- The Smiling Critters have been a huge mystery to the Poppy Playtime lore.
First appearing in chapter 3, introducing Catnap and Dogday- the rest of the smiling critters have been left a mystery to the Poppy Playtime community.
But today, I went through everything we know about the Smiling Critters, and how we can use it to find which one of them could be in Poppy Playtime Chapter 5.

Which of the Smiling Critters do you think will appear in Chapter 5?
Hoppy like yes the note did say she’s gone, but it did not say she’s dead. I think she got taken away or kidnapped by something below kicking chicken that he’s dead, I am not gonna explain more Bubba maybe he’s alive. I’m not sure dog day I’m really not gonna explain more his organs got eaten inside cause I do hear some crunching noise so yeah he’s dead crafty okay? There’s a slide chance she could be alive Bobby bear hug there’s not look like she could still be alive she probably starved to death piggy piggy I really do not have a answer saying if she’s dead, maybe she’s alive or if she’s definitely alive so yeah crafty maybe she’s still alive. I’m just hoping if some of them are still alive they’re probably in the labs or somewhere below the labs cause I really do not think chapter 5 is the last chapter.

Imma be real here, I think Picky Piggies' voice lines confirm the fates of Kickin' Chicken, Bubba Bubbaphant, and Crafty Corn. They were likely deemed heretics. For Kickin trying to escape, in chapter 4 via the red VHS tape by Poppy, we learn that the prototype didn't want the toys to leave the factory, so his trying to escape was deemed wrong and henceforth died. Bubba likely did something bad to be deemed a heretic as well, so he was offed as well. Finally, Crafty Corn likely went insane, and maybe killed Bubba or someone else to obtain 'red paint'.
As we learn from Dogday, those deemed heretics were EATEN. Piggies descriptions were grilled chicken, seared elephant, and flayed unicorn, aka, Kickin' Chicken, Bubba Bubbaphant, and Crafty Corn. As for Piggy's fate, she likely became gluttonous, given her line, 'still hungry'. When her obsession with cannibalism became too much, she was likely axed off herself.
That's what I believe happened to those four smiling critters, as for Bobby Bearhug, I thought she was confirmed to have died in the orientation notebook. And it sucks to know that Hoppy either went missing or died herself. So when Dogday says he's the last of the smiling critters (excluding Catnap of course), he really means it. Edit 2: As of Chapter 5, we have heard dialogue from Bobby Bearhug, suggesting that she was fixed after the initial experiment. For anyone reading this now, I was under the false persumption that Bobby died, because of misinformation spreaded via a Game Theory. I dont know why were still commenting on this a year later, but if more info is revealed, Ill make edits so people are more informed.
I mean maybe Bobby Bearhug is still in the laboratory of the factory (where chapter 5 takes place)

Also, on the food that was eaten, Human flesh has been described by Cannibals to taste like a "Mix between Pork and Beef". This means Prior to the other critters, Picky had been eating humans.
I guess it would make sense why the small smiling critters were residents of the safe haven while the small nightmare critters were minions of the doctor
Dogday straight up said "i'am the last of the smiling critters" and what he meant by "come to save us" means ALL the toys not only the smiling critters

Well Catnap was still alive when he said that so
I think dogday either didn’t know there was at least one other critter alive or was lying so catnap wouldn’t go after them.
He also acknowledged Catnap. So "last of the Smiling Critters" doesn't necessarily mean "last one alive", maybe just "last one that's not a traitor".
I believe that when they say that the lost Hoppy, they don’t mean Hoppy died, Hoppy disappeared and never came back, I feel like he still is roaming and trying to find his way back after getting lost, that’s just my head cannon, it makes me feel happy
actually, I think hoppy dies in the Pianosaurus comic (or heavily injured) you should read it online but if you just wanna know what happened to hoppy, basically:
While piano was dancing, his imagination rendered him unable to see reality, and Hoppy who saw him dancing wanted to follow up, Pianosaurus seeing him as an audience member danced with him,
In Pianosaurus's mind he was still dancing with hoppy
But in reality he stomped on Hoppy likely killing them.
@quakequackhas to be a smaller hoppy than the actual bigger body, pianosaurus was kinda small in-game
actually you're quite late cause there's a more heavy theory that was commented here last year regarding Hoppy's possible death. Your theory is nice but knowing that there's no safe place other than Safe Haven, whether she's injured or not, so many toys will kill Hoppy.

We can hear Hoppy practically begging someone to “jump”, so she and the other toy probably went to get the supplies back and needed to jump across a chasm in order to escape. The other toy was too scared, and Hoppy likely sacrificed herself so they could get away

Here are my guesses.
The Doctor unalived Hoppy Hopscotch during an expedition (cutout hints of them not being able to jump high enough to escape).
Bobby Bearhug was trapped in a cell and probably passed away in silence.
Bubba Bubbaphant knew too much and was fed to Piggy.
KickinChicken managed to escape the factory but was caught by The Prototype and fed to Piggy.
CraftyCorn probably became a liability from the color red (she went insane) and was fed to Piggy.
Side note I've read stories of soldiers hallucinating demons due to their night vision being red instead of green back then and if you stare at your room with a red light long enough, you start to see things.
PickyPiggy was used by The Prototype and/or Doctor to get rid of heretics by forcing her to eat them until she also went insane and was offed.
And we all know what happened to DogDay and CatNap

Bubba Bubbaphant was definitely killed by Catnap himself. You can tell because of the laughing, which was shown in the smiling critters cartoon when the characters were exposed to the red gas. Bubba Bubbaphant was probably killed by catnap for knowing too much, as he was the intelligent one. I assume when all the characters were killed, they were fed to Piggy after already being dead.
I think hoppy got in a squabble with the prototype and lost, or in the Jail somewhere

I find it interesting how in Hoppy's tape they mention having lost supplies while trying to bring them to playcare. Something tells me that Hoppy was most likely pretending to be on Catnap's side while still trying to care for everyone secretly. Hoppy must've been on the front lines being with Catnap often pretending to be on their side. Being as swift as can be imagined, Hoppy was probably the one in charge of bringing back supplies altogether. Must've been really stressful for the poor critter. At least that's my theory.

The plausible scenario is that Safe Haven and Playcare formed an alliance against the growing feral sickness that causes these feral toys into cannabalism, as in eating other toys. Either of them has abundance food supplies that can be traded for something else valuable, this can explain the goods store you find in the center of Safe Haven (Gas mask filters for some reason)
I think it's suffice to say that Poppy choose to live in Safe Haven which may have extended the territory all the way in No Man's land, but is able to convince the majority of the group to fight against Prototype, that way this no longer considers Safe Haven as allies and now heretics to Catnap as blasphemy to his god.
I think the prototype eventually intervened with a cease fire, possibly because secret negotation with poppy is made to spare Safe Haven survivors and Playcare got the spoils of war for them to feast on, possibly most of the strong defenders of Safe Haven.
It remains unclear who attacked Hoppy and another survivor, possibly nightmare critters

@douma8-x3k why would Picky kill herself, it would make more sense that she swore allegiance to the prototype, and not long after, Bobby would die (we know Bobby was a failed experiment, she couldn't even walk)

1:49 she died because her legs didn’t work when she needed someone to help her if she wanted to use them, but if no one was there to help her she probably died alone in a corner by herself

Another thing I noticed: Picky Piggy or whatever her name was, says: Flayed Unicorn, yum! and Seared Elephant, yum! My memory may not be perfect, but considering that 2 of her friends were a unicorn and an elephant, it’s a possibility for me that she, well, ate them. Because she was starving.

Hoppy being alive makes a lot of sense, her BB head is already a thing we see in chapter 4, it means there is potentially a full body model for her, meaning the chances of her appearing in the game would be quite decent

Kickin: Dead, Attempted to escape but was fed to picky
Crafty: Dead, went crazy and fed to picky
Hoppy: Inconclusive: could have left on her own and is still alive or killed by the nightmare critters.
DogDay: Dead, was taken over by the mini critters and died by internal bleeding but the mini critters control him
Catnap: do I have to explain him? But obviously dead
Picky: inconclusive, could be with the prototype as a punishment tool or died of starvation

Craftycorn's voicelines didn't end with statics she also said "ah now thats much better" wich states that she might bacame insane. Plus picky piggy didn't just easily eat a unicorn that went insane, they've must have faught first till picky gets to eat craftycorn or at least a part of her
Does 'flayed' gives you hint that Craftcorn didn't die immediately? Unlike Bobba and Kickin (chicken was subtle and nothing out of ordinary at first)

None of them are alive dogday said he is the last of the smiling critters. And at the end of the chase he gets finished off by the rest of the mini critters and we burn catnap on fire with his red smoke and our green hand, then the prototype finished them off

I think hoppy was running from someone/something in her lines, in the cardboard cutout thingy she keeps forcing the person to hop and hop more,probably telling the person to hop faster. At one of the lines, Hoppy tells the toy to not look at their feet implying that they were slowing down because of their feet shaking or the toy was looking back and getting distracted and freezing in fear. At the last line Hoppy says “JUMP, JUUUUU-“ which could mean that she sacrificed herself (By distracting or fighting back) and is telling us to run fast to escape before the thing thats chasing them is done with massacring Hoppy.
Its quiet sad once you realized that bubba is calling momma in his screaming..

There are multiple Smiling Friends in the game, so there is no guarantee that they used the same for experimentation.

Nice to hear Hoppy Hopscotch being one of the successful ones, seeing how deranged Catnap was and Bobby Bearhug was a failed experiment also 😅
Bobby was only a failure at the start. The Book said they were working on fixing the kinks, meaning they _EVENTUALLY_ got her working.
And before you have a go, people seem to ignore that at absolutely NO POINT did Bobby "Expire" in the book or the notes. They just said "We need to work out the problem, so further experimentation is in order".
This means Bobby was still alive and being constantly worked on at the time of the page writing.

They didn't carry on with the Smiling Critters until they worked out the errors they made in Bobby's brain wiring.
This also means that she was already walking and talking by the time BBI Hoppy was being created.
Then again, Mob Entertainment keeps slinging out _ideas_ and then don't do anything with them. We are just having cool and interesting characters thrown at us, and then they disappear or are killed off-screen.

Here is my theory on the order of deaths of the smiling critters:
- KickinChicken who was considered the brave and cool one tried to set the group to escape, he died as soon as he stepped outside by CatNap
- Bubba Bubbaphant being too trusty and always the first to check things out, gets killed by CraftyCorn due to her insanity. He laughs and screams thinking its a game.
- CraftyCorn may have gotten lynched by the four remaining members for going insane and killing Bubbaphant.
- PickyPiggy after eating the three smiling critters, she dies of starvation or maybe eats herself since the other three members escaped or left.
Now these three can be confusing.
So Dogday, Hoppy Hopscotch and Bobby Bearhug are running from CatNap when they run into the caves underneath the play house.
When the huge holes in the cavern that needs to be jumped, Dogday jumps and then its Hoppy's and Bobby's turn. However, Bobby either gets scared or doesn't jump.
Hoppy returns to help Bobby jump, but when attempting to jump. Hoppy either miscalculates the jump and falls to her death or as soon as she was about to jump, cat nap kills her.
This causes Bobby to just stare at Hoppy's body at the bottom of the cave floor or sliced in half thinking she was a true friend for hopping back to save her.
This results in Dogday yelling for Bobby to leave and to run while he distracts CatNap, little did he know Bobby is traumatized by Hoppy's death.
So when Catnap injures Dogday, and takes him to the playhouse to be tortured, Bobby is left alone and lost as all of her friends are dead or taken prisoner.
Also search *all nightmare critter cutout animation (poppy playtime)*
when hoppys cut out board glitches, it actually meant he jumped too far
and when picky ate those things, it meant she was eating her friends. heres an example "Grilled Chicken! Down the Hatch! Frayed Unicorn!"
Actually, Picky Piggy is very concious about what she eats and values a healthy diet!

I feel like the toy that got they're leg bit was Kicken Chicken because of the way the voice sounds, and maybe the scream in the cutout is when he got jumped when he went out of the safe haven to find supplies. And in the cutout he asks if we can come with him, maybe meaning he asked Hoppy to go out with him.

1:14- You can also him faintly scream 'Grandma', meaning that he was trying to scream for someone he loved (in this case, his grandmother), for help before his demise.

My theories as to the fates of the other smiling critters besides DogDay and Catnap are:
Buba Bubaphant - Learned the truth about "The Hour of Joy" and was eaten by Picky Piggy as punishment in an attempt to silence him.
Kickin Chicken - Attempted to escape after Buba blew the whistle on CatNap and The Prototype but got caught and was eaten by Picky Piggy as punishment.
Hoppy Hopscotch - Managed to get away and survive with Doey and possibly at the time Poppy as well but got separated from the survivors of Safe Haven following a trip outside of it for supplies and their whereabouts are currently unknown. Consider M.I.A until further notice.
Bobby Bearhug - Killed by a Cabin Fever stricken CraftyCorn.
CraftyCorn - Went insane due to coming down with Cabin Fever and killed Bobby Bearhug in her insanity causing her to be eaten by Picky Piggy as punishment.
Picky Piggy - Attempted to eat CatNap in a hunger driven insanity and paid the price for it with her life.
Hoppy is the only one I consider to potentially be still alive due to the fact she managed to get away and hide out the longest along with her fate being the only one unknown among the Smiling Critters. Bobby either got killed by CraftyCorn in a fit of Cabin Fever stricken insanity or starved to death long before the events of the main game. I believe she was killed because CraftyCorn's cutout strongly implies she killed someone and it more than likely was Bobby Bearhug considering the cutout's obsession with the color red.
Buba probably managed to figure out what the real purpose of the Hour of Joy was and was killed in an attempt to silence him, but it was too late, and he blew the whistle on The Prototype. Kicken tried to escape afterwards with Hoppy, implied by his cutout voice lines, but was killed while Hoppy managed to get away from Playcare. Picky Piggy was the second most devoted only because of her picky nature, but it all came to a head when she was so starved for food she started to go crazy and attempted to eat CatNap after eating Kicken, Bubba, and Crafty only to wind up getting killed in the process causing DogDay to attack in retaliation only to get punished by the way we see in the game.
This could be why DogDay calls himself the last of the Smiling Critters, after Hoppy got away he didn't know what happened to her and was too aftraid to try and find out until Picky Piggy's death drove him over the edge in an attempt to try and fight back.

Hoppy's audio starts glitching out at the final Jump, seemingly stuck on it, before a quick distorted scream. We can most likely infer that she fell down somewhere pretty high up trying to flee something.
But I don't think it led to her death because as we've seen with Huggy Wuggy he fell down GOD knows how far and is still somehow kicking regardless. The Bigger Bodies, in general, have shown that they're cpable of taking much more punishment than we really thought they were. CatNap was still kicking after being set on fire and thrashing about until the Prototype used their claw hand to pierce through CatNap's head and kill him. DogDay was still alive for as long as he was despite missing his lower half until his insides were eaten and his body used like a sock puppet.
Doey took a large amount of rubble on him that would've killed any other person, multiple sawblades cutting him up, and only finally died after being squashed by a drill press. Despite the bigger bodies needing to eat, Pianosaurus was somehow still alive and durable enough to survive being thrashed around by Doey before being eaten. We don't know what happened to Kissy Missy, but it really screwed her up and yet somehow, she was still alive. And including factors like Starvation and Weakened Muscles these are them when they're WEAKER. The Bigger Boddies are TOUGH S-O-Bs.
The only thing they seemingly can't take is piercing, pressure, blade damage, or being eaten by other experiments. Mommy Long Legs was ripped apart by an industrial shredder, CatNap was pierced by the Prototype's claws, Doey was ripped apart, squashed, & pierced by the Drill Saw, and Pianosaurus was most likely ripped apart by Doey's bare hands & brute strength. And I will admit that there is a chance Hoppy MAY have landed on a Stalagmite because of this and died but there's also a chance she didn't. Remember the rule of death in storytelling, "no body, no death." Hence why I said, "Consider M.I.A until further notice."
And I know that in Chapter 3 DogDay said he was "The Last of the Smiling Critters" but we have to remember that was in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4 we got a VHS confirming Hoppy Hopscotch managed to escape and lived among Safe Haven until she eventually fell somewhere trying to flee something effectively throwing a wrench in that quote being used as evidence. And in Chapter 3 it's highly implied DogDay's been confined to Playcare so, how could he have known if Hoppy was alive or not? The only way we could assume that is if he was told during one of the food runs to Playcare, but the problem is we have no evidence to make such an assumption and as such DogDay's "Last of the Smiling Critters" quote comes under too much suspicion to be effectively used as evidence anymore.

For crafty corn, I am thinking that the line I know your hiding the red meaning she wants to get OUR blood to keep painting and after the static, theres more lines after the static it was "ah, much better! " meaning she killed one of the smilling critters or orther toys to get red

I’ve got a theory: Hoppy is still alive, but the note was accually foreshadowing when the prototype finds safe haven, so she faked her death, left, escaped the doctor AND prototype, almost died, and made a new safe haven that was stronger than before with Bobby Bearhug.

All of them are alive if you listen to one of the voice lines of Poppy, she said the smiling critters they’re not dead. They were sleeping in the prototype layer so that’s how I know they’re still alive.

*"We're heartbroken."* - means they're sad over the loss of Hoppy, as the term "heartbroken" is an obvious term for sadness. Why and how would you be sad for someone that was missing, *despite* the fact that you didn't even know whether they were dead or not? You'd be *worried* or *"concerned"* for them, not *sad* or *"heartbroken."* If the message was really trying to indicate that they didn't know where Hoppy was, a better term to be used would've been "concerned" and would've mentioned something about her absence, which is never mentioned.
*"Trying to find the right -"* - This is probably the most under-described text of all. It sounds like they're trying to find something or somebody right for something, which indicates that they're trying to find the right replacement for Hoppy Hopscotch after the loss of her.

Wait a goddamn minute. Riley was turned into Bobby Bearhug. She talks about screaming when she is turned into a bigger body and she talks about not being able to keep her balance while walking, which is exactly what the progress report on Bobby says. That’s also why Bobby never screams. Riley died likely due to starvation when she swallowed the keys to the train.
Edit: also Riley’s body has a pinkish tint
She also says that she can’t move her fingers. Which if she was Bobby she would’ve been able too move them. And Riley’s body is much too small to be Bobby’s, because in the sketch Bobby looks much bigger around the same size as Dogday.
