    ‘Shoulda Known Better’ is like a sequel to ‘Rhythm Nation’. The last lyrics that she sings is “I had this great epiphany, and Rhythm Nation was the dream. I guess next time I’ll know better.

    • @TreMcLeod_
      @TreMcLeod_ 2 года назад

      Do you think that lyric is about Rhythm Nation the album? Or Rhythm Nation the record label?

    • @jefftoney9449
      @jefftoney9449 2 года назад +6

      Rhythm Nation the album/song. Because the issues that she talked about in 1989 are still going on today. Some other lyrics are. “Part of a revolution, ready for real solutions, we won’t accept excuses. Cause I don’t want my face to be, that poster child for being naive. I guess I shoulda known better.”

    • @njt7117

      I agree. The final lryic may be sad as she was suggesting her Rhythm Nation vision had not come to fruition as she had hoped.

    YESSSS Do you know.... oh this takes me back to 1st listen, this was so....BEYOND what I had even hoped for. So here's the breakdown for a few.
    Should've Known Better: It's a dark sequel to where her mind was at 23 for Rhythm Nation vs. 49 for Unbreakable.....it's the affirmation that there's still so much work to do, and that in the distance of 26 years there has been so little fundamental world change on the topics that Rhythm Nation was about, so I find the chorus of "Part of the revolution, Ready for real solutions, We won't accept excuses, We tolerate no abuses,'Cause I don't want my face to be, That poster child for being naive" like a rallying cry that IM STILL FIGHTING FOR US...and I hope you are too, and we should've known better to think that it was ever time to slow down or stop the fight.
    After You Fall was the 1st song she recorded reuniting with Jam & Lewis, and it's beautiful because it's really the 1st song where she acknowledges her treatment in the media....it's the track we've all needed, but even then though she still makes it relatable & applicable for anyone who can relate to a fall.
    Awww your reaction to Broken Hearts Heal! Yes, funny thing about that, Jimmy Jam said it's the only song she's ever recorded where she was in the booth like Michael would be, he said Michael in the booth (for Scream & other songs they worked on) did all the things you don't do in the recording booth, stomp, clap, dance(/move to much), and that that wasn't how Janet recorded at all EXCEPT....Broken Hearts Heal, so I appreciate hearing the claps & stomps & movement
    YOUR FACE AT THE START OF NIGHT WAS MINE AT 1st LISTEN!!! To me... if this were the era where she wanted hits, THAT should've been 1st single.
    MMPH No Sleep does something special to me too, it's the 1st single, and it's just so..."plush" lol, it's so grown & sexy! It's a true return to the likes of That's The Way Love Goes & Got Til It's Gone, and to me though I personally would've chosen Night as the 1st single or "Im back" drop, No Sleep... is a different type of "I'm Back", Night is the welcome back party with the friends & fam, No Sleep is the welcome back home, where the lover is waiting, OR even it's just you, welcome back home quietly & peacefully.
    Dream Maker/Euphoria is so deliciously experimental!
    I ADORE the chorus to 2 B Loved, the words & how it's sung, a great ear worm
    LOFL YOUR TAKE ME AWAY INTRO! It got me excited for how you'd like it and I was right!
    I ADORE Promise Of You (the full version, they messed up making the full version a Target exclusive, when it REALLY fits the album well)
    Lessons Learned....So deep, loved your commentary about it. Especially about how emotional her voice got, I love her voice with "I just want my baby back", after her revelations in her doc about her 2nd marriage to her creative partner, it's almost abundantly clear that it's about him, and she gave us some great material about him Son Of A Gun & Truth, and this joins those songs.
    Well Traveled, she absolutely got that effect live, and you're right, I never thought about it before but I'd love the recorded version more if it had that
    GON BE ALRIGHT IS 1 OF MY FAVORITE SONGS EVER, SHE GAVE US JACKSON 5 & SLY & THE FAMILY STONE WITH THAT ONE, I love all the ways she played with her voice, including them making her sound like a guy at 1 pitch too lol. BUT ITS EPIC, it's a sound I always wanted to hear her touch, and she absolutely did!
    I'll end with, do you know I see this as a insight to the fact that Janet Jackson has not hit a wall of any kind when it comes to how creative & original she is, she has a whole bag of sounds topics & voices she hasn't even given us yet, and this album showcased that, and it did what the last 2 (hell for me personally, what the previous 4) needed, everything they lacked this album had in spades, and the only thing this lacked was like you said baby making music (which again....Promise Of You is actually that song, but again it got edited to a snippet, but the whole song gives that vibe though lyrically still it's NOT, it's very deep, but the vibe is babymaking).

    The very last lyric of Shoulda Known Better explains the entire meaning of the song. This album, to me, is a near perfect piece of work. Its tone throughout, the flawless transition from song to song, Jimmy and Terry’s truly immaculate production, the INCREDIBLE lyrics - her writing was the best I’ve ever heard from her. Even the cover photography is just…gorgeous. She had a lot to say and presented and packaged it just perfectly.

    Here's the tea!...The reason why there wasn't any sexy R&B tracks on "Unbreakable", because Janet was Married to that Qatari Billionaire, Wissam Al Mana, at the time this album was released..When she did the "Unbreakable" tour, she was covered from head to toe majority of the "Unbreakable " era, because he was a devout Muslim. He didn't even allow her to have male dancers at that time. The tour got postponed because Janet was blessed to get pregnant with her 1st child at 50..Wissam got very controlling during her pregnancy..He was verbally abusive to her. Even her Brother Randy, had to step in and defend his Sister from him.. That is why Janet left him after her Son Eissa, was born. I believe that song "Lesson Learned" was about her Marriage to Wissam, or a combination of him and her previous relationships.

    Not only was it so refreshing after the last few, but it was also after a 7+ year break where she basically fell off the face of the earth for a few years in the early ‘10s.
    This album was so affirming as a fan, and it went #1, and No Sleep was a hit on R&B radio. She’s honestly dumb for taking this long to put out the follow up.
    There are 2 bonus tracks - Promise of You (the full version of Promise) and Love U 4 Life (kind of a sex bop) that you can find on RUclips!

If she had released this in the 90s she would have had at least six top 10 singles with BurnItUp and Take Me Away hitting #1.
    I really enjoyed the more mature sounds of Lessons Learned and Well Traveled too. Those could have reached #1 on the AC charts. This album had a little bit fot everyone.

    Shoulda known better reflects on the idea she had back in 1989, that music could change the world for the better. She's specifically referring to her Rhythm Nation album, which called for social change at the time. With shoulda known better, she realizes how naive she was and that the world is still dealing with the same social issues 26 years later.

    This album was released on her own label. So she can release anything whenever she wants to. That's part of the irritating thing about that. She knows Black Diamond is complete. She just won't release it.
    Now to this history making album. (With this album going number 1, Janet became the 4th artist ever, first Black artist, to have number 1 albums in 4 consecutive decades) The title track is a love letter to the fans. I cried the first time I actually listened to it. Shoulda Known Better is essentially explained with the last lyric. That hurt me so much. Like fetal position bawling on the kitchen floor type hurt. And that didn't stop until Night.
    But for real, you should look into doing B-sides, leaked, and other songs of hers that didn't make album cuts. There are a LOT of gems there. Let me know if you want some direction.....
