The old 'false balance' bias - the idea that equal coverage ought to be given to all perspectives on a given issue, regardless of their relative merit. The evidence on MLMs doesn't suggest that the benefits outweigh the harms, or even that they are significant enough to be worth discussing. It's *reality* that's biased against the social and financial benefits of MLMs.

I have been with young living for 10 years and that has NEVER been the case. She is lying.
And new business owners sometimes do not turn a profit for a year or more. Commission based is a great opportunity.
It’s sad people think they have a few parties and talk to a few people and make $1000/month and call it “working their ass off”. It’s people like that, that give MLM a bad wrap because they think it’s a “quick” money maker.

Essential oils have been used for over 5000 years of recorded human history. I know what you mean… I can’t wait for this 5000 year stupidity trend of using essential oils to end.
And yeah Young living is one of the worst to buy from,. Have you compared the prices of Young living to Chinese prices? Wow 90% overpaying if you use young living versus the Chinese variety that is 90% toxic heavy metal syrup. Attended my first YL event a few weeks ago. The medical claims made by the rep hosting the class, along with the reps attending, were CRAZY! (YL can cure & prevent cancer for starters.) The hosting rep said when she started YL over a decade ago, she was ## pounds overweight and in poor health, that YL fixed all of her health issues. Not dogging on her but she looked to still be ## pounds overweight and throughout the night said she couldn’t eat gluten and also mentioned other health issues she had. Huh? I thought YL cured her ailments? I do believe there can be a time and place for EO’s but they are NOT the end all to be all! After my own sporadic experiences selling for MLM’s and being a customer since 1992, I FINALLY opened my eyes in 2018 and wised up. (I’m a slow learner. 😂) I just had to go to this event to see what kind of claims they would make. Didn’t purchase a thing.

This video is spot on. A few years ago I was a freelance writer for their marketing team, before I had any idea what YL was or that it was even an MLM. I did various projects for them for about a year (promo videos, mostly). When Gary passed, I was roped into attending his funeral. I left the funeral after about 2 hours of eulogies, songs, etc. (I was told it lasted about 5 hours). I sat through story after story of Gary communicating with animals, miracle healings, and his "saving people." I thought it was odd and that he was just a really eccentric guy, but then I attended the YL convention (again, for work). I don't want to hate on people who are into oils. I'm just saying that Gary and Mary Young weren't just selling snake oil-they worshiped it and encouraged others to as well, at the expense of thousands of dollars for the majority of their members.

For clarification greenwashing isn't just capitalizing on the demand for environmentally conscious products, it's when companies exaggerate how green their products are in order to get customers to pay a premium for products because they are making the customer think they are environmentally better when they really aren't. Its really messed up because it takes market share away from products that actually are environmentally conscious and do make impacts on recycling, energy and water use, etc. Sadly, this isn't only common in MLMs- examples of greenwashing are Keurig, H&M, Shein, Dawn Soap, etc. Sorry for the ranty comment this is just something I'm really passionate about lmao

“It takes 10,000 pounds of roses to produce one pound of rose oil.”
How can they even pretend to care about the environment?
Think of all the land, water, electricity, and gas (for transportation) it takes to make these oils. It’s a huge waste.
I’m not anti-essential oil. I think small amounts for aromatherapy can be great and I have some for that reason. But please, use real lemons not lemon oil. Some sage and rosemary leaves straight from the plant is a lot safer, cheaper, and more eco-friendly than the essential oil versions of these edible plants.
And if you like the smell of roses, please just plant some rose seeds or bouquets. Put a little vase in your kitchen. Looks nice, smells nice, supports local businesses, and is much better for the environment.
Not to mention that artificial scents are not inherently evil.

When I was listening to you talk I finally figured it out that’s exactly the reason why the MLM products are so outrageously priced they’re not really designed to be enticing to the average customer.
They can’t rope you in to sell the products as opposed to just the subscribe and save that a lot of companies off for today without the cost of the product being so high that the average person can’t afford for themselves unless they can also find 5 more people who also will purchase it.
So if you think about it these people are more like a group buy that goes to a wholesaler and says OK if we buy 100 of these we can get them for this price instead of what you sell to the general public.
Again the biggest point here being the brand partners or reps or Huns whatever you wanna call them they’re all just actually VIP customers or wholesale customers except with a ton of rules that wholesalers don’t have to follow bc once the product is there’s they can do what they want with it sell it for any price have any kind of sale etc.

But a really nice smelling blend is Geranium, clove and vanilla, I mix it in coconut oil as a carrier oil and use this as moisturizer, it smalls so nice. My husband loves this blend. But some people and sensitive to clove so it is best to use clove leaf oil because it’s not as sensitizing to the skin. I use clove bud because it does not bother me though. To be a brand partner and qualify to get commission on your sales you MUST have a minimum of 100 PV ( personal volume) of product you buy each month. Otherwise no commission or pay. You pay them to work for them. In Australia that equals about $180-$200 AU dollars a month to spend each month on products to qualify for your pay. Also you can’t make real money unless you recruit sellers under you who all spend 100 P.V each basically you make all your money from your downlines purchases plus add in a few customers here and there. ( most customers are the brand reps). In AU it is as above 👆

This was a fascinating video, because I know several people who were in Young Living for several years, including my cousin and my sister (she's probably a whole horror story of her own). But my cousin started selling it, was completely sold on the snake oil, because she had young sons with lots of health issues, and went full-on into essential oils to "help them." My sister definitely bought it for a while (I don't think she ever sold it) and she still uses the Thieves cleaner for everything. She gifted me a bottle of it once, and while it smells nice, I'm not sure if I believe it cleans better than my Clorox. She also gave me a bottle of peppermint oil once when I had a horrible chest cold. I didn't know I was supposed to dilute it. It didn't irritate my skin, but my cat went berserk over the smell and tried to eat my chest. 🤣 I have no idea if my cousin still sells YL or not, but my sister has moved on to using Lemongrass.

Found this late - but there's catharsis in watching this. Years ago someone invited me to a "party" that I thought was about our friendship and meeting their family but it turned out to be an expo of sorts where outlandish claims were made that oil cured a participant's cancer and some scanning machine would detect what oils I physically needed. I was struggling with my own health issues but I refused to believe tossing money down a well to purchase magic juice would cure what I struggled with. That person is no longer my friend and seemed EXTREMELY angry I disbelieved YL's claims then, telling me when I looked up Gary Young's past that those are paid propaganda pieces from YL's enemies. Given that you are anti MLM it's clear you are not one of those competing oil company 'enemies.' So, thank you for affirming what I always sensed about YL...

Then another rep said to filter fluoride out of kids’ water. I told her my degree was in dental hygiene and why it was a bad idea. She brushed me off, so I never went back. I will say that I diffused a blend of oils that got rid of my months-long cough overnight. The reps tried to warn against using any oils but theirs since they were the only “certified pure” oils and only their diffuser actually worked. 🤦🏻‍♀️

It costs about $250 AUD for 5 mls on Rose EO. However, you should look up the story of how the founders of both LY and doTerra were mates, then had a fight, parted ways and make their own companies. Their businesses were founded due to an argument between the two. Keep your "bad energy"!! Pfft!!

I looked it up and found that from Quarter 1 2021 to Quarter 2 2021, Young Living went from about 58 Royal Crown Diamonds, the highest rank, down to 39 Royal Crown Diamonds. That means 33% of the the highest rank lost rank, some lost two ranks, down to Diamond. I’m certain they lost even more in Quarter 3 2021, however, they stopped reporting their numbers. In Quarter 3 2021 is when they launched their new website and new comp plan and they lost a ton of members. I think so many people lost rank that Young Living is embarrassed to publish it, although they have been reporting these numbers for at least 10 years. It’s interesting that they just now chose not to publish it. Something is definitely going on behind the scenes.

Interesting. I think it’s much more common knowledge that Gary Young had a checkered past, to put it mildly. Additionally, with the onset of COVID-19, I saw people touting essential oils as cures for or protections against it. Undoubtedly, these preposterous claims made essential oils easy joke targets and may have given YL a bad reputation within the company as well as without. Unable to recruit new downlines or sell products, people would have wanted to get out. That’s my theory anyway. I could be off base, but we all know these MLMs cannot sustain themselves. See LLR. I hope those former home office employees get to watch Deanna and Mark hauled out by police/federal agents from that restaurant across the street lol.

I do not now nor have I ever sold YL or any other products. That said, I struggle with supporting them as a company, but some of their products DO make the most sense for me personally. First & foremost, their foaming soap is the ONLY soap I can use without my skin bleeding. (Long story.) That alone makes it worth every cent. Then there's their Thieves cleaner - it works beyond well and bonus, it doesn't stink! It smells nice and unlike most cleaners it doesn't trigger my migraines or stink the place up. It's also safe for kids & pets to be around and we have a cat who has to walk on the floors after we clean them (and has been known to counter-surf despite our best efforts!) so that's important to us. I know of no other alternatives that make sense for me specifically. Finding those two YL products has been a literal blessing for me. It's hard to be in that position.

I was a “member” for the last 4 ish years. I truly did like the products. I didn’t think they cured anything, I just enjoyed mixing and matching scents. I like their hand soap refills. I had a different full time job and made a tiny fraction in the beginning by adding people “under” me.
    But.
For the last few months I had various red flags pop up about their values. For one, the new terms of service I had to accept. It literally laid out that we can post against BLM, political posts and that members can post all the religious BS they want. It’s no secret that most YL members are Uber religious, white and hold extreme views on everything from home schooling, to conspiracy theories re: Covid to q anon. It’s so toxic.
Second red flag was I no longer wanted to support the people I was signed up under… for the exact above reasons. I didn’t want them making money off my purchases at all. Gross.
When it tried to delete my account, it took WEEKS. In the end, I had to submit, in writing, that I wished to leave the company. Run around!
There’s been so much drama surround YL lately with droves of huns leaving - some for modere. Hmmmm.

I was asked to go to a fun event to win great products and free gifts.
I left half way thru bc it was a sales meeting in learning techniques to get new members. I was extremely disappointed

It's not less than 1% of the company that makes it into each of the top 4 ranks. It's less than 0.1%. Less than 1% of the company makes it into each of the top 7 ranks, which is bad enough, but when you realize the top 6 ranks don't even add up to a full percentage point? In a ten rank system? Bruh.

I researched and found all this out about Gary Young a few years back because my mom got involved with Young Living (She’s been in at least 8 MLMs that I remember, and I haven’t spoken to her in 3 years… so there are probably more.) If I’m remembering from my research, the ‘degree’ he had was purchased from a fake front college and he never really went. He also draft dodged and went to Canada, where he then claimed that he was paralyzed and healed from that paralysis by using essential oils. Later in the mid 2000s he was fired from Young Living as an attempt by the board to get away from his negative reputation, but he allegedly showed up at the office with an ax and threatened everyone in the boardroom (including his wife) if they didn’t hire him back. They did end up hiring him back, but I believe that is around the time that some of the board left and ended up starting Dotara (although I may have that timeline wrong.)
This might not all be true, but it was stated in a couple different videos I watched when I was doing research into the company and also how horrible essential oils actually are for you. Either way, he’s a conman and a terrible person.

I get so annoyed when MLM reps say that the first level of their income disclosure statement isn't accurate because it includes people who "joined just for the discount." OK, so even your own company isn't willing to disclose how little (or how much) first ranks are making? That's probably because the amount is so little, it looks really bad! I refuse to believe a company isn't able to track that information. If those companies aren't transparent with their numbers, that's because it is intentional and purposeful.

@@valentinagadjaloff992 Food grade essential oils used as flavoring are consumed in very small amounts with products like candy and gum. The FDA does have a list called the GRAS list of oils that can be safely used in food, but essential oils are not ‘approved’ by the FDA for ingestion in any other way and should absolutely not be consumed in water, tea, capsules, or under the tongue. If an oil is food grade it will be labeled as such and a reputable company should also include instructions on how much to use. Essential oils not labeled as food grade used in aromatherapy are extremely concentrated and can cause serious problems when consumed. Quantity is everything. It doesn’t matter if something is natural or not, it can still harm and even kill you.

There are good parts of an mlm? 😜 When I was diagnosed with endometriosis I had a young living consultant tell me they had oils that would cure me. If only it were that easy.

Yeah my mother tried to say dragon time (seriously that's what they call this oil) would work and god bless her she was just trying to help but it was just as effective as taking tylenol. It didn't do nothing, but it didn't do much.

OMG, have a similar story, but the rep turned out to be a close friend from my past. She reached out to comfort me when I shared on social media about my fight with two insurance companies to get a surgery for one of my most painful pelvic conditions, and how the constant pain caused me to retire early from a career I loved. I was at my absolute lowest, so hearing from her meant a lot to me. However, on our second phone call she basically shamed me for using conventional medicine and touted the wonders of essential oils. She went into a spiel about YL, and I was immediately disheartened to think that someone who had been a dear friend for many years would exploit our relationship and my vulnerable state to pitch an MLM. It was disgusting. I told her that I was not interested as essential oils are in no way proven by any studies to cure illnesses (and may in fact be harmful to some people), but she later messaged me with information, asking me to reconsider and get back to her. The gall, the nerve, the sheer audacity. I blocked her on all social media after I saw that her blog, which had previously been devoted to clean eating and recipes, was full of YL essential oils garbage. Ughh. People can be so disappointing.

I used to purchase oils from YL. Now I'm trying some nonMLM oil companies because the oils do help me with meltdowns but not supporting an MLM for any reason even though my friends who are still in it are still great I just do not feel comfortable with it.

Actually, Rose Otto is an exception to what I've written below. They are about $50. more than a few other companies, but it is really expensive across the board to purchase Rose Otto.

I was told the reports against him were made by people who stood to gain from his ruin 🤦🏻‍♀️ kicking myself for believing it. While there are a couple products I truly did love, I can find substitutes elsewhere.

I'm just starting this and I *really* hope you touch on the fact that this company rakes in enough to send a full six horse hitch (which usually means 6 + several spare horses) across the country each year to compete in driving competitions, which wins them even _more_ money and runs a sort of amusement park ranch you can visit which they host shows at. It's an enormous, big-money operation for a friggin MLM. A lot of locals (hello from Utah) also view the whole operation as kind of a cult.
