Let him know Japhands sent you!
On this episode of Make It Kustom, I’m giving you a full rundown on one of my favourite tools at the shop! The ‘Shape-O-Matic’ power hammer from Sosa Metalworks! This helve hammer is amazing for metal shaping and in this video you’ll see a demonstration on a circular piece of sheet metal, as I use various dies to shrink the metal into a dish shape. To help smooth it out, I finish it off on my planishing hammer.

At over half a century worth of making and working about a 1/4 of a seconds worth of that thing going flat out is about how many times I've apprenticed my left thumb nail over said same period. That thing is terrifying. Be well and stay safe.
Edit : Left thumbs up for the shape-O-matic for me.
A passionate man leads to creation of a sophisticated tools,I love the way you resolve unique hindrances in a particular task.
Thanks man I appreciate it! Thanks for watching and supporting us
Sign me up. Great demonstration, enjoy watching a craftsman at work. Im a lifelong custom woodworker, built boats, kayaks and worked on corporate aircraft. Do custom work on metal lathes and mills but have not explored sheetmetal. Damn one can be creative. Very interesting processes. Thanks for sharing your passion and we craftsman and craftswoman know where the passion for sharing is coming from.
Awesome sounds like you have quite the experience! I hope you try metal shaping I’m sure you’ll like it!
That’s it! That’s the one. That’s the most terrifying machine I have seen
Haha! It definitely can be for sure! Don’t want to get your fingers too close 😬
This thing will crush your fingers into many tiny bits
I've just recently started watching your channel and what an adventure it is! Getting a first hand at the vast tools and approaches to metalworking is truly inspiring. From your experience, to your attitude and positive vibes...it's awesome being able to watch not only what you do, but also how you do it. Very good instructing and teaching, I started here with your MIG welding video and now I've probably watched around 60% of your channel content!
Karl is such a intelligent guy. I am always astonishing at his skill range !
How many times have you gotten your fingers in that power hammer :)
Luckily none!! But I've heard some horror stories!
Thanks for the video and skills. Keep those fingers safe bruh
Uma máquina simples mais com uma eficiência incrível! Acompanho seu trabalho, continue nos presentiando com sua técnicas.
In the words of Jesse James "it's real good at making blood shoot out from underneath your fingernails" 😁
For that reason i think i dont need one.
I admire these people that build, restore and customize car, trucks there skills are brilliant, not to speak of ingenuity
Thanks Shane!
Woodworkers: Now let's ensure all our safety guards and stops are setups and secure before we begin operations. Metalworkers: Let's spray this sharp metal with WD-40 before pushing it into a hand crushing hammer swinging at ludicrous speeds.... haha. LOVE your work man, keep that artform alive!
Lol I never was good at woodworking
To be fair rotating saws are much more dangerous
You got good design skills, the half leaf spring is a brilliant solution.
Yeah it works awesome but not my design Sosa Metalworks built this and made a kit
This is the perfect power hammer, working smooth.
I'm a Brazilian fan of your work!
Wow.
I am currently practicing and learning more about doing a similar process with a similar result - hollow form raising - with metals like copper and silver done with hand tools.
THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge! Im glad i found your channel. Awesome channel I love it!
Thanks for checking us out!! Happy to have ya!
You lied !
You are a super expert on those machines Karl ! !
Brilliant job !
And also for building them !
Hopefully you can pass on the word to Mr Sosa that there is plenty more people who want to buy his Shape-O-Matic quick build kits. 👍👍😎👍👍
I know, right! I've been bugging him about it. I need a second one as well haha
Man! That’s a nifty machine and dies!
Makes the sheet look maluable like a wet coffee filter! 😄
Very good demo...
and Sweety is a great photographer for your program!
She sure is I’ll pass that on! Thank you
THANK YOU ,KARL!!!
GREAT VIDEOS: REFRESHING MY MIND; ALSO LEARN A LOT TOO!! ( YOU ARE THE PROFFESOR' OF YOU TUBE CHANNEL)
GOD BLESS YOU, RALPH'
You are awesome for sharing your passion in metal working/ car building etc. I am a newbie, and your vids. Are stoking the fire in me to try out more in the art of metal working while not going broke, so many thanx to you and please keep it shaping!! Matt S. Fla.
Haha great to hear mathew! You’re most welcome!
a joy to watch a master use tools
Thanks Bill! I’ll always be a student of the craft.
Thanks for showing that tool and how it works. Will make myself one when I get some time off, I have plenty of scrap material to make it.
Right on!
That hammer is insane! I would love this for blacksmithing!
Definitely this hammer design came from blacksmithing!
I learnt something today! thankyou! you can see the relevance between the paper pattern and the shrinking process
Glad to hear it man 👊👊👊
Good morning Carl, what a fantastic finish. That helve hammer really moves metal. Very clever and inventive piece of equipment. Your design for the planishing hammer is very interesting. To be able to adjust it for pressure is also quite clever. Really enjoyed the video. Thanks for the great video. You take care and good luck.
Hey Steve, thanks man! The shape-o-matic really does have a lot of power for its size. I’m proud of the planishing hammer design and hope to have it on the market soon!
Cheers!
I run a engine machine shop and do some pretty neat things with engine blocks. It is nothing compared to the voodoo your doing to that piece of metal. Great job. Love the skill.
Thanks man I appreciate that! I’m sure most of the things that you do with engine blocks is voodoo to me lol cheers!
That's one of the coolest homemade machines ever 😍😍 Awesome tool 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Yeah man absolutely love this hammer for its size it’s definitely the most bang for your buck
Karl, I buy WD-40 by the gallon and I have a spray bottle I refill I’ve seen you use a few times to coat a surface, this works pretty well.
Exelentes trabajos , muy joven y un gran viaje ! Felicidades 💪💪💪💪💪
Karl's ready for some Holman and Moody action.
Hi Karl, so happy I found your channel. Your likability and willingness to share awesome talent is appreciated. I predict rapid growth in subscribers of this channel.
Thanks for your support man I hope so!
You are an amazing craftsman.
Necessity is the mother of all inventions !!! Way too cool 😎
Agreed! It sure is. Thank you!
I'm living through you my fellow American. Video person did an outstanding job to.Thank you.👍
I’ll tell Kristina that! She is great with the camera and making the videos. We are Canadian! Cheers my fellow North American!
@@MakeItKustom Awesome stuff my Canadian friends. Thanks for sharing 👍
I wish Sosa was still making the the shape-o-matic! It’s A great machine!! Love the video and the inspiration!!
Thanks man glad you dig the vid! I have on good authority that he’s not thru making em yet! Time will tell 👊
Awesome, just found your channel. You definitely got to do a shop tour video. Keep up the killer work!!
Great idea man thanks! Coming up soon
I REALLY like that hammer! Great design! That's another piece of machinery you wouldn't want to get your fingers caught in...Make it smaller and tighter with a bit more arc and a guy could make a set of "baby moons" with that hammer.
Yep it would make quick work of that that’s for sure! It’s such a great hammer and finally he is making them again!
Cool stuff, I'm currently building a 40 dodge coupe in Edmonton and am scared as hell of body work. Its my first hotrod and would like to do most of the work myself and your videos are helping me to do just that. Hopefully I can gain some confidence and save some money at the same time. Keep up the good work.
That’s so wicked Danny! Sounds like a really cool project! I’m so glad you’re finding our videos helpful! Give me a shout if you ever have any questions, I would be happy to help. You can do it!!!!
@@MakeItKustom Thanks, I appreciate all the help I get
awesome combination of machines (guess the skill helps a little too lol)
Newish sub and watching all the library. Thanks a ton (really) for putting all this out. The filming, pace, lighting etc are all very good and make a good show. Thank ya'll for sharing.
Thank you very much for subbing and I appreciate the feedback! I hope you enjoy it all and catch up to us we don’t plan on stopping! Cheers
Your planishing hammer that is a air hammers we use them in duct shops to air hammer Pittsburgh seems down very interesting how you are using it for your homemade machine no I wish I had one
Karl...You have an awesome channel..my favorite hands down!! I learn something with every episode. As Gene Winfield says so often, "every day is a school day". This video inspired me to purchase Christian's kit. Could you please clarify for me the intended wall thickness for the 2x2 top arm? I assume it's 1/8" but not sure. My plan, because I have the steel, is to do that piece in 1/8", the 4x4 upright in 1/4", and the other 2x2 bracing in 3/16". Does this make sense to you? Also, having used the machine for a while, would you suggest any changes such as working height or possibly adding 2 legs in the back so it could be moved on casters? Thanks brother for all you do and your help with my questions.
Hey Chris I’m so glad that you decided to get the kids sorry it took so long for me to get back to you I hope you got it figured out. The top arm is 3/16 or quarter. Definitely not 1/8. This machine cannot be put on casters
You should look for design applications for that hammering method, as the look that the hammer leaves is fantastic strictly from an
artistic look.
Nice! I'll have to keep an eye open for when you start selling those hoops ( as a fellow Canadian who hates paying for US shipping I would snag one of those for sure)
Right on man! Did a ton of design changes and hoping to have them ready for sooner than later
Went from “Most likely to die while using” to “Almost theraputic to use” tools. Awsome. Want them both.
Ha ha they definitely speed things up!
Carl any chance we could get the Max o Matix reviewed? ive ordered the shape o matic but would like to get the Max o Matic add on if it looks like it works, thanks for your videos and teaching on metal work.
Hey man Your a great metal man. I am from Nova Scotia and love metal working. Currently building a 33 Ford pro street
Right on man I love a 33 Ford! Thank you so much cheers
Can you summarize why you built this style power hammer over a fixed stroke reciprocating hammer like a pullmax? I’m aware a recip hammer is not a power hammer and not a planishing hammer but it looks like you’re using your machine just like you would use a pullmax. Just curious. Thanks.
Nice!
If you fill the basetubes with sand you'll get the noise down.
Thanks for the tip Roger!
Just came across your channel I'm learning a lot thanks for the insight bro God bless
You’re so welcome thanks for subscribing!
Excellent, like your idea's and workmanship, really skilled.
Thanks a lot Shane!
Thanks man. As I continue to learn with mine, I see where I was to hard on it. Such a powerful machine. I love it. Keep the vids coming. When are the shaping classes coming?
It’s a powerful machine for sure ! Takes some getting used too. Not eta on the classes yet but hoping very soon
@@MakeItKustom I’m down for learning new skills. I’m 61 and will be attending your workshop when you have it.
@@MakeItKustom I follow you 💯 from 🇨🇦 #YSW iam ready about metalshaping and metalworking but never had the chance to do anything with metal
Thanks for the content, just love watching talented people doing there thing on tha U tube
Thanks so much Kevin 🙏 Really appreciate that man. Stoked you’re enjoying the channel
Awesome video, Sosa is the man, Man I'm diggin on that hammer!!!!
Yeah dude what a great guy and a genius
That wheel stop design has to be inspired by lawnmowers. You see that style wheel stop for the blades everywhere.
Inspiration comes in many different places! I think the rubber piece itself is an exhaust hanger
Hi, greetings from Uruguay, how it was the thickness sheet before and after that operations ?.
As an experiment: (before seeing this video) i made a very similar mild steel domed object ~ 2" across using hand tools.
Love your planishing hammer. I need to save up!
Would love to build you wan Michael thank you!
Good skills there and very informative. Thanks.
Thank you!
Hard question: If you only had $8000 US to spend on shop tools for fabrication, metal shaping of all kinds for automobiles) what tools would you get. You can excluded welders, compressors, and any cheap hand held tools like metal shears, etc. I'm thinking of things like the one in this video, english wheel, brake/shear, stretcher/ shrinker...etc....
Hey Hello guys welcome to shape hammer and we guarantee we will change your shape with our hammer Lolz, great Video brother Carl Lovely explanation. Love and warm regards from India 🙏🏻🙏🏻
😂😂😂
Carl I follow your teachings they are simply awesome seriously lots of souls are enlightened with you sharing precise knowledge, your bank will always increase since sharing knowledge will only increases it further more, rest all goes on the downward curve upon being used!!, May almighty God bless you Brother Carl, hope to work with you someday 👍🏻👍🏻 love respect and very warm regards from India 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️
you are a wizard . great skills. l enjoy your videos.
Thanks man I’m glad you like them!
Oh I love love your shop🇺🇸 if you don’t mind me asking what size is the shop? I’ll be doing an addition to my garage when lumber comes down,Just doing the finishing touches on a big air compressor addition an IR 253 head with a 7 1/2 motor and 120 gallon tank in my attic. You are skilled man love the channel✌️
Thanks a lot Scott! The shop is 3000 ft.² including the office and storage room it’s the perfect size for me! Lumber is a bitch it seems like it came down a little bit but it has a long way to go lol
I want to know more about making basic hand tools . I have a wood bat I want to build into a hammer, what are some common anvil shapes needed that I can add to my bottle base anvil/stump. How do you make a shaping sand bag?
I usually make them as I need them. I use “T dollys” a lot which are round bar welded to flat bar. The bat will make a great shrinking hammer I’ll make some more videos on this stuff
What a great tool!
Ingegnosissimo !! Fantastic work fantastic machine ✌️✌️👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
Learning a lot from this video, thanks!!👍👊
Great to hear it! Your welcome 🙏
Do you think you could make a really remedial video explaining the dies and how they are moving the metal to shrink it? You kind of lost me when you touched on it and it would be really helpful to see it explained again in more detail. I want to understand it but I’m just not grasping it very well. I’m sure it would help some other guys like me who follow you and may be struggling with understanding what’s happening to the metal when the hammers are going. Keep up the great videos!! 💪💪
Great idea I’ll do it!
What kind differences are there between theese tool and the pneumatic Power Hammer?
Exelente equipamento!
I want to start doing some metalwork, but need to find a house where I won't be ruining my neighbors with the sounds of my fun. What's the sound like outside of shop with doors closed? I know I can hear my compressor kick off in the middle of the night if I forget to turn it off.
It’s not too bad here there’s a lot of insulation. If you’re close to your neighbours you can use sound absorbing squares from Amazon
Супер станки!!
Please post a link for purchasing this tool.
Thank you.
Hey there! I totally would, but unfortunately at this moment Sosa isn’t producing them and they’re not on his site. Im hoping he will start making them again really soon, because I need another one myself!
do you havw any links to where someone could get whats needed to build one of the powerhammers ?
Hey man! Unfortunately at the moment, he doesn't have any available for sale. But hopefully really soon, because I need to get myself another one hahah
I sure hope some day they do become available. I need one.
Karl, what is the stroke on the eccentrics that drive the lever? What is the rpm and HP on the motor (1750?)?
About 2” stroke and 3450 rpm but 1750 would be plenty.
Wow! I used to waterski with the guy who invented the thumbnail die. He sold the invention to Dake. Here's a video of Denis demonstrating the power hammer, he designed the whole unit and the dies. The was actually filmed in his garage in. You'll note the Drake unit is a lot quieter.
RIP Dennis. ☹
you couldn't tell me where i could buy one of those air motors you are using in your planishing hammer
Great video as always. How do they make those front bumper bullets?
Thanks Stephen! If you’re referring to the giant Cadillac ones as well as most bumpers they all stamped with presses. They could be made on this machine though
Very nice power hammer work!!!!!
Thanks man!
Dang it! I could have used those tools to make my hoodscoop for my 55 Chevy gasser style car! Had to do it caveman style. Bending over a pipe, slicing wedges, welding, heating up and beating on it. But hay I got it done and it looks good enough for the girls I date! 😄👍
Right on man just use what you got and get her done!
I'd like to use this to straighten my hub caps.
incredible!
Does the kit come with any spare fingers?
Nice job, but frightening machine. I'm amazed it's legal!
Lol it’s scary until you try it
Awesome ,do you have resources for seminars or classes for fab stuff if so can you put them in the links
At the moment he is not doing any classes but I know that he wants to start up again so it’s best to watch his Instagram at Sosa Metalworks. Another great resource is pro shaper workshop
GREAT TOOL... think I'll build one for my 6 Yr olds birthday 👍😘
I need to get those two tools! That's awesome!
Yeah you do they are definitely worth having!
Thank you.That was awesome
You’re welcome!
Noisey bugger but it only saved two years of hand hammering out the piece. Lol
I'm gathering information to build a couple hammers for myself now I've decided to go with hollow tubing so I can fill with sand and reduce noise
Thanks for teaching!
You’re welcome Dave!
🙋🏼♂️Muito Bom irmão parabéns Amigo pelo trabalho 🙌🏻👍🏻🇧🇷
👊👊👊🙏🙏🙏
Would like to see how you’d map out a project to use a tool like that.
There’s another video where I cover the basics I believe the title is metal shaping using these three tools
Do they still make this? or do they sell plans to make them , I’ve searched and cannot find anything on the hammer.
I have been in contact with him recently and he does not have any ready yet but he is actively working on bringing more to market
Does this give better curvature than the English roller?
They both have their strong suits
Amazing machine!! Just drill a few holes in the arms of that noisy boy and fill them with polyurethane expanding foam, you'll notice a great noise reduction. Great inspiring videos mate, Congrats!!!!
Thanks
For the tip!
Nice finger masher 7000! Yikes. Keep your whits about you when using this one boys.
As much as I love projects I’d have to say the building tools for the project is my favorite.
How did you get that? Ive been trying to get a hold of him for months
I just saw that he is opening his pre-order!
I would less fingers then a high school shop teacher if I had one of those I’m the shop!!! Iv never had a chance to use a power hammer, Iv always wanted to try thumbnail dies... perhaps one day 🤞
Definitely a game changer!
AWESOME.
I wonder how many thumbs that style tool has crushed?
I wonder that too 😆
Bro I'm new to your channel and love your content
Thank you so much man! Welcome to the channel!
Karl how did you get the class and how did you get the Shape o matic hammer? I have tried to look up on the internet, and his facebook page he doesn't respond.
Is most active on Instagram. It’s best to reach out to him there
Also his website has the hammer on there to be purchased
