you live in interesting times, curated by ralph rugoff for the 2019 venice art biennale, the robot is placed within a transparent ‘cage’, almost like a creature captured and put on display.
Sun Yuan and Peng Yu have programmed the robot in can’t help myself to keep the thick, deep red liquid within a predetermined area. this blood-like fluid continually oozes away, triggering the robot’s sensors and prompting the machine to shovel it back into place. the artists have ‘taught’ the robot to perform 32 different movements - from ‘scratch an itch’ to ‘ass shake’ - giving it an uncanny, mesmerizing human grace. for sun yuan and peng yu the uncontrollable liquid that the machine keeps trying to contain conjures what they perceive to be art’s essential elusiveness, its defiant refusal to being pinned down and fixed in place. This work was originally produced for the exhibition "Tales of our time" at the Guggenheim Museum, New York.
At the moment it's viewing is still available in Venice, Biennale Arte 2019.

Personally a piece of art has never made me feel like this. The way it moves around so quickly to clean another spot feels overwhelmed and worried and when it just swings around and doesn't try and clean it feels as if it's trying not to break down and is trying to calm down and express something. I've never had an art instillation affect and relate to me like this before and it makes me look at certain art different.

I see it that way as well. you can see at certain moments when it raises itself and it stays still while its arm moves slowly back and forth. It almost remnds me of trying to take deep breaths during moments of overwhelming frustration

What gets me when it keeps rocking back and forth for a bit like it’s trying to catch it’s breathe but seemly on the verge of having a mental breakdown and that there’s no way of stopping the fluid that continually keeps leaking out of it which it keeps trying ..hits hard

For those confused, it's an art installation. The machine is leaking hydraulic fluid. It's trying to keep it inside, but the leak will kill it anyway.

This Artwork: 'Can't help myself' commissioned for the Guggenheim Museum, created by Sun Yuan & Peng Yu came up on my timeline.
I lost my Aunt this week. She died after a lifetime of trauma, abuse, neglect, physical and mental illness. This artwork is the most powerful metaphor for her life.
Most people did just stand and watch or became so damaged and traumatised themselves by her flailing though life that they stepped away. I did what I could to help her in the last years of her life. But she had lost so much and my support couldn't stem the flow. I hope at least she was able to die at peace within herself, in comfort and with dignity. I hope I was able at least give her that.

It reminds me of myself... 🥺... I worked at a job that I loathed for 10 years. It drained me, gave me severe depression and was a huge factor in my divorce. When I first started there, I was happy to be there. During the last couple years I worked there, I just went through the motions, like a zombie. Idk if anyone else has seen the comparison video between the first installation and some of the last footage before it broke down, but it hits me hard.

I find it interesting that others keep imbuing this device with suffering, stress, panic, helplessness, etc. It's a machine programmed to do a task in a particular way. It has no brain nor soul. Any of the feelings that well up while watching this piece are yours alone. But of course that's a big part of what art is all about.

it used to like wave and dance to people while scraping up just a little bit of fluid but over time as the amount of fluid increased it slowly started to have less time to be all happy dancing and stuff. After a while it's just scraping the fluid just barely managing to keep up until it dies... I heard a theory that it was about how people slowly start to deteriorate because they find they have less time to do what they enjoy and instead only focus on working to just "scrape" by. Recently I found that the fluid wasn't even essential to keep it living; We're so enveloped in work that we forget to enjoy what we're working for in the first place

I thought the substance on the floor-was hydraulic fluid, the blood of the machine to function, and it was trying it’s best to keep the pump fed of the hydraulic fluid to keep running but eventually losing to much fluid being careless and splatting it on the walls and it would stop. All though we as humans do our best and work hard death is always on the menu.

I see this in a different light then others. It still looks happy, but it's getting old and tired. It has to crack it's back and stretch to get the kinks out but it still goes on shimmying for the viewers around it and doing what it loves to do tell the end of it's days

A lot of people are talking about minimum wage workers but I really feel like this robot lately, it feels like the constant battle with mental health. You start out acting fine but on the inside you're dying, and eventually you lose everything that makes you a person and you end up losing the battle. You are stuck in a constant unhealthy state of mind, stuck trying to pick up the pieces of yourself, but nothing is working because you need help. But you are expected to help yourself, because that's what being independent means, isn't it?

It's the blood of the machine.. It's hydraulic fluid- the fluid that makes the machine able to work. Without the fluid, the machine will crash and go stiff, like a human under the effects of rigor mortis
