      I got one question for all of you! Do you or have you owned any real gear? Meaning Technics, vestax, pioneer, reloop, audio tech or mixar turntables? Have you tested any of these products in a intense environment? I have! Not only have I demo and used every brand of turntable I also own over 6 pair and if anyone is looking for a home player not for scratching and cutting I would go with the plx 500 it has all the features high torque direct drive, USB with removable rca and ground solid build +8 pitch for $299

  • @bobroth1951

    You forgot to mention that the Audio-techica pl-120 plays not only 45 and 33 rpm records, but also plays 78 rpm records. Most other players do not have the 78 rpm option. I have owned this player for almost 8 years and have never had a problem. I have played thousands of 78 and 45 rpm records on this player. A great record player!

    • @bobroth1951
      @bobroth1951 7 лет назад +2

      As I said, I have played thousands of 78rpm records over the last 8 years on this turntable-OF COURSE I KNOW WHICH STYLUS TO USE. I bought the entire set of stylus from Rek-o-cut (about $600). Heck, the 6 needles cost me twice the price of the record player!! But well worth the cost for sure!!!

      Most home theater receivers today aren't equipped with a phono input. This is why modern turntables have built in pre-amps.

    • @robsemail
      @robsemail 4 года назад

      Jonathan Welch true, but at the budget end, in my opinion, the built-in preamp should be avoided. I skipped the Audio Technica LP-120 and went straight to the next step up Audio Technica’s line, the LP-140, in part because it does not include a built-in preamp (the dampened platter alone makes the 140 a better value, in my opinion). The budget, internal preamps do not produce the best sound, and the presence of a cheap preamp affects the turntable’s output, on both preamped and phono-out signals.
      When you move up the line to the higher end turntables, like the Audio Technica LP-1240USB, the preamps are better in quality, and don’t seem to negatively affect the non-preamped output.

    Correction. A CD has twice the dynamic range of an LP.
    I have this turntable, only the all-black version. The connectors plug into the rear of the turntable. They’re not hardwired. Perhaps mine is a later, updated version. It’s an excellent turntable.

  • @nerdglider
    @nerdglider 7 лет назад +20

    I really don't listen to vinyl for quality its more of an experience like going to the movies instead of watching it at home. You can surely argue that an oled 4k panel has more dynamic range and is more color accurate than a movie projector and that a 5.1 system has more sound separation in a small room than the bass focused speaker arrangement in a theater (not to mention its much cheaper) but we still go to theaters because its a experience we can't duplicate

    I have this this turntable but in black, I've had it nearly 2 years now but use a great 70's receiver Pioneer SX550 and hooked it up to my Wharfdale floor standing speakers and It sounds amazing, I did use it with powered speakers the Audio engine 2+ and the built in preamp but I wanted more power and sound but they do make for a good starter if your just getting into vinyl records like I was. I would say for the price this is one of the best record players. Please stay away from crosley.

      For a generation of people of who have gotten bored with Ed Sheeran, Cardi B, Billy Eilish, Sade and Taylor Swift, and have finally found other performers like Dimash, Misia or Sinne Eeg, older better quality music can also be huge revelation. Reaction videos by younger people are hilarious when they finally discover the likes of Sarah Vaughan, the Beatles, Joe Cocker, Aretha Franklin or Ryuichi Sakamoto. If the only way they can find it is on Vinyl, Oh Well, I can't blame them too much for that. Most of it, however, is available on CDs that don't damage when they find themselves playing the same good old song over and over.

    Wow. This was supposed to simply give advise on an entry level turntable but has turned into the old vinyl vs digital debate. For what it's worth, sound is subjective. If you like cds the listen to cds. If the sound for your phone speaker sounds good then listen to that. My choice is vinyl, DVD-a and sacd audio. Mostly vinyl. But that's simply my preference. Best advice? Listen to all formats and chose what you like. Don't let anyone tell you which is best. I have 4 turntables one of which is this audio technica. Great entry turntable. If not better.

  • @billywhite4190
    @billywhite4190 6 лет назад +4

    Really crazy how everyone expresses their opinion about records, compact discs and various turntables. Perhaps there is nothing that is absolutely perfect. You big audiophiles with lots of money to spend talk about the more expensive and sophisticated turntables. What does it really matter as long as you purchase what you can afford and you're happy with it? I have an AT-LP120 with a Shure M44-G cartridge and while it may not be the very best, I am happy with it is about all I can afford and I'm very happy with this setup. You can chew on that all you want to and it won't hurt my feelings. Does anybody want to argue about that?

      This community is one of the most gatekeep-y and pretentious communities i've ever tried to navigate. I suspect it's because a large portion of it is comprised of a territorial old crowd of people. Those of us not living in suburbia and those who don't have the money to invest $2000 into an audio setup should have a few options that aren't constantly looked down upon. But hey, your audio setup only has to sound good to you. If people don't like it, that's their problem. Glad people are calling this out. Hope your machine is still going strong, man!

    Hi, what do you think about the AT Lp60? I want to get started in Vinyl,but 300$ and + equipment like cleaning and sleeves, + records themself are busting my budget. I read that the Lp60 is a good player and got a 3g force so it doesnt damage my records, atleast my records wont get damaged even if the sound isnt the best. And its cost the 1/3. And in time i can sell it and upgrade it to the 120 or better. What do you think?

I find 2 things, young hipsters who may have only seen a record player for the first time this year or DJ's trying to justify 900 dollar turntables. I just want to play my large passed down collection and maybe digitize or sample them. The Roland TT-99 looks great, if youre really into nostalgia.

    ok, let me give it to you from a guy that grew up with this format. those "short" cables in the back aren't meant to be plugged directly into speakers. they're meant to go into a line input in the back of an amplifier or receiver. speakers are then driven from the amp or receiver. big, kick ass speakers.
    enough with the dorky little hipster setups. grow up and listen the way it was meant to be listened to. take it seriously. do it because you _want_ to listen to music, not to be hip.

    True this is a great starter. I would also say that you can use an older vintage amplifier, or any better amplifier with decent speakers, instead of powered speakers. That way you can cable them properly and spread them apart, as they should be, away from the turntable.

      the lp220 usb is basically a 1200 buy with usb and you can't mess with the sicko pre amped audio outs. but yahhh, you're right. I think it should be impossible to not at least give the 1200 an honorable mention. maybe they were trying to sell product by getting people interested by the USB option and maybe the video was funded by techniques who was adamant about only pushing the usb-USB products.

    Being fully manual(no auto-return mechanism) is a PLUS, not a minus. If you're using a turntable to record your favourite songs to storage media(converting to MP3, for instance), then you DON'T want the sound of the mechanism triggering, just as the last few seconds of the inner-most(last song) song or instrumental track is playing. I had a turntable that did that very thing and it was annoying as all hell.

    they say vinyl is in the middle of a BIG HUGE comeback every 5 to 10 years. I've seen it make a come back since the 90's. vinyl made a comeback 5 years after first coming out. it makes comeback as often as scientists announcing that they'll be able to generically clone dinosaur dna in 5 years like they do every 5 years.

    • @crowfeedreactions
      @crowfeedreactions 8 лет назад +1

      Not really. Vinyl is definitely coming back in a big way, with total number of record sales matching totals that the industry hasn't seen since the late 80's.
      www.google.com/search?q=vinyl+sales+figures+over+time&espv=2&biw=1777&bih=903&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiHwuzg3avOAhWI6oMKHQpsAnEQ_AUIBygC&dpr=0.9#imgrc=ZEy5Z7K8yNemQM%3A
      That said, vinyl will never again reach the heights it did in the 70's and will always remain a niche product. That's fine by me. As long as it keeps chugging along, which it is definitely doing, when other formats have disappeared.

    While I do agree with his take on the AT-LP120, I don't _entirely_ agree on his views with 99.00 turntables as a bad beginner turntable. In my opinion, there is *only one* good $99 turntable for beginners and that's the AT-LP60. Luckily my wife and I had some previous experience with vinyl records before we purchased the AT-LP60. It's not nearly as nice as the LP120, but it also won't overwhelm beginners who have never been in the hobby of collecting vinyl records. I can be a good testament to this since we have both the LP60 and the LP120. They're both very good turntables, the LP120 is obviously better, but that doesn't necessarily mean that newcomers should purchase it. It might overwhelm them. I think the LP60 is much better for people who are returning to vinyl collecting after taking years off, and newcomers who have never operated a turntable in their lives. The rest he said was absolutely true. Stay away from Target, Urban Outfitters, JCPenny, and Best Buy, or anywhere else that sells a suitcase turntable, or a Jensen, or an ION. Pure Junk.

  • @AudioFileZ
    @AudioFileZ 7 лет назад

    As a old hi-fi dude I do think that the AT-120 is the absolute lowest cost deck one should consider if decent sound and record preservation tick your primary decision boxes. The Project Debut and U-Turn should also be considered. I might say if you like direct-drive but don't care for the AT for some reason you could choose between the Pioneer PLX-500 & 1000 models. Of course if you want real vintage stuff you've to to go to audio resale sites of which eBay is the ubiquitous one. If you want to know what one of the first great minimalist hi-fi turntables was like try to pick up a AR - XA model that is working and in good shape. The weak spot was always the tonearm which was so simple it was if it was stripped to the bare essentials. That said as long as it was lubricated and mated with a sympathetic cartridge/stylus it most certainly overachieved to a almost amazing level that was hard to quantify. The AR still has the best realized suspension system at a reasonable cost (an old one might need adjusting or replacement of the springs, but maybe not). The only other widely available turntable with the same suspension was the Linn LP12 which was sometimes over 10X more expensive than the AR if certain recommended mods were either ordered or added. The bottom line is as 2017 suddenly vinyl is not just back but the equipment to play it on is too. This should be an exciting year for turntable buyers as more choices seem to come out every month.

      This guy doesn't really know his stuff... Out of all starter tables, I would recommend the Pro-Ject DC or the U Turn Audio Orbit. Turn to /r/vinyl on Reddit if you are looking for advice and getting into the vinyl community.

      I would definitely consider this Audio Technica model, the exact same model the guy is showing. Honestly, I haven't try it but one of the good things Audio Technica is known for is the quality of sound of their products. What I do have is a pair of headphones from the brand and both have been great for years, the best headphones I've ever had. I also really like Pro-Ject's turntables designs but this review is not that far from being actually accurate. If you want some others reviews and models you should check this page: www.turntablelab.com/collections/turntables-for-listening-alpha

    Pretty sure there's a cueing lever on this turntable so... no need to manually set the needle down or pick it up. You would just use the cueing lever... as with most turntables.

    Saying a that a CD is 'better' than Vinyl is like saying an electronic keyboard is 'better' than a full sized grand piano. Some people may prefer an electric keyboard for is convenience and its portability. But the grand piano provides a far more superior experience and allows for the user/listener to have a more pure listening experience, and a soulful connection to the music. That is how i feel about vinyl.
    Peace.

    I like your approach whether I agree with your basic choice. Keep it simple and ensure the cartridge uses 2.0 gram downforce or less. I don't think your audience is up to the gazillion models available, and the upgrade to the Pro-ject is always a good one.

    Wrong ;) The Rega RP1 is a better choice. It does not look like a DJ player and it's a little bit cheaper. Atleast here in Norway. Aprox 250 USD.

    • @socksumi
      @socksumi 4 года назад

      Rega RP1 is a better sounding table than others at it's price. Turntables do sound different, it's not just the cartridges that affect sound. Even changing the mat can materially affect the sound. Tables like the RP1 sound better than competitors because they are designed for rigidity and use parts of low resonant signature. Thus it interferes less with the stylus groove interface and allows more detail extraction.

    on the at 120 believe there is a manual tone arm lift located back bu the gimbal. you don't have to lift it with your finger,
    that would be outrageous at this price point

    The AT-LP120 performs OK. It is certainly not something I would encourage anyone to spend nearly $300 at. If you're ok with used turntables, you could easily find an Akai AP-206 for about $80-120, which is a good performer in just about every aspect. That would leave you with at least $180 to find a decent cartridge. IMO you could spend about the same amount of money and get a setup far superior to the AT-LP120

  • @teutguy1
    @teutguy1 5 лет назад

    They have to put auto return or at least auto stop on that turntable ,,, then it would be perfect...I don't want to play chase the needle all the time...now that more folks are getting back into vinyl I am sure the more higher quality automatic tables are right around the corner...or a new linear tracking turntable...I had one,,,wish I still did,,,it took great care of my vinyl collection...

    I'm 56 and when I was buying Vinyl years ago the average album costs around $7.00 - $11.00 and I just saw what best buy has to offer a few days ago made me laugh out loud $23 -$27 for most of the same albums I already own. When I was introduced to music CD in the late 80s I was floored but the amazing sound and then DVD pushed the limits again with 5.1Dolby and all the variations of that . So why go back to vinyl unless you want to do some transfers to digital. Just my two cents

      A lot of records are pressed on 180g vinyl now compared to the 100g or 120g variants that were common in the 20th century. 180g feels more solid and lasts longer, but is naturally more expensive

    • @MrDonXX
      @MrDonXX 8 лет назад

      I could see 180g vinyl being an improvement so thats good. I just feel even allowing for inflation and the scale of economy are you getting the equivalent features in your purchase for vinyl comparing the same music in DVD or CD. Hard to say ?
