  • I've been growing plants for over twenty years, so you can imagine how many different types of fertilizers I've tried. After years of experimenting, I found the PERFECT granular fertilizer for containers that's really EASY to make! All you need is a granular organic fertilizer (any kind will work), seaweed powder, and calcium bentonite clay. Be sure to use food grade seaweed powder and food grade calcium bentonite clay. Seaweed powder has about 60 trace minerals and nutrients that include nitrogen, potassium, phosphate, and magnesium, all of which are needed for you plants to thrive. I use calcium bentonite clay in my fertilizer because it helps hold nutrients in the soil so that the plants can access it. I add this fertilizer to my containers every two weeks. I just mix it into the top 3-4 inches of the soil and then water thoroughly. I also add bone meal and blood meal once a month to give my plants some extra nutrients.
    Organic granular fertilizer
1/2 cup granular all-purpose organic fertilizer
    3 tablespoons seaweed powder
    2 tablespoons calcium bentonite clay
    For containers use:
    5 gallons = 2 tbsp
    10 gallons = 3 tbsp
    15 gallons = 1/4 cup
    20 gallons = 1/3 cup

Can I use powdered Irish moss for the seaweed?

I’m sorry it’s taken so long to respond. I had to do some research on this because I honestly did not know what Irish Moss was. It another name for red seaweed, which you can definitely use. It has basically the same nutrient content as the kelp that I was using. I’m glad you asked this question because I learned something new. 😊

@@Thrivingplantz it used to be really popular to use Irish Moss in vegan cheesemaking before Kappa Carrageenan became readily available for home cooks.
