- IV Insert Technique Tip: Avoid Vein Valves if You See Them (Vein Check)
When starting an IV on a patient's forearm, you want to be mindful of any visible valves.
Granted, most patients will not have a low enough body fat percentage to see valves, but if they do, you can usually spot them by a knotty or bumpy appearance along the veins, as you can in this patient's forearm veins.

Vein valves prevent blood from backing up. If you ever want to test a vein to see if a valve is present, you can occlude part of it, run your finger along it, and blood will not refill into the vein behind the valve.
You want to avoid valves as much as possible because it can be difficult to slide off the cannula if you hit a valve, causing you to start over or risk blowing the vein.

Yes but I personally never saw this in the lecture
I never knew that valves are visible or they affect IV !
I was just showing my son who’s a senior. I learned this when I was in middle school for some reason
My amazing medic partner taught me this trick when i was still a really green basic. Forever grateful for that tip.
I wish all patients had veins like that.
that guy has great veins
critical information👋🏻
Advance while flushing. Works great.
He shaved his hand for this video, what a man
Many thanks to Ben for always being a willing model for your edu vids lol love your content Sarah. Thank you for being so awesome!❤
This is why you ought to lie down to give your heart a less stressful time to circulate the blood - when needed.
What if a cannulla pushed through those valves?
I always wondered why I can make some veins disappear and others don’t. Great video, thanks!
Perfect explanation!
I love this channel I’m forever learning something
Thank you!
This helped me a lot to understand the vein valve.
God is great!!!!!
Gosh! What a education! Gracias Gracias. "Isa"
Thank you for this!
Thank you this was interesting. So, the valves act like diodes or relief valves.
Wow. So accurate.
Thanks for the useful information
I'm in love ❤ ohh.... those veins ❤❤❤❤
Very usefull information, thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙂👍
The more you know 😂 i didnt know we had little valves like this but it totally makes sense 😅
thank you for sharing this 👍🏽
Very educational! If in a unit that allows, get certified and use an ultrasound and walk the needle all the way in to the catheter hub before removing the needle.. then you don’t need to worry about threading through a valve! (: saves hard sticks many pokes!
Thanks
New information ⭐
Do you need to avoid valves all the way from insertion point to end of cannula though? It's not always possible so wondering if I can't avoid one where's the best place to hit the valve
So obvious, but for some reason I've never known this.
Very interesting
Awesome
Stay away from the “naughty” areas😅
Candular❤❤
Very intresting one ma'am 👏
I would love your advice for anyone who gets really light-headed at the thought of doing this. I'm a second year nursing student, and I have my skills check this semester on IV insertion. I'm trying to desensitize myself by watching videos but it never really goes away 😬
This is probably how we get our pulse within the circulatory system?
@@michaezell4607 not sure what you mean but pulse is felt from arteries not veins
Wow
In practice, out of perhaps the > 1000 IVs I've put up, I think I had issues with valves only several times. That was of course in my junior years as a med student, intern and junior doctor.
Woww 🤯
Wooow!
❤
It sure is difficult and not everyone can float the catheter through one. I avoid them like the plague 🤣
50% of the screen area is filled with text, links and buttons. It's unfortunate I couldn't follow
Hello. I'm sorry that RUclips's overlays obscured parts of the video. You can see a better view of vein valves on our IV mistakes to avoid video: ruclips.net/video/sndbXQN7M98/видео.html
My hand be like
Where are you from?! I hear 30% British and 70% southern.
Sweet potatoes have veins like that arm.
I hate when then go through the valve that's by the bend of my arm it hurts so bad.
If you don't put out merch with knotty (naughty) valves, you're not making good decisions
The truth is these are just a convenient excuse for people with poor IV skills. Unless you’re starting the IV in the wrong direction they offer no obstruction or resistance to the needle or catheter.
