Hey drewski, the reason why you aren't hitting the targets is because your rangefinder doesn't take account of the slope. The bullet only cares about the horizontal distance it travels, so if you shoot at 1000m with a 20º angle downward or upwards you would have to zero to 1000*cos(20)≈940m. Check out the Rifleman's rule for more info.

About your aim, you are shooting leaned to side, that causes the bullet go to the lean side. Draw a line downwards from center of your aim to your bottom of screen in your head and you will get the idea.
Also aiming up hill will affect bullet drop more.

Actually that is wrong.
The aiming line goes straight, the bullet drops by velocity (and wind etc, but consider now it is no-wind situation).
You zero your scope to distance so the bullet will first raise through your aiming line, fly above your aiming line and then drop to your aiming line and then drop more below it.
If you will lean or your scope is at all off-axis from vertical, your aiming is totally off not vertically but horizontally even more. You can't just imagine a line coming down from your crosshair, as bullet doesn't fly that way.
When you set your weapon off-axis (leaning, supporting on uneven object etc) to the right, your aiming crosshair is off-axis. If you set your aim on target, zero on target and shoot, the bullet will leave to the right, crossing the aiming line and fly top right direction, start to drop to bottom right direction, as the bullet trajectory was to top right from the aiming line.
The crosshair will show you the direction where the bullet will drop. That is why you want your crosshair top and bottom lines to be in vertical line. You can as well tilt the gun to the wind meaning you will fire the bullet in to the wind, that will then turn the bullet away from wind and you can hit the target. But it is far more easier to calculate the wind effect and set sight compensate for that, but in fast situations one does learn to tilt gun to wind in the same angle as the bullet is off by its central aiming line.

Does ARMA take wind into account? If so the wind up your slope as well as the wind up his slope is going to carry your round. Thermals (wind) have to be taken into consideration.

About the ballistics comment when aiming uphill, shouldn't maximum drop occur when rounds are traveling tangent to the Earth's surface (horizontal)? Basic physics says so. The force of gravity being perpendicular to the horizontal maximizes the cross product of bullet velocity and gravitational force (creates the most bullet drop) in reference of our viewing window (scope) when the round travels along the horizontal, therefore less drop occurring when aiming higher or lower. Not sure what other factors go into it, but the physics checks out.

Sniping on KOTH is a lot of fun on ARMA 3. I bought a .408 with the longest ranged scope in the game, so I take 1-2 click shots. It's amazing. Whats really fun though is when you have a ghillie suit, and go to one of the main roads that connects the AO to the enemy base, and sit there with a rocket launcher or any kind of explosives. (Note: This is not spawn camping because they can go any way they want around the road. I just chose that road because it is the most likely road to go across and it is a good distance away from their base)
Hey Drewski! If you shoot up or down the bullet goes high. Higher angle meaning, the higher the bullet POI will be (Because beeline is shorter). In real life you just take the beeline, instead of the distance and the reading is correct:-). No need for complex formulas:-P

Imagine your rifle is an ultralight fishing pole. Point it straight and level and it will flex downward. If you point it straight up or straight down it won't flex at all. The need to "hold over" decreases as the angle above or below horizontal increases. If you have 6" bullet drop at 500 yds at 90 degrees (horizontal) it will drop (generally) only 3" if the shot is at 45 degrees above or below horizontal. Learn this instinctively, using iron sights and a single shot rifle and you will have absolute mastery of the scope-dope-dial-and-hope gang. Don't get me wrong, dialing dope is a great American tradition, ask any weed dealer. It's nice to be able to plug in a few variables and get a working firing solution. It's also nice to get off a quick follow up shot on a squirrely target. Even nicer to be comfortable with shooting a running target at 300 yards. Take your fishing pole out shooting.

Damn, I miss sniping. Just went back this week and my account was wiped so gotta regrind if I want my beloved Lynx back. I used to set up on the peninsula on Opfor side in a house and pick off snipers on that hill in the beginning. Had a dual once where a couple of snipers I was killing on that hill flew over to take me out at close range. Dumbasses landed their chopper nearby so I knew they were coming and bailed from the house to the one behind. Killed the first one going into my sniping house and then stalked the other who had no idea where I was shooting from. Both are still buried on that peninsula I guess. Also had a 70+ kill game banging tower 4 mostly with APDS from that place. Good times.

you have to remember that being within 20 plus or minus of actual of taret range so compute a center of 10 on 0 top be a rounded body hit in arma 3 , arma 2 has a much narroweer beading on targets so to get your a plus or neg. 5 for slopes....

I'm a long time player of this game, starting out at Operation Flashpoint, but after some time playing in Arma 3, I noticed certain strange bullet physic's going on, and I believe that the game my simulate bullet drop, but it doesn't simulate accurate bullet "hit" detection, and I can't prove it, but I suspect it's using a nearestobject statement at the end of the object after it's bullet drop physic's is achieved.
I suspect this, because there have been multiple times when two enemy would be in close proximity to each other, and I would be using the M320 firing from anywhere inbetween 800 and 1.2, give or take, anything higher gets difficult for me, and the bullet would hit the guy I wasn't aiming for, which wasn't always the case, but the few times I noticed it happening caused me to question the physic's of the game, if they kinda got lazy on certain things, or just didn't know how to simulate correct bullet collision detection from long ranges. It's just a suspicion though, anyway, sorry for the long read!
oh, get back to me when a true sniper duel takes place at 2265- 2625m away.

if your scope is tilted, your zeroing will be off. gravity is why you need to zero in the first place, and when you tilt your scop/gun, gravity is not pulling straight downwards. physics ma friend :D

If you are ranged at 300m and its 370, it should be around thier shouders or torso. Thats odd... Range it for 400 and aim center mass. My DS taught me that, also helps that you have a scope and i had iron sights.
cool video, can i give a lil advice? when you spot a squad it would be advisable to always shoot the guys in ghillie suits 1st, always take out enemy snipers 1st as they have best chance to kill you.
B.I have a tendency to forget to make sure scopes are "zeroed" for each gun/round. I'm guessing the scope was setup for lower velocity or smaller rounds. Arma's projectiles are physics based afterall. HT could have messed with something server side too for all i know.

If arma's ballistics reflect real life , when you're shooting at a target up or downhill the bullet will land a little bit above where you place it so that may be why your shot missed at 7:20
the thing about balistiks if you aim at higher or lower elevation the bullet will fly higher the zeroing is for same elevation so a guy at 400 high up is actualy 300 from you at the same elevation thats usually why i use the map to get the semi correct distance if you dont belive me climb a 100m tower shoot straight down at the ground with 100m zeroing and it will land higher

OperatorDrewski hey man I'm not saying it's ideal but it's certainly possible as I've done it a few times. At that range all rifles have pretty much the same lethality and you don't even need a scope
When shooting at angles, your point of aim needs to be lower, regardless of uphill or downhill. If you are zeroed for 300 but then aim high you’re negating your dope. Zero for less and aim dead on or just zero for it exactly and aim low and you’ll be good to go.

Sheet, the MAR-10 is my go-to weapon for anything over 500m. I only play Exile, and on the server I play on, out of all the weapons the guy has available, I still only use the MAR....

Skyliniing on a mountain with a ghillisuit is not optimal. but epic shooting.
if you shoot uphill, aim low, if you shoot downhill, still aim low. if your weapon is canted to one side, compensate by aiming a bit to the other side.
Theres so many variables to be considered in every shot. Just saying..
distance 300 with aim at 370...the cool thing with the arma series is that its never been perfect. that you can break a neck or like stuff fails to work as it should. Thats what make the series awesome :)
Dude, sometimes the place you set the bipod is not perpendicular to the ground. So if you aim at the cross of the reticle, it could miss

If the range is 350, 450, 550 etc or above 50 just go to the next zeroing (at least that’s what works for me)
