  • The third piece in the trilogy shot and recorded just before the pandemic lockdown of 2020, I'm pleased to present Caleb Klauder performing Billy Gray in the living room of Frank Lloyd Wright's Millard House (also known as La Miniatura) in Pasadena, California. It was a dream to see this come to life. With the support of Brian Morrow and his team at Sharkpig, Daniel McCoy, Brad Benge, Anthony Puglisi, and Keston Ridley, we combined our interests in portraiture, music, and architecture to honor the talents of these fine musicians - and make these intimate videos.
About Caleb Klauder: Caleb has been touring nationally and internationally for over 20 years. He has been leading his own band, the Caleb Klauder Band, since 2000, a venue for his original and timeless songs. He is also a founding member of the widely celebrated Foghorn Stringband, with whom he tours regularly.
About the Millard House: Built in 1923, The Millard House is one of Wright's four textile block houses. It's nestled into a shady ravine, and the uniquely cast bricks are made with sand, gravel, and minerals found on the property. Wright himself took great pride in Millard House. He said of it: "I would rather have built this little house than St. Peter's in Rome.". The Millard House is now considered one of Wright's finest works, and we're grateful for the opportunity to spend the day in it creating these recordings of such special performances.

An absolute perfect performance. The guitar playing, the singing, the mood, the sound, the song, the film. Perfection.

Billy Gray rode into Gantry back in '83.
There he did meet young Sarah McRae,
The wild rose of morning, that pale flower of dawning,
Herald of springtime in his young life that day.
Sarah she could not see the daylight of reality.
In her young eyes Billy bore not a flaw.
Knowing not her chosen one was a hired gun,
Wanted in Kansas City by the law.
Then one day a tall man came riding 'cross the Badlands
Lying to the north of New Mexico.
He was overheard to say he was looking for Bill Gray,
Perilous man and a dangerous outlaw.
Well the deadly news came creeping to Billy, fast sleeping,
There in the Clarendon Bar and Hotel.
He fled toward the old church there on the outskirts
Thinking he'd climb to that old steeple bell.
But a rifle ball came flying, face down he lay dying
There in the dust of the road where he fell.
Sarah she ran to him, just cursing the lawman,
Accepting no reason, knowing he was killed.
Sarah lives in that same old white frame house
Where she first met Billy some forty years ago.
And the wild rose of morning, she's faded with the dawning
With each day of sorrow the long years have sown.
And written on a stone where the dusty winds have long blown
Eighteen words to a passing world say:
"True love knows no season, no rhyme, nor no reason.
Justice is cold as the Granger County clay."
Yes "True love knows no season, no rhyme, nor no reason.
Justice is cold as the Granger County clay".

I can tell that is a vintage Martin, it appears smaller than Reeb's 000-18. Is it a 00-18 or 00-28? I would like to hear both you and Reeb play vintage Martin D-28s. You are the most versatile classic (20s & 30s) musician I had ever heard. Your voice is so distinctive. Also, you play mandolin with a gusto that makes many bluegrass players look anemic. You are really quite an artist. I am 67 and just starting to learn guitar. I want to be able play rhythm like Reeb when I "grow up." I am afraid I waited too late in life to start playing.

      Caleb’s guitar is a 1938 00-17. Maybe 1939. I’d have to check my notes.

@@jimsatterfield8748 I believe 0-15’s started in 1940. When introduced they were only available as size 0 and had a satin finish, as they were slightly cheaper. This is a 00 and predates the 0-15 by a couple years.

I still think Planxy’s version is best. You can’t beat Christy Moore. I do like this, though.
