A funny thing to me about all this, is my initial reaction when I found Terraria in the PSN shop all those years ago was to note that the default character looked like Bartz from Final Fantasy 5, this grabbed my attention enough that I got the demo and then bought the full game shortly after. Was one of my favorite games ever since.
Nice to see a fellow FF5 fan, had to scroll too far down haha. I also always thought the resemblance was uncanny, and about a year ago, I learned about the placeholder sprites. Was mind-blowing (and a bit vindicating) to know that two of my favourite games were connected like this.
7:24 You may be used to the blue numbers meaning mana, but in the game's early history, health healing numbers were blue, and mana was purple. I'm fairly sure this remained until about 1.0.6 . You can verify this by pausing the footage when an enemy dies and find that they're dropping hearts, and your health does in fact increase by 20.
You’re right, but I’ve been playing the beta for myself and it’s true that it can try to restore your mana, the first slime I killed gave me a purple 20 that didn’t increase my health.
This is such a throwback man. I remember playing terraria the first week it came out, my brother had bought it and let me play it and I instantly fell In love with it. It’s so amazing to see how far the game has come
Man, it feels weird that Minecraft is older than Terraria, but Terraria already had their last update...man my life isnt complete without Terraria. Minecraft is good but c'mon really?
Same. Completly different vibe than the new version. I used to play terraria back in 2014... i think. Me and my friend died at the generic worm in the caverns. Looking back its so funny. Instead of bulding a house, we just dug into the ground right beneath the spawn point. And we had this theory that the wkrm that killed us was "the guardian of the life crystal" because the life crystal was around and we died instantly bevause we were so young and n00b. Lol.
So having just played through the beta, you missed a lot of stuff. You can in fact craft mana crystals, and there are demon altars (I found two in my second world). You can also summon the Eye of Cthulhu and Eater of Worlds by crafting their summoning items there. The dungeon is complete. The Goblin Army is also complete, beta sprites and all. Smashing Shadow Orbs doesn't spawn in the Eater, and the only events that occur naturally are the blood moon and goblin invasion. You also didn't show the underground jungle, which is also in the game. Farming enemies there will net you the Ivy whip, Blade of Grass and Thorn Chakram. If you want to beat Skeletron in this version, try the Flamarang (weaker) or Thorn Chakram (stronger). Having a brief look through the game files, there's not a Hellforge yet. You might also want to try crafting the Necro armor; it has a cool beta sprite. The Dryad will also move in once you beat a boss, sometimes more than once. I think this deserves another playthrough.
I've been playing for 8 years now and the game doesn't get boring for me, mainly because of mods but even in vanilla, there's SO much to do, one of the best games of all time
God I wish I could discover Terraria again. I remember I started in 1.2.4, being really confused about what to do. Naturally, I decided to explore, that is, until I saw that the grass was red where I was heading. Thinking it was a new area, I thought to myself that I shouldn't proceed further. Not a second passed after that thought, and I heard a scream, I was terrified and ran away, but not before seeing what it was from, a Face Monster. Running as fast as I could, I scrambled to block the way so it wouldn't catch up to me, and blocked the entrance of a cliff with wooden blocks. I was hoping the monster would just go away because I was out of reach, and I thought it did when it turned back, so I broke the messy barricade I made, only to be surprised by the monster coming back. Panicking, I tried to block the way again, but ended up blocking myself, when the Face Monster reached me, I didn't even try to fight back, I lost all composure, and the Face Monster signed what I think was my first ever death in Terraria. After that, I struggled to kill it with my Copper Shortsword and a couple of Shurikens I think? I can't remember exactly, but I know that I didn't touch Terraria for a few days after that, until a friend created a world so we could play the game together. Now I have more than 2000 hours of total gametime, finished a couple of worlds alongside friends, but we have yet to finish one since Journey's End's release, and I STILL haven't finished a world by my own self...
I still remember how I launched Terraria for the first time in 2014. It was a beginning of something really beautiful that I enjoy even in these horrible days. I just simply can't forget my first world where I built houses that looked like a German bunker. The feel of a new undiscovered game was also there and I enjoyed progressing through unknown world towards hardmode which I didn't even know that it existed. It just feels so nice to have a look back at the good ol' days. Thank you for this video, Chippy.

I wasn't subscribed a week ago when this was released so it took me a little while to find it through my recommended. I'm so happy someone finally did a video on the Beta. I remember briefly playing either the Beta or Alpha (honestly can't remember) before buying the game, like, 9 years ago. Also glad that you mentioned the FF5 sprites because they're one of my favourite parts of this version and I don't think anyone on RUclips has really talked about them. I honestly wasn't huge on your content many years back when I first saw it, but I definitely dropped a sub for this one.
People always make fun of Scratch, but any game that's a so-called 'ripoff' is just a little kid, maybe 7 - 9, making a little fan game for completely free for other people who enjoy the game. Still pisses me off that one of my Cuphead projects I made in year 4 was called shit by some grown man who's acting like some 40 year old is making $1,000 a day from my little project I made for fun. In a RUclips video with like over 500,000 views.
The reason skeletron is so strong is because they used his head for the guardian. If you look at the moment you got killed by the guardian, it has the name and health of skeletron
Dude this brings back memories. No good memories, but memories. I know why I quit back then but I remember seeing a lot of what you've shown. Never got to hell tho and ofc seeing the guardian for the first time I entered the dungeon was super weird. I stuck with minecraft at that time and only recently picked up terraria again. This game is something else and exploring it now vs back when it came out is a night and day difference. I have so much fun now and it's a completely different game. I had no idea about this games' history until many years after the fact. Chippy, I think I found and subbed to you like 5 or 6 years ago and you're an amazing Terraria resource. I look forward to one day earning your couch.
Wow, that merchant is straight-up Galuf from Final Fantasy 5 haha. It's a good thing they changed it. Square Enix would have gone lawsuit crazy had they seen that lol.
What I want in the last update (hoping there will be another one) is that there is an option to play all fo the old versions of Terraria kinda like Minecraft!!
Technically, it should be possible to kill skeletron. The minishark has a use speed of 8, so and as such shoots at 450 rpm. a night in terraria lasts for 9 minutes, so 9*450=4050 shots per night. It can be seen in the video that skeletron has 3000 hp, so even if you missed 1/4 of your shots you should be able to defeat him.
The only problem is he would have to stop to fight zombies since they would come in and interrupt the fight. but even then, I still believe he could have tried and still won against skeletron
When I started playing the strongest weapon was Sunfury, and that only dropped from bone serpents in hell. And I think the best armour in the game was the molten set. So I think the original desktop release.
I've been subbed for a while now, and I just want to say that I am a huge fan of your content. even though I haven't been playing very long or anything, I've always stuck around to watch your legendary map playthroughs and news uploads. Keep being legendary, and I know you'll hit 1 mil soon! - a grateful fan
It is wild to look back on betas, this became 1.4, like imagine the old Terraria devs seeing the Queen Slime Fight we have now, stuff is just crazy, gotta long betas, stuff is so fun.
As someone who is a big final fantasy nerd these old sprites I can see how they were inspired or placeholders from final fantasy it’s really really cool and the galuf merchant is cool
If anyone wants to try like 75% of this just find the release version of Terraria. Almost all of this stuff is there and was for like the firs year of the game's life until hard mode gets added. Meteorite and demonite could be destroyed by TNT, not bombs.
OHHH MEMORIES! This bribgs me back to when my cousin let me play the beta for 10 mins. Then 10 years later, I bought the game for myself and I'm enjoying it hard. Thanks cousin Leon! :D
2012 was amazing i remember buying terraria in a sale and played all year. When I saw chippy's channel I re-bought it, when I played it again nostalgia was the only emotion I felt. So much has changed. :)
I remember the first time I played Terraria. Me, my brother, and my cousin were playing it for probably 10-11 hours straight and didn’t realize it, and I can still remember vary vividly how hard it use to be to build underwater, because we decided that we wanted to build Atlantis, and try to get the hollowed armor, because at that time it was the best armor in the game, I think it was 2012, Or late 2011 when we started playing it, I just can’t believe that it’s been 10 years since it came out, and a great game and I can’t wait to see if they happen to have any more surprises even though journeys and already released
I actually started terraria may 2011 in alpha and i LOVED terraria and now i still play it and compete professionally. And with minecraft i compete professionally and ive been playing since minecraft alpha. 2 games that i loved and still love today.

It can be seen in the video that skeletron has 3000 hp, so even if you missed 1/4 of your shots you should be able to defeat him.
The only problem is he would have to stop to fight zombies since they would come in and interrupt the fight. but even then, I still believe he could have tried and still won against skeletron
If you took a shot every time Chippy said "Terraria" I don't think you'd survive the experience.
And that day, a legend was born...
This feels so nostalgic even though I have never played this game before 1.2 I started when 1.2 was out
I'm so glad I grew up with this: Terraria 1.0
But damn, this is better: Terraria 1.4.1
James: No terraria youtuber has ever reached 1 million subscribers
Wand of Sparking: X doubt
James: Arms Dealer
Subtitles: Arm Stealer
8:26 “my first skeleun”
ultimate British I guess
Finding a mushroom biome normally: *Cool, refreshing, interesting, fun!*
Finding a mushroom biome in ftw: “Ugh, not another one. Ah well, free loot.”
Get this man 1 million subs
I forgot the max stack used to be 250, that was a pain. I also didn't know coins stacked so I had chests upon chests full of copper coins
"well I guess I'm Andrew now" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I was one of the original beta testers. Most of us were a bunch of kids recruited from Red’s other game, SMBX.
It looks sooo different! It makes me feel nostalgic for something i didn't experience..
At this point I wouldn’t be surprised to see that Chippy has the files for Otherworld
The sprites look like they are from final fantasy
yeah they actually got in trouble for that, i think chippy already made a video about it
It is wild to look back on betas, this became 1.4, like imagine the old Terraria devs seeing the Queen Slime Fight we have now, stuff is just crazy, gotta long betas, stuff is so fun.
they should add a special grappling hook that has the damage feature.
The damage hook

As someone who is a big final fantasy nerd these old sprites I can see how they were inspired or placeholders from final fantasy it’s really really cool and the galuf merchant is cool
Damn I was only 5 years old when they began development
EDIT: *i was actually 4 years old I'm just stupid*
I was not even born at that point
Im six yrs old when they began damn..
I was 3 when it happened
I was 4
bosses then: fffff i scary eye!! i spawn tiny eye!!!!
bosses now: man this bitch impure (starts chucking LSD)
Dude you just brought back soo many memories
8:38 The paulstretched skeleton death noise had me dying of laughter.
The sprites were based off of Bartz from ff5. Although the merchant is Galuf. The nurse might be Faris.
If anyone wants to try like 75% of this just find the release version of Terraria. Almost all of this stuff is there and was for like the firs year of the game's life until hard mode gets added. Meteorite and demonite could be destroyed by TNT, not bombs.
Just found this channel from 1.4 tips and tricks. Good stuff bro
been playing for 8 years and some of your videos are trips down memory lane
OHHH MEMORIES! This bribgs me back to when my cousin let me play the beta for 10 mins. Then 10 years later, I bought the game for myself and I'm enjoying it hard. Thanks cousin Leon! :D
chippy i remember from the meme review wat u say but ur hair and ima keep doin it til u get one million subs :D
hearing chippy pronounce tuhrawria correctly is weird
2012 was amazing i remember buying terraria in a sale and played all year. When I saw chippy's channel I re-bought it, when I played it again nostalgia was the only emotion I felt.
So much has changed. :)
I can’t believe it’s been 10 whole years it feels like yesterday when I found a random game and fell in love with it forever
Holy crap you're 23? I was 21 when this game came out lol. Man I feel old
How to anger terraria players: pronounce it ter-er-ia
It’s fun to see all the things that are present now we’re in the beta to begin with
I remember the first time I played Terraria.
The caves looking mostly the same as they did in beta reminds me of Minecraft prior to the latest update.
This is a video I just keep coming back to. I love it
I actually started terraria may 2011 in alpha and i LOVED terraria and now i still play it and compete professionally. And with minecraft i compete professionally and ive been playing since minecraft alpha. 2 games that i loved and still love today.
