I had liver cancer this time last year. They took out a third of my liver and I got better. Only surgery, no ‘therapies’. Then my 19 year relationship ended, not my decision. So I took off as soon as I could and have been in SE Asia travelling for the last 5 months. I’m 59 and from the UK. I’ve had some great experiences but grief and the big D travel with me. Wherever you go you take yourself with you.
Found your humour on this trip, definitely made the world funnier and better. Thank you.

The hardest part about depression, at least personally, is accepting that it won't go away. You're spot on with the wave analogy; you just have to ride out the lows until the high hits again.
Regarding David Foster Wallace, I think he just got worn down bit by bit. He was never good at connecting with others (his own words), and adding depression on top of that has to be the lönlöst deepest hole one can find oneself in.
Sorry for the rambling, it's just that this episode hit close to home. Love the pod, you're crushing it!

I think it’s huge and awesome that you are embracing depressive moments and being able to experience them and even get something good out of it like discovering puzzling and a clean apartment!
I think it would be really interesting to have a very old person on the show to ask them those questions. I myself definitely fear getting old, mostly because of the discomfort and lack of relevance in society. But I’ve never been upset by being forgotten or a lack of legacy. It’s just never occurred to me to give a shit about that for whatever reason? Interesting stuff to talk about! Thanks! You are rad.

Hi Jordan~ Im going thru this too. I was majorly depressed for over a decade (Im 33) and am just getting out of it. I think there can be a weird empty feeling when you've been depressed for so long, then its is "gone" (not really but...). Depression can be part of what builds your identity on some level and dictates the way you navigate the world. When it is gone or less present, it can feel weirdly empty or light/too spacious. Your mindset is good - I can tell you're on a positive track. Just keep going and have tons of grace for yourself - that part actually becomes enjoyable. Love the solo eps. I, too, have a stack of puzzles.

The way I'd describe depression is emptiness without an outlet.
That's why I don't like ppl saying they're depressed when they're just sad. It's like, you're crying. You have a release. There's some catharsis.
I'd even say crying feels good when you haven't produced serotonin in decades.
That's why some ppl off themselves. It feels like the only release when you're in the thick of the darkness.
    But anywho. That's just me

So much of this resonated with me, so it must with many others. I love laughing my ass off with your comedy (which I really need), but this flip side is truly therapeutic. I would never wish depression on anyone, but there’s some kind of comfort in knowing you’re not alone… that someone else gets it. Regardless of whether you’re talking about depression, OCD, anxiety, ADD or whatever, I hope you’ll continue doing solos. Thanks Jordan.

I will be 39 in August. I have never been able to articulate my feelings the way you can and I have never heard someone describe my entire being as accurately as you can describe your life and the waves that make up every measurement of the time we spend on earth. I do know that I have felt more confident and less incompetent every year after the age of 26 and I have been told it only gets better as long as you continue to acknowledge that this is a part of who you are and you will always have to be conscious about what you feed it

Jordan thank you for talking openly about this subject. I just went through this "wave" (and usually do this time of year like a lot of people). It did help me to just aggressively embrace it to the point where I was annoyingly telling everyone around me I was going thru seasonal depression. I was miserable to be around but the ones who love you will allow you to move through that feeling. It does come and go and it's something I think we all need to be more comfortable with rather than fight it. Sunshine and nature are slowly bringing me back to myself.

I just went to see the animated movie Flow and it's like the perfect depiction of the wave feeling you were talking about, highly recommend it. I was crying and feeling anxious and uncomfortable for most of the movie, might be the new meds, but after going through all of it, it really just felt like wow that was kind of way more awful than I thought, I thought it was gonna be like a pretty chill kids movie u know, but it was still really beautiful and I'm fine. Everything is fine, whatever you do is fine, it's great just as long as you feel good about it. Just be kind and take of your friends, that's all that matters. Just hang out, with your pets and people you care about who care for you too and it's all gonna be alright, you'll die anyway, there's no reason to worry about it right now, just chill, eat when you can, rest when you can, run around when you can. I'm just talking in circles now - you get it.

I used to do puzzles with my grandma back in the day. I'm glad that puzzles remind me of her. I miss her a lot.
At 34 years old, I too think about the pointlessness of existence. Often. But details hold meaning. Memories hold meaning. We create meaning for ourselves. So simultaneously there is no meaning, yet people and how you interact with the world holds meaning. Its definitely a vicious cycle of thinking, but its reality. We need reality.

People love these videos because they're relatable and are uncomfortable to try and relate to others in their own lives. You don't have to be just funny, and don't think you're value is just that. Kind of gives another point of repeatability and the world a bit less isolated through a screen. Been there rawdogging chronic depression after the house broke, my cope with it is just waiting and finding tidbits joy when I can as I go along. Finding a purpose will helps, but if it's not meaningful then it just end up digging me deeper while I'm chasing an empty goal. Hopefully I can get to the point where you're at unraveling the knots in logic and association that keep me down. Gives me hope that there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for the videos!
Wishing you and Fartoc well! Live your dream and solve those puzzles. Also, *seriously* fucked up the symbol for autism is a series of puzzle pieces considering 'tistics don't fit into a larger puzzle except for a couple of other pieces isn't it?

    Good morning Jordan,
I do not usually comment on YT vids. But I've got to say,
    A. Talking about it out loud helps with the feelings of loneliness and lowers you're anxiety, which is awesome.
Idk if you've talked to therapist about this or not. To me and I'll speak about me, the constant anxiety is by far worse than the depression. But what I found is that maybe depression and anxiety aren't the "diagnosis" but the symptoms sound a great deal like complex-PTSD. Where being alone feels good and hurts at the same time. The manic behavior or what you've described to get away from the anxiety and or depression.
I've been working with a trauma therapist for nearly a year. I was diagnosed with GAD and depression 15 years ago. I thought that I had sorted it all out with my counselor go the tools to cope etc. And it never even dawned on me that the life I grew up in was goddamn nightmare and it has never stopped. Narcassist mom most emotionally abusive person I've ever met.
She would put the behavior of a Vietnam veteran father who was out of his mind on me and my sister when we were little little.
This constant want to play puzzles whether a metaphor or not.
Tons of hobbies to occupy the mind, could be seen as dissociation and the negative coping skill is taking up a hobby that you'd "stay in that moment with the puzzle." because these times when we are obsessing about our feelings or how others feel about us.
I'm not DM going to sit here and tell you you've got something I'm not a doc, I do have a counseling degree but that means very little when it comes to juat being a good person to another who shares some of the same traits that I do. Exhaustion is a symptom of PTSD, catastrophising, the
"I wish I could describe it or someone else could sit in it."
Don't sit in it and deflecting trying to describe it as something else.
I think you're effing hilarious I'm nearly 50 yeses old I've been though some shit I've Meade it through some shit and I'll be though some more shit eventually.
But learning that I've got CPTSD I scored an 89 on the test.
I would absolutley talk to your counselor maybe explore some of those trauma based behaviors.
    You're a great comic,
You're really brave for saying this shit out loud.
    Keep on keeping on Homie.
I'd put a heart emoji here but that's weird to do for a person whom I've not met in real life but I do empathize, give yourself some grace and when you're mean to yourself apologize to yourself and mean it.

The waves analogy is very accurate. It’s helped me cope w my bullshit brain. I’ve always equates depression to swimming and the more I wanna give up and drown somehow I snap out of it and remember that reality isn’t so bad when I can remover it’s actually pretty cool when I can function normally.

Love the thumbnails of these solo pods. 😂 And of course I love the solo pod itself. Jordan, can you talk about PMDD on one of your eps?

Jordan, have you ever travelled outside the US to do comedy? Ive personally never been overseas, but a few years back I was working for a company out of Chattanooga doing long haul trucking. Even though it was a scrappy job, it took me places I'd never been... & made me yearn for more travel. Places like Japan, Europe & S. America are still a pipe dream to me for now. When I see people like you & Ian, it makes me wonder why you're not taking advantage of the international stage. You're that good! Why not do it? Japan has always seemed like a healing space. Experiencing different cultures & places can be healing & put you in a totally different mindset. I dunno, but if I were in your shoes, I'd leave the depression behind in the "states" & try to get a few shows booked across the pond. You probably know other comedians who do that, right? I don't know your situation of course, but I see you talk about depression & think, this lady is in a position where she could act in comedy movies or take herself international. Get out of your comfort zone somehow. Depression is being stagnant in situations that just repeat the insanity of the version of yourself that you constantly live within... that bubble. The US is such a shit-show politically right now anyway. I get depressed just thinking about my tax dollars funneled to crap like genocide & Republican agendas. Blah!

The part about waves makes sense. DMT has also helped this way by pulling the veils back and seeing intense experiences from many angles. Sometimes with the right focus it can give a kick out of intense crushing actively offing yourself depression, which if self care behaviours can carry you can provide some forward momentum.
