- Creating the most detailed lake maps on the market is a significant undertaking and the people behind the labor-intensive job deserve heaps of praise.
2017 FLW Forrest Wood Cup Winner and current Major League Fishing pro, Justin Atkins knows the effort it takes to create industry-leading lake maps first hand. Justin served as a Humminbird LakeMaster Surveyor during his rise to the fishing big leagues, and he joins us in giving you a peek under the hood at his old job and what goes into the creation of the Humminbird LakeMaster lake maps.

As someone who has surveyed for LakeMaster in the north east i can honestly say it has made me a better angler and guide!
That video makes so much difference in my understanding of my Lakemaster mapping and Helix chart! Thanks, Dennis on Lake Austin.
Great video!
Great video guys!
Seems like HB has stopped coming out with new map cards? Would love to see more Virginia lakes mapped in HD
When mapping with AutoChart, which frequency would you recommend and why?
LakeMaster maps are nice, but last time I checked there was only one lake in all of Utah that has been mapped in HD on the LakeMaster card, and the other non HD lakes that are on the LakeMaster card are better than nothing, but when I have spotted checked them for accuracy using AutoChart Live it's amazing how much detail is not available on the LakeMaster card. With that being said, Humminbird has a great product with the addition of AutoChart Live, but I will never be able to map even a small percentage of the likes I like to fish.
Please get some more lakes on oregon there is like 15 lakes on there
Some people say its bad to run graph out of water that it will damage the transducer. But I see you using graph out of water, do you disconnect transducer or? Is it ok to run out of water?
Hi Taco Bob,
Thank you for contacting Humminbird on this matter.
Short periods of time running the transducer out of the water can be acceptable. We typically recommend if you require the unit for GPS while out of the water to turn Sonar Off within the unit to eliminate open air pinging of the transducer.
Please feel free to reply to this message if you should have further questions.
@@HumminbirdTV Thanks for the response!
Get a multi-beam echo sounder for hydrography!
Single beam echo sounders are not effective for bathymetric charts
I have re-done maps of lake that LAKEMASTER has missed a lot of data. I can see under water structure on google earth, but not on the chip of a very popular lake many bass tournaments are on . I guide on this lake and will not share. My map, My money went into this with 100's of hours.
Just a heads up- this chip is useless if the body of water hasn’t been mapped by hummingbird in “high definition “, so for me in nj I have one whole whopping lake- get with it humminbird. Waste of money
How about focusing on your loyal Canadian customers?
I'm convinced this Map Surveyor missed all my Western States lakes. Thank goodness for Auto Chart Live, the data is vastly different.
Meanwhile Lakemaster made dedicated chips just for Wisconsin and Minnesota cus we got too many lakes lol. "Suffering from Success" IRL I guess
I'm 54 and getting close to retirement, so I was looking into lake mapping and then I see this video and you are running a Crestliner which I just bought a brand new one last year. fish hawk 1650, they go anywhere.
Wow I wonder how many props n lower end these guys bust a year..
Good work LakeMaster
Great video! Thanks for the info, Justin!
I’d love to get involved with this. There are allot of smaller lakes in northern Illinois that have 0 charting done with lake master.
Great info..... Love my Lake Master map... Like you said you can find areas that you want to fish before you go to a lake....
I will never use anything but humminbird .
Our north eastern PA lakes and rivers freeze over and capture shallow fell trees, buoys, rocks the size of boulders. When spring comes all this breaks up and sometimes cause ice jams. The ice carries and plows this stuff along. This happens most often in the Delaware river. I can see you would have remap every spring when the thaw is complete. This is why I purchased Humminbird's Autochart Pro. I thumbs up BTW. This is good information.
Just purchased the lakemaster plus. This has been very informational. Quick questions. Have u surveyed the wolf river that runs to lake poygan, lake winnebago? And am I able to update this card or do I have to purchase a new one if I go to different states?
How do you become a lakemaster surveyor? Will be transitioning out of the military and would love to find out how to become a surveyor
Come survey NM lakes. There are 2 lakes that aren't the most fished.
I'd like to see some maps of Floridas west coast
That's a cool video!
Wow well done!
There are alot more lakes that need to mapped. Seems they always miss the one your looking for in your area!
