    This movie is beautifully done. It is definitely heart breaking and tragic.. But there isn't much of happier ending to expect from this part of history. A lot of women would have intensive emotional respond to this film, story is about what the Japanese solders did in Nanking but focusing on the part where women in Nanking including prostitutes and Catholic students under age 16 became "Comfort Women" for the Japanese Solders... and definitely it was the beginning of "Comfort Women" tragedy...

    "That way he isn't a traditional hero. He doesn't have the personality of a hero. He is a petty man with a sense of humor, but in the end he becomes a respectable hero. There has never been a Chinese movie with this kind of thing."

    Uh... her translation was pretty shitty IMO, even though I do realize it's a very difficult task to convey the little nuances of different languages, but she skipped over way too much what the director Zhang Yimou was saying, mostly his constant praising of Christian Bale.
    Thanks to this shoddy translation job of this interview, Christian Bale had no idea how high a regard his director holds him in. The director Yimou literally gushed over what an exceptional artist and a true professional Bale was throughout the interview, any chance he got, he went back to praising Bale and what an honor it was for him to have worked with Bale, how amazed he was with Bale's performance since this type of unlikely antagonist-turn-hero characters were so rare in Chinese films, he was utterly transfixed with Bale's ability of bringing such a complex character to life.

    • @messer12
      @messer12 6 лет назад +6

      really love your insight. but if he gushed that much, it mag have made bale feel a little awkward. plus like it might be awk for the interviewer. plus we dont know if that sentiment had be spoken of previously. thank you!

    • @firas9102
      @firas9102 5 лет назад +7

      I am pretty sure Christian Bale has an idea of how high a regard his director holds him in if he was the one chosen for this movie and not just that, but having the freedom to express himself, and also help in creating the character that he played. And as I understand the translator was always there on set with them so the director probably said this to him on set already so she just didn't want to repeat what he already said before. But anyway, thanks for the insight.

    She didn't translate everything necessarily. For example, around 23:00, he said, "This perspective is the most interesting aspect, because in the past movies about Nanjing are very large-scaled and rigid, this is a mold that's hard to break out of; I believe this movie is special, it is very personal, sentimental, also poetic, with humor in the first half. So the other day I actually regretted a bit, if I knew Christian could make such a humorous character, I would have made it more humorous."

    The protagonist here looks like a white man but the real main characters are the prostitutes who scarified themselves to save the girls. They also wanted to get out the horror city but eventually did it for the girls, just like the girls went upstairs instead of exposing the prostitutes during the first raid. It is why the movie is named Flowers of War. In Chinese the name is The Thirteen women in Nanjing. It's the story about them. The heroine Yu Mo was a real person. John only helped.

    I saw this movie last night, it reminded me of the many personal stories i have heard here in Vietnam of the US war. A modern well equipped army who looked at the people they were so efficiently murdering as less than human. The only difference is the war technology of the 60s was far more deadly than what Japan used in 1937. US actions here were truly war crimes on a massive scale, resulting in the death of over 3 million Vietnamese all in the defence of a western installed military dictatorship. The Vietnam war should be a national shame for the US. I would be good to see a similar movie made about the US/Vietnam war.

    • @jimmy2k4o
      @jimmy2k4o 4 года назад +1

      jamesdond1 what a disgusting false comparison.
      Would never happen because to call Vietnam war (which included VC torturing American prisoners of war) “the rape of Vietnam” is a insult to america and Nanking.
      When did Americans have contests to see how many civilians they could kill in an hour? When did the USA today newspaper report this contest like a sport?
      When did Americans torture and execute civilians just to amuse themselves.
      Fuck you you anti American know nothing disrespect piece of human garbage
