Engine failure, wing is bent (at an 87.3 degree angle for you plane experts), several passengers dying, 2 doors missing, and no flap control, but it’s not an emergency.
Okay here's one I heard many years ago I hope I can do it justice. Back in the 70s A British Airways pilot had just landed in Frankfurt. The ATC was directing him to the terminal but the BA pilot wasn't understanding him. Both are getting frustrated. ATC: haven't you ever been to Frankfurt before? BA Pilot: Yes, twice in 1944 but it was dark and I didn't land! It still cracks me up every time I tell it 😂
German pilot starts talking to a German ATC in German. Thr ATC comes back says you must use English. German pilot says, I'm a German citizen, flying a German made aircraft, flying for a German airline, in Germany, why do I need to speak English? A British voice comes on radio, cause you lost the war!
I think that plane the pilot was flying had *FOUR* engines, and it wasn't anywhere near capacity. Basically, they could easily coast on two. It wasn't an emergency because... well... it wasn't.
Read an old Air Force comic from back in the day when the F-4's got bored escorting B-52s around and started doing stunts. So a fed-up B-52 pilot finally told the escorts, "This big girl can do something you showboats cant!" "No way," the escorts replied. "There!" said the B-52 pilot. "What, you didn't do anything!" "I just shut down two of my engines. Why don't you try it!"
The best thing is that's it's really not a big deal, 2 out of 4 could fail before the plane gets into serious trouble, it might get a bit harder to maneuver and a lot slower but it won't fall out of the sky. They are over engineered as fuck when you think about it 😂
@@JoJoGaminG36I understand that. But you have to listen to the original. Because the ATC wants to get the pilot to report an emergency, i.e. Mayday. But the pilot doesn't want to deal with the paperwork that follows. That was a Lufthansa flight from JFK to FRA with a 747-800
@@JoJoGaminG36it also depends which ones fail. The rudder can compensate the loss of an outer engine, however it was never certified to lose both engines on one side. You would need a huge rudder to compensate that asymmetric thrust, which would cause unnecesary drag. Even if the left over thrust would be sufficient the asymetric thrust of 2 lost engines on one side would be a problem. That's one reason why twinjets typically have their engines relatively close to the fuselage, and not where the outboard engines on a quadjet sit
If you go by the book, single engine failure isn't an emergency with a plane that size unless the pilot thinks there is a risk of additional engine failures or they're down to 1 engine. If it's an isolated problem in 1 engine it's nothing to worry about when you're coming in to land already.

Yeah, the pilots just didn't want the hassle of declaring an emergency. 4 engine plane, right next to the airport, low weight so plenty of margins, plenty of fuel, clear weather. They figured the paperwork was worse then just flying on 3 engines
@@CharlesFreck It's not just that, standard procedure says a single engine failure on a 4 engine plane is not cause for declaring an emergency. Only if the pilot expects additional engine failures should he declare an emergency.

@@RJRJ 100% accurate. And it was at the arrival end so it had burned through a lot of fuel. If the engine failure occurred after take off and they had to return to the departure airport...he likely declares an emergency.
Just for context. The Jet that had an engine failure was a Lufthansa 747. It has 4 thrusters and 1 engine failure is actually not a big deal, if you have 4 thrusters since you still got 3.
@@BattleshipOrionA thruster doesnt need to be able to go into space in order to be a contraption that provides thrust. Turbofan engines provide a lot of thrust as long as there is a medium with a mass (preferably gas (air, for aircraft) or fluid (water for jet boats and jet skis (when striclty talking about jets - propellers obviously also provide thrust in air and water) around that can be accelerated. If you dont have the medium around, you need to bring that medium with you, like you'd do in a space craft (something that can be ionized for ion thrusters or the thing you burnt that also releases a fast and powerful shockwave as you use it). Newtons 3rd law specifically states that you always must leave something behind in order to go forward. So in order to change your velocity (accelerate into any direction) you need some medium to apply some force to. This is also true in space. So I dont see how atmospheric thrusters are different from those you'd find in a space ship apart from where the medium comes from and some specific technical details about what kind of fuel they burn or dont burn. You could argue that even a car has a thruster - but the word is usually recognized with contraptions that provide thrust without having to touch solid ground (such as prop, jet, fan, ion or any other kind of contraption that provides thrust). If you want to get super specific and picky, you first gotta define what exactly space is? How empty of a vacuum does "there" (where exactly) need to be in order for you to consider it "space". If you say "anywhere where there isnt enough air pressurewise to be able to breathe" is to be considered space, then yes: The 747 can co into space.
There was a plan to stick an improbable number of cruise missiles inside one at one point. Never went anywhere, but the general notion got us the Rapid Dragon system, which turns random military cargo planes into high-volume cruise missile launchers.
After the third failed approach, the annoyed flight controller asked the Pan Am pilot, "Have you ever flown to Frankfurt?" and the pilot answers "Several times in the mid-40s, but I never landed".
That one was apparently a Lufthansa 747. Good pilots, and it's a problem but not an emergency without a heavy payload, with adequate fuel, near the airport, if nothing else is wrong. They still had 3 more running.
