Good presentation on how to take a charge!
I would always fall to take a charge. I would let my knees buckle just a millisecond before the contact, which meant I was already going backwards when the offensive player hit me. This minimised the pressure on my body, without looking like it.
It also meant my contact on the floor was a slide on my bottom, which minimised the impact with the floor to very little.
Finally, as soon as I hit the floor, I'd bang both my elbows on the wood floor, which was both surprisingly loud and surprisingly painless. This made it seem like more contact than it was.
I found all this to be extremely effective at both getting the offensive charge called, without hurting.

Thanks! That’s a great comment! I havnt heard of many players doing the elbow thing, I have heard of players slapping the ground though when they land.

@@bballcoachallen I accidentally discovered the elbow thing, and used it to good effect for many years. I don't remember seeing anyone else using it. The rest, I was taught by coaches as a kid.

This is by far one of the most difficult calls we make as officials. My only issue with this video is that in order for a defensive player to draw the offensive foul, his feet do not necessarily have to be planted. His position must be established and the player has the verticality. Although not common, it is possible to draw the charge if the defender is jumping straight up but it hardly ever happens. I've actually only called it once in a JV game.

Your correct, but that defensive player would have to be jumping straight up in his “cylinder” which like you say is really hard to call

@@bballcoachallen The only reason I made that call that one time is because the defensive player was jumping straight up and down long before the offensive player made contact (the defensive player wasn't very good). I don't think I will ever call it again.

I want to learn to do this as players in my area are reckless but very athletic unlike me so I want to do this to make up for my unathletic self.

Coach, are there any tips on when to plant the feet? Sometimes if i do it too early, they could easily do euro step. Sometimes they call defensive foul because they said i plant it too late? Can you explain on when is the right time?

So if you're inside that line near the basket what are you supposed to do as a defender if a shooter approaches you? Get out of the way? And in what instance is an offensive player considered a shooter. Let's say I was planted inside that zone and someone drives and charges into me? Is that a foul on me then, as opposed to outside the zone? Thanks!

Is this Charge only in the paint are can a defensive player take a charge half out as well?

So it’s legal to be in the position you would be in when you set a screen?

Yes if they run through the screen it's a charge

I literally tried drawing two charges today and messed up like my elbow lmao but the first time I kept my arms out cuz I thought it still counts as legal guarding positions like by arms out I mean my arms were to the side like your being taught to play defense for the first time but for the second time apparently since he euro stepped into my shoulder it wasn’t straight on so it was a blocking foul both times which I thought is kinda bs but let me know if I’m wrong

arms have to be down or up not out to your sides .. and you need to be planted with your whole body and feet not moving

By all means, I'm just a greeny when it comes to fouls in basketball. Still, when it comes to actual NBA games I'm watching now, I feel there is a tendency to favor the offense, and charges are very rarely called if the defensive player hasn't established a legal guarding stance clearly before contact. Any movement involved seems to lead to a defensive foul. Even if the player seems to be in the right stance, but achieved it just before the contact, then this is still called a defensive foul. Just my impression. By the way, how this is translated to guarding on the perimeter, where we as defenders move by sliding motion? We are not planted with both feet, hence theoretically any contact enforced on us by the offensive player should be treated as a defensive foul. I love this game, but I stay really confused when it comes to recognition between offensive (charge) and defensive (block) fouls. :/

This is wrong. You can move just not towards the player. Meaning you can move back for balance.

Incorrect you have to stay inside your cylinder … they changed the rule a few years ago
