“Sick moves and easy lapping. My kind of river” | Cullasaja

  • The Cullasaja I’ve definitely seen growing up, but like the rest of the runs I’ve been getting, just never got the chance to check it out. But this year finally made it over with the Long Creek boys, and it was so good. Just super fun technical rapids and a sick section at the lower, which is easy to lap. As well as lots of roadside rapids upstream, perfect for parking and hucking. Yet again another new run, and as all the runs have seem to do, it didn’t disappoint.

I love how you show the importance of scouting. It’s such a crucial part of our sport and gets overlooked because of the desire to see action footy. Thanks Dane!

I remember a dude named Ed something who died on Raven Fork bc he didn't scout a rapid for wood.

I love these twice weekly videos. Honestly I've learned a lot watching how you go down, and what paddle stroke you take, and when you take it. I honestly think watching you guys shed prepares the brain for when i'm on the water. I just feels easier and easier, more intuitive.

Grew up in Franklin paddling these drops! There is a fun cave in the center hole of the main slide, and some fun jumps - you can launch your boat off a 20' cliff into the pool if you're feeling spicy. Love the content!

Does anyone ever pull those logs out of the rivers? I've seen them on several of your videos now. Just curious? Also, thanks for filming the Cullasaga. I've looked down many times from the road to Highlands from Franklin and wondered if kayakers ran this small but mighty river. I've been to Dry Falls and Bridal Veil Falls and love this area.

Unbelievable collection of steep creeks in that area. Cullasaja, Horsepasture,, Toxiway, Whitewater and Thompsons all close together. A steep creekers paradise.

I guess the extra volume on the other boats bows helped running that last rapid smoother, right? Running that on a river runner is so sick! It reminds me my ozzy friend Josh Waterson running creeks on a playboat 18 years ago!

Why don't you have that stock GoPro mount on the front of your Antix? I think it would be a cool POV. Have you ever considered 360 video? I am a big GoPro fan but got into 360 with Insta360 brand cameras and I never thought I would have loved 360 so much. You could post the video as a pure 360 and viewers can decide where to look or if watching on an iPhone or iPad, as they turn the device, they can see a different view. Or, you can edit it to choose where you want the camera looking at different times and post it as a flat video. My last two videos on my channel were like that. I posted a 360 run of a zipline in Helen, GA and then the same run where it is a flat video and I choose the camera view.

Sick moves and easy lapping for sure....but definitely not easy moves for sick lapping! I remember being as gripped as I've ever been running parts of the Cully.
Was that T-Bone you were park and hucking in the middle of the video? I remember there being rough looking but very avoidable pothole in the drop that I wasn't noticing in the footage. But it has also been more than 15 years since I was in there, so my memory may not be reliable.
Did you check out the other rapids on the Upper when you were scouting Cosmic Crunch? I can understand not wanting to paddle/portage the couple of miles between the Triple Drop and Nemesis, but I remember it being pretty continuous from Nemesis (which I want to say could be park-and-hucked) down to Cosmic Crunch with maybe 150 yards between Nemesis's third drop and Bricklayer Falls, then a few hundred yards of breathing room between Bricklayer and a Class IV notch/drop that I can't remember the name of, and then another ~150 yards between between the bottom of that drop and (where you'd get out for) Cosmic Crunch.

Dane: I think you could use a few more sponsor stickers on your equiptment, not being sarcastic, not go "full on NASCAR, but maybe place a sticker on the paddle shaft between your hands, unless of course if you tried that and felt it was distracting to the viewers, maybe a bigger one on the left side paddle, something in the middle of the kayak in middle that you can read from the camera. I noticed you had your name on your right sleeve but it is upside down for the viewer, maybe next time write it so the viewer can read it, or really not a bad place to put a sponsor patch. And, It's probably time you get your own personal logo too. You are doing great. Love your videos especiall the ones in the eastern US. I've been visiting SW North Carolina for 27 years and love when you show videos from that area like the Cullasaga. Safe travels buddy.
