Thanks so much for this great vid. I am retiring this winter and moving to New Mexico to fulfill my dream of being a trout bum. Can't wait to fish the San Juan. Thanks.
Great video. I had the pleasure of living in Farmington for 10 years and fished the river 3xs a week. I was also lucky enough to fish with Chuck Rizzutto a few times.
Yep....this is one of the few good things the scummy government has for us in New Mexico!! Keeping stricts laws about size and keeper numbers has produced monsters and world class fishing. You'd have to go to Patagonia Chile to try and find better trout fishing.
Get a net. They are beating up the fish by overnighting them and beating them up in the rocks in the shallows. Then you should not be moving the fish back and forth in shallow water. Just hold them in a little current. Just because you can catch them doesn't mean you know how to handle them.
We've learned alot since this video was shot. Now just about all fly fisherman on the Juan use nets and handle the fish as little as possible. Play the fish as little as possible and that is due to the quality of the equipment. It's an always evolving sport!
Quality waters are barbless hooks only. Anything from Crusher hole up to the dam is quality waters (almost everybody at this point is fly fishing but you find the occasional spinner fisherman). Everything below crusher normal fishing.
First of all never handle a trout by the jaw! That first fish had a busted jaw.. Many of the trout on the Juan have busted jaws because people don't know how to handle them....
This is an awesome video! Edited and Narrated so well! I love vintage video like this! It's like a treasure just to watch and learn from!

This video was actually shot in 1992. Sadly, both Leon Chandler and Dave Cohen have passed on.
When do the fish span? October? Would love to go while they are spawning.
When was this video actually shot. I know Leon has passed away some years back.
Len Sherlinski 1984 I believe
Are you just allowed to fly fish in the river or can you throw lures?
Barbless hooks only type of rod not important when we were there please check the rules before you fish.

BTK Fuckin Texans
Brown trout aren't native species and the Rainbows seem like hatchery fish. Best in the world?
Avg twenty inch rainbow is three pounds idk about 3 1/2 4 pounds
Fishing spawning fish is not cool at all.
stick to basscar and bass fishing ...
That is why we had the biggest legend in fly fishing Leon Chandler on the show and sent Pat fishing off camera
