  • The beginners guide to replacing a Sega Saturn laser pickup. This was my first attempt to replace a dead laser from a Sega Saturn- a V-Saturn specifically. As it turns out, it is a very easy task. I try to point out everything significant to the repair.
    Save yourself some money and just use Aliexpress:
    www.aliexpress...
    Laser model is a JVC Optima6s
    Saturn is a JVC V-Saturn- Model 2, 32-pin cd board.

    Posting a comment here 5 years later. Not sure if you still make videos, but i finally fixed my v saturn. The gear grinding was the laser dying. De soldered the blob, installed, works like a charm. Cant honestly say how happy it makes me to have it fixed and i have you to thank. Great material on this channel, and i cant express how much videos like this keep the community alive...thank you for all you do 👍

      The SegaHolic hi man I recently bought a jvc optima 6s as the laser in mine is dying, the replacement laser moves but disc isn’t spinning and it’s definitely the laser because I tried the old laser again and managed to get the disc to read. What could be wrong with the new laser? Or is it just faulty. Assembly is an ENR 007

    The jpn saturn i had, took apart put back and couldnt get going again. no idea what happened. last time i do a full strip. But i find that for the 2nd time a new laser in a white saturn worked right away. For the price of £7 it saves the agro of pot fiddling. and you know it should last a bit longer than the old one.great videos. The aussie guy is good too but you bring some nasty-ass saturns back to life.

      @@The_SegaHolic global garage. May have scratched it badly cleaning it. i got it working occasionally. I think i may pick up a few more junk ones from japan. Seems like the laser is the most common fault. Nice to bring them back to life. I like the simplicity of model2's. Easy to whiten too. Do the grey saturns all use optima6 jvc too? And Do you know if the neo cd or dc has cheap new lasers? Cant see much on ebay.

      @@kevinyoung7294 If you're using cotton swabs. it shouldn't have been that caked with dirt to scratch it. Yup, like I said a ton of times, it's mostly the laser. Super cheap from Alipress, so just buy a bunch of them. The supply is running low too, because there used to be a lot more sellers on Aliexpress selling the Optima 6s. Yes, the grey ones also. The only one that doesn't use it is the Philippine manufactured ones... the so called "Sanyo Saturn."

      The neo cd I know nothing about. The DC has a laser that the aftermarket ones, don't work well for. Tried a bunch of them, and you always have to do some major adjusting to the adjustable resistor. Youre better off just buying a used working DC when you see them cheap. Stock up on the DC, as again, replacing lasers on those are almost always a miss.
      Get those junk saturns too... as you see in my vids. You'll be surprised how much of them are actually working. For me, about 80% of "junk" systems I bought on Yahoo Japan Auctions come out working, or just a simple lens clean.

      Yeah i picked up an n64 untested for £1 that works, an 'untested' junk saturn for 9p. if i cant see a working photo i dont go too high as you have to assume they know its broken. Sadly its like 1000-1500¥ for them to ship to buyee. Any good aliexpress users? All i can see is $20+ which is double than ebay?

      Depends on which version. The later model 1's were like the model 2's. The early ones are definitely more work as everything is more packed in... definitely. Nice vid. I have a model one v-saturn that makes a grinding/clicking sound once it heats up...I'm thinking the laser assembly is pushing the gears hard, almost like a stripping sound. Fortunately the gear are all intact...any idea how to fix that?

    • @The_SegaHolic
      @The_SegaHolic  5 лет назад

      Thanks, this was my very first video. The noise may be because something is wrong with the switch that gets triggered when the laser pickup is all the way toward the spindle. You'll see a lever on the PCB near the spindle. Basically, the lever is there to tell the pickup when to stop, otherwise it'll keep pushing on the spindle.
      If that is ok, then I would just take apart the gears, which is pretty easy to do and should be in one of my saturn videos. Clean the gears and relubricate them with silicon grease.
      If the problem is still not fixed, then, well, I wouldn't know anything further...

      @@The_SegaHolic ok sweet, ill take a look in a few days and see. I didnt realized there was a lever used for that...ill definitely repost once I figure it out. Hopefully its not snapped or something. I mainly notice it when super street fighter 2 x is running simply because the laser moves a bunch in between stages...otherwise it only happens usually on boot up when the systems warmed up.

    • @joshbechaistron791
      @joshbechaistron791 5 лет назад

      @@The_SegaHolic ok so an update. I noticed a few things: my power supply cord that came with the v saturn is rated at 250v...not the usual 125v...so I switched out to a standard cord (PlayStation style) and it seemed to abate the grinding noise for a little longer, but that could be my imagination. Also for the sake of comparison, I took apart my model 2 US saturn alongside my mod 1 v saturn to take a look at the lever you were talking about...the US saturn has a white lever to stop the laser, where as the v saturn has what looks like some sort of plug type translucent thing that moves slightly when the laser hits against it but it still seems to act as a lever, kind of strange lol. The last thing I noticed was while running super street fighter 2x like before, my v saturn not only makes the click noise but the music doesnt sync up right during the load screens...I thought this was the game but my US saturn syncs them perfectly. Could this mean my laser is dying, maybe needs adjusting? Power issue? I know that was long winded lol. On a side note ill be taking the gears apart once I get silicone grease btw. Thanks for any advice good sir.

    • @The_SegaHolic
      @The_SegaHolic  5 лет назад

      @@joshbechaistron791 Hard to give you more advice without looking at it. New laser pickups are pretty cheap. $10-12 shipped. You could try that first. If the problems persist, then the laser board assembly has been adjusted, and it will be hard to get it back calibrated correctly without a o-scope and proper instructions. BTW, check aliexpress for JVC Optima 6s if you want to replace the laser. I have instructions on the channel. Just search for the video. Easy to replace.

    • @joshbechaistron791
      @joshbechaistron791 5 лет назад

      @@The_SegaHolic When you say the laser board assembly may have been adjusted, do you mean the potentiometer or something else? And yeah I checked out your other saturn vids. My v saturn is an rg-jx1(x) so as long as the optima 6s is the one ill look into them. Also, I'm not a confident solder guy, so is there any way to buy the laser pickups with the solder blob removed already on the back of the pickup?

I have bought for personal use, and I have sold on eBay as the price hike on eBay is a rip off. I have not have any of the lasers fail, or been notified that any of the laser failed from the ones I sold. And that's over 30 lasers that I have bought! @@sebastiann.8088 Like Nights1980 said, it's very easy. Dude, to take of the solder blob, just have your iron hot enough to melt the solder. Get a temp adjustable one from Amazon. The cheap stuff is pretty good nowadays, where the adjustment is on the iron itself. Should be no more than $10. Set your temp to 380F and once it melts, swipe away toward the edge of the PCB. Clean your tip, and swipe away any solder that might still be bridging the two points where the solder was. Give it a try.
