The Curious Case of William Byron

- William Byron is a curious case study in NASCAR. His immense success in the lower divisions of NASCAR like the K&N Series, Truck Series, and Xfinity Series coupled with his background in iRacing has really made him a well known and interesting figure. Today I look into his career to see how he got to this point.

And at homestead
I know William doesn’t have a Cup win, but he won Ryan Blaney’s sister... lol 😂
Edit: Oh... well now he won Daytona...

The News what does he have to do with Newman Suarez and Dillon?
The News WOAH... Mind blown! 🤯 😂
LMAO!!!!! THAT'S SO TRUE
Why couldn't you deliver the punchline Denny
Who's here after his first win
Me, though imagine the reactions if Elliott disregarded team orders and made that heel turn against Byron 😂
Hahaha
Yesssir
Jackie Tang but he had no run to get to Byron
Byron eked out a win to secure a Playoff spot...
Otherwise, he might’ve been considered just another Hendrick “youth movement” bust and possibly shuffled out of his ride...
**** CORRECTION *****
(Willy B. was right above the cutoff line coming into Daytona. He had to keep above the cutoff line with a higher points finish than teammate Jimmy Johnson to secure the Playoff spot...but the WIN definitely secured him the spot.)
His racing career started on a computer!
My racing career is on the computer! Where’s my legend car?
Well, it is sponsored by John Cena, so you can't see it, but it is there
I like Donuts ahaaaa
It's sitting on racing junk's classified section waiting for you to cough up the 6k for it and then spend another 600 to go get it
I swear on everything, this is as relatable as it gets.
I haven't got one for you yet, except a RickWare Racing car, sorry bud
Is it WERiD that this came up in my recommended right after his first win in the Coke 400
This was posted 2 days before his first win
I personally think Byron is an underrated driver. I’ve never viewed him as a top 10 driver, but he’s only 22 and he’s driving the worst car at Hendrick (remember how bad Kahne did in that car?) while still going to college so he’s not going to develop as quickly as he can. There’s also no practice or qualifying this year, so that’s already a disadvantage compared to drivers who have more experience, so I attribute that to his decline this year. Comparing him to drivers such as chase Elliot or Ryan Blaney who came in the series a couple years before him isn’t fare to him, as he still has 2-3 years to develop into the drivers they both are now. He’s younger than drivers like Reddick, Bell, Briscoe, and JH Nemechek. As much as he hasn’t won in 3 years, he was rushed up to cup with basically all of Hendrick retiring. He’s not performed great, but I see the potential for him to be great
Honestly, even though he got a ton of talent, he should've at least raced the 2018 season in the XFinity series with a few selected cup starts
Finally, some people understand!!
God damn THANK YOU!!!
^^^^
with the plan hendrick had with bringing chase to the 9 in cup, Byron had no choice but to go to the 24
Byron: Gets in the playoffs
Engine: Ight imma head out
@Allen Nguyen ok nerd
Byron only had one year in Xfinity... I think he needed at least a year more...
@TOPFUEL 173 If that was a rule then a lot of people in Cup would have to make a year in Xfinity.
I think changing teams can help young drivers a lot like Reddick did
@@crazybut6641 Reddick has been with RCR his entire career. He ran the 2 in Xfinity which is owned by RCR.
@JJ48 Forever he won the championship for JRM in the 9 before racing for RCR
I thought he was rushed up way too fast
I think Dover is a great example that the car is whats holding him back. On Saturday he was horrible and with a few changes he then ran top 5 the next day. Its not like he learned how to drive overnight.
yep, he has the old 5 team that kahne, an established veteran, struggled in. Put chase in that car and he may do slightly better, but he would 100% be winless right now
Well that escalated quickly...
I think Byron's wins will come in due time. He always impressed me by his ability to adapt quickly in any series, but when the Cup Series aero package changes every year, it's hard to find consistency, and the cars will change again in 2021 (likely) and 2022.
If he can get comfortable with the current cars, then you'll probably see him win 2-3 races a year.
This comment aged well! Lol

Finally did it but at the cost and pain of Jimmie Johnson fans
There’s two
he's definetly gonna do well in 2022 i bet
YES HE WON HIS FIRST CUP SERIES WIN WAS TODAY
SATURDAY,AUGUST,29,2020
AT THE DAYTONA SPEEDWAY
AT THE AGE OF 22
CONGRATS TO HIM
Well this was good timing lol
How has his career been? Amazing so far. He's in the most recognizable car from the 90s and 00s and is consistently a playoff driver while being barely old enough to drink.
And it got better.

I like how people say Byron sucks but he has been ahead of Johnson every year in point.
Jimmie is in his 40s after winning 7 Championship and completely dominating 06-2013. Chase and Alex have won faster than he has in good Cup equipment and even Blaney in mid pack equipment he's around the top 5 sometimes and leads sometimes but when could you really say man Byron should have won that race. He doesn't suck but he's a top 10 driver not a winning on the regular driver. It's easy to look like the next big thing when you drive for the literal best teams in Trucks and Xfinity and win alot with them, there's a reason they had Chad be his Crew Chief it wasn't because they thought Jimmie wasn't doing good they knew Jimmie was on his way out and Byron wasn't performing good enough so they thought Chad could get him some Ws with his Crew Chief talent.
I think no qualifying/practice has hurt him. When he was able to do that last year, there was a massive uptick in his performance.
Given the luck you gave William, Two days before the next race, can you do a Matt DiBenedetto video?
I'm excited to see Byron on the podcast tonight and I wish him the best of luck this weekend
You gave him luck
@@isaiahdarkbreath2037 Ain't that the truth
watching this three years later.... he's come a long way
Well I’m here after he scored win number 1.
Let's just not forget that Truex really wasn't much to write home to Mama about for most of his career, until about the last 5 or 6 years. Now look at him, granted he wasn't always on the best equipment. Joey Logano wasn't that good his first four years, now look at him. I'm not saying he will ever set the world in fire but you just never know. There's more than just a drivers talent that comes into play, theres cars, the pit crew, the crew chief, and a little luck here and there and if it all comes together and you get some momentum, who knows what might happen.
I hope he is not given up on by big teams at least for a few more years as he has a lot of potential
I know it sounds stupid but i think there's a bit more added pressure on him by driving that 24. I've been a Gordon fan all my life and it's one of the most recognized numbers in Nascar. Chase had trouble winning in that car and since he moved to the 9 he's put on 8 wins since. But superstitions aside, Byron is a hell of a driver and has a lot of potential but he's still young and just needs time. He's in the field with guys who have been doing this for decades whereas he came from a game and got rushed up after having success in lower series. He'll get there. Also doesn't help that Chevrolet isn't exactly lighting up the field right now with the exception of Chase Elliott mainly.
Don’t forget he’s in the 5 car equipment
Well congrats on the win for Byron!
Welp, is he a curious case now?
He now won, the 24 is back in victory lane!
1,763 days winless streak broken

Can you do What if Dodge never left NASCAR?
Who's here after he scored his first Cup win?
POV: Ur watching this after he wins his first race
He needs to run some Xfinity and/or truck races
This guy is a real head scratcher at times.
I love coming back to this video 🤣
This was awesome timing! Great to see William win!
What should have happened: Byron stays in the 9 in Xfinity in 2018. Matt Kenseth takes over the 5 at HMS, 24 is retired. In 2019, Kenseth retires, and Byron moves into the 5 car as a rookie, potentially as a 2-time Xfinity champion. Knaus is moved to 5, & now Byron has a much better start to his Cup career
I know it’s been a year, but here would be a better option: Just pair him up with Rudy Fugle in 2018.
What surprises me the most is he never has run a lower series race since going to cup. All these young cup guys really never run lower series races and I don’t understand why.
They can only do so much, but in the case of Bryon, just for the sake of track time, he really needs a few starts in the JRM 8 and GMS 24 this year.
i’m here after he just won daytona!!!
Definitely a fast rising star. Disappointing that his Cup season isn't going better especially with Chad on the box. They were pretty fast to start the season then after the "break" they have fallen off. Hopefully they will make the playoffs, I am confident they can. Hope that first win is coming soon.
Correct!

Two wins so far
I stopped watching NASCAR until this year after my favorite driver, Jeff Gordon, retired (along with Dale Jr.). I like JJ and the 48 team as well, but his lackluster performances have also kept me away. Out of curiosity I tuned into the Daytona Road Course race recently and saw my favorite car doing fairly well. I did some research and liked what I found out. Now I"m back as a NASCAR fan, and happily rooting for the 24 again.
To me, the 24 car will always belong to Gordon; but I have to say, Byron is a worthy successor to "the Kid" with some real potential (he kind of reminds me how Jeff was back when he first started in the Cup series in the 90s). I can't wait to see where he goes from here; he definitely has talent and is bound to not only score some wins, but even a championship or two down the road!
His paint scheme with the blue and the orange fire remind me so much of Jeff Gordon
I like how he actually won after this video, thanks for jinxing it!
See, Byron should've went to the 9 car when he got to cup...he raced the 9 every season in the lower divisions and it would've been perfect to give him
But I guess everything has to go to the golden boy
True
Chase is still technically driving the 24 car so he’s still driving Gordon’s car and Byrons driving kasey Kane’s car
@@khrysmartinez6967 I know but I'm saying Byron should've got the 9 car *number*, not the *team*
What 😂😂😂
Yeah, i wish Byron got the 9 instead of Elliott in 2018, Chase Elliott deserved the job to carry on the 24’s legacy
Byron should had one more year in xfinity before moving him up to cup imp.
@@keeganracer8300 Custer and Reddick...? His stats are almost the same as those guys... he has more top 10s than either of them.
@@keeganracer8300 So they're all at the same level, Byron's the same age, and he's made a lot more money by spending two years more in cup? What's the advantage? They're at the exact same place. Lmao.

I thought you posted the video following his win, not two days prior. That’s crazy.
Well, Willy B is here now.
I like how a few days after you upload this he wins...
I don’t think he’s tapered off at all. 3 wrecks and 9 blown tires/ loose wheels don’t tell the tale of how good this season should be. I can count on one hand how many “bad” races he’s had this season in terms of pure performance. This year, luck has a lot to do with how his stats look.
Edit: I have to add that’s 12 potential top 10’s because every incident was out of his control while running inside the top 10 for all of them. This is the stats that only looking at final results won’t tell you.
^^^^^^^^
Definitely agree, since NASCAR came back in May, Byron has had so many tire issues while running well which spoil his good runs, especially Indy where he blew a tire while leading. I think he would be quite a bit higher up in the points without those tire issues.
CXY888 and that’s not even including the team not tightening 3/5 lugs on one wheel at Darlington. Again at Charlotte. Running P7 at Texas and getting caught in 2 wrecks. Being wrecked at Daytona while running P4. Wrecked at Las Vegas while running P3. There’s just so many good finishes left off the table by this team And very few are because of William
Yeah I don’t get why everyone has just pushed aside the bad luck he’s had this year? Dover was literally his only bad run that he didn’t have anything go wrong and people were coming for his head. He could easily have 12-13 tops 10s on the year and 2 or 3 more top 5s if things didn’t go wrong. Sometimes you have to look deeper than just stats. His performance imo has been better this year than last, the results just don’t show it
Kirk Loftin 100% agree. Honestly he should be at about 15 top 10’s this season easily and top 10 in the overall points but things completely out of his control ruin the overall results stats. Possibly even a win because he was pretty dominate at Indianapolis. And like you said, everyone pushes that to the side. I’m personally pumped to see the step forward. And when they start getting some luck like Dover 2 on a consistent basis then look out Cup Series. Him and Chad are gonna go on a roll. Big time.
That timing, wow!!!
Watching this now
He has arrived
Just watched this after William Byron won in Daytona. He's a wheelman and is gonna be a champion someday
Every time this guy makes a video about someone not winning races they do so immediately 😂 love the vids tho
love the music
Another point of consideration: in a season with no practice, it's to be expected that the long time veterans of the sport (except KB lol) will do better due to their experience
And Truex in the sense that he can’t get the extra position for the win
As you said, he is young, and he will only get better!
First to say he won finally!
Really like Willy b and want to see make the playoffs and win this Saturday for sure 😁

Byron is a good (not great, good) plate racer but has had bad luck
Time to update this video @TheIceberg
Winner!
Dude should be way higher in points, I think 5 times this season he’s had a top 10 run taken away because of tire issues
I think with the lack of practice it really affected William Byron, remember he's only in his jr year he doesn't have that much experience, I don't think its pressure of riding the 24 or on a computer and I really don't believe it's because he got rushed up he's got chad and in 2019 was a step up, but it also affected Chad as he never been in this position and only two years with Byron, what really pisses me off is that people are saying Byron was not ready for Cup even when knowing the cars are too aero sensitive and obviously different from trucks and Xfinity which suppose to be a series with training wheels for the Cup, not like what we have right now with every car looking different.
And plus the #24 car he's driving is basically just a renumbered #5 car which is still the worst of the bunch in Hendrick.
He won his first race in his 98th race. Pn perspective, that is one race quicker than Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson.
Byron started off at Hendrick with the 5 crew. It was by far the worst of the hendrick teams, so there was no surprise, at least in my mind that he was going to have a difficult time making any real progress unless massive changes were made. He also joined when Chevy was struggling to keep up with Toyota/Ford and the results showed. Week after week, despite the fact that most cars in the field were chevy, they were almost always beat by toyota/fords.
As for William Byron today? He's struggling to make the top 16. He is absolutely struggling right now but he has Chad Knaus on his team. They're both feeling the pressure to improve and I think this struggle is going to help them in the long run. I'm not sure we'll see him winning any time soon, but give him a few more years, and I think he'll but up near the front more often.
And now Byron is a winner!
With the better Camaro body this year I think his performance and Hendrick as a whole has stepped up quite a bit. If you remember how Joey Logano's career started, I think it could be the same with Byron especially since he is having a much better season so far.
Will I'd say Willie B stepped up in time :-D
My favourite driver
I think it’s gonna take a while for William to win, and when he does he’ll only win every so often. I don’t see him as championship worthy, but I certainly see him as a guy who could somewhat compete for titles

I respect the fuel background music
Byron is a great driver to be in the 24 car !!!!
Perfect timing. Byron just won the Coke Zero 400.
Well I think he got a win now
He got rushed up
And Erik Jones too.
What would an extra year have done...? Would have been a waste.
@@ericmarchesini4883 At least Erik won races unlike Byron
At least Byron is mostly consistent.
Tylnorton It took 3 years for Jones to score his first win. Also Byron has finished consistently ahead of Jones in the point standings for his short career so far. Give Byron a bit more time and experience and he’ll be a top 10 driver
And he won at Daytona
You forgot another explanation for his struggles: he's up against the best of the best now. The guys he's lining up next to have the same natural talent, but with more experience as you mentioned.
