It's such a shame how she didn't take off as a singer. I bought a bunch of her albums back in the day. I enjoyed her music. This video got an insane amount of airplay in Canada when it was released. I was shocked it only charted in the top 80s on the country billboard charts. I still enjoy listening to her.
Back in the late 80's I had such a thing for her, I went to every concert I could and even kept a picture of her pinned to my old dashboard of my Bonneville and it made my girlfriend so jealous. I don't know why. I met her once at the state fair and I was a bumbling idiot.
John Thomas: That would be too cool!!! My wife and I have met a few singers but no one as famous as Kelly. I was hooked on her music from the first time I heard her sing. Just an amazing voice. Great talent is hard to find these days.
@voilaviolamh Kelly and her husband still do shows, they draw well, and her career continues w/o the hype and BS many other singers have going on, she has outlasted many other people
I agree this should have been a Number 1 song and launched her to Mega Stardom. The trouble is that Kelly Willis was not considered a so called "Radio Friendly" artist just like so many others which is total BS. How the Hell do they know that? You can't make a big move on the charts stuck in a very light rotation where few people even get to hear the song. That is assuming that the station added the single to the playlist. It was like pulling teeth to get that done. You would call up the radio station and they would come up ridiculous excuses for not playing a song or even adding a song to the playlist like "Well that song is too long, or that song is to short. Or that song is too Pop, or that song is too traditional Country. It was beyond absurd! Dj's and Music directors were obviously paid off to push certain artists and songs and to hold others back. It was and still is a totally screwed up system. If Kelly had gotten the degree of air-play she would have been huge. Just like my beloved Lari White and before that Holly Dunn both got screwed over big time by the industry, and more than once. Many artists got vast pushes and were privileged and allot of them that I had really liked initially, I grew to seriously resent because of it. Faith Hill was one of them that was ludicrously embraced. I mean her first two singles, were both cover records. Which was always another excuse for not playing a new or struggling artist. I liked Faith and all, but in no way did I ever think she was better then Lari White or Kelly Wilis. I'd take either of them over Faith every time. Never thought that her high exulted Hubby Tim McGraw was better than James House for example and the list goes on and on.
I spent a lot of time researching Kellyu--MCA spent a million dollars and 3 albums to launch her career, she got a very fair shake--the public just didn't take to her in a big way
Tony Brown and some top producers worked on Kelly's albums, they just didn't take radio by storm, and sales were not big, Kelly is very respected in the industry, she still performs and sells out clubs in Tx--she is doing well with Bruce her husband, I've seen her do shows since 91-she still is lovely and gracious to fans and always does a great show, very few artists today will last 20 plus years, I think she can be very proud of all she has done and will do--see her if you ever get the chance
I agree with all of the above statements. Early 90's the tide was changing. Had that song / video been released 3-4 years earlier, it would likely be considered a classic today and Kelly would be revered as a legend by more of the general public. It's all about timing and perception. That is still a great piece of songwriting, though and it was performed wonderfully.
Back in high school I had a photo of Kelly Willis stuck to the dashboard of my car, it was sometime in the early 1990’s . It always made my girlfriend at the time quite upset.
This is the song that got me into country so many years.ago. i love kelly willis and her twang... she had a great band behind her. Very tight... i have all your albums..
Kelly Willis and Lari White were my two great crushes of the 90's, and both were treated so unfairly by Country Radio. Both were denied the level of success and exposure they so justly deserved. Now my beloved Lari and also Holly Dunn are both gone and the younger generation is sleeping on them too. They have no idea who they were for the most part. All 3 need to be rediscovered. They are really missing the boat.
Maureen Lippincott: You can go on Amazon or EBay and look her up. She has a ton of CDs out and I bought almost all of them! ...Well, at least "copies of them" anyways. LOL.
Kelly still does shows in TX, check her FB page--she is active with her husband Bruce Robison--great team--they get out --next show April 14 in Houston
Baby you really did take a piece of my heart! Kelly Willis, you are down right awesome! Love your music and always will. Please come to Cleveland, Ohio soon.
Kelly Dodson: Me too. The way they dressed so classy and kept themselves back then as opposed to today...just no comparison. And the sounds that became famous were real talents not this crazy "I'm gettin' drunk and beatin' my wife " kinda thing like you hear today. LOL. Sorry, just had to throw a funny in there to emphasize my point. LOL.
Isn't that crazy! I love her version of "Angry All the Time" best. She's such a great storyteller in the same class as Willie Waylon Merle Johnny And Loretta. She is a first-class musician. I will always love her.
Kelton King - Really? I thought "Whatever way the wind blows" was her biggest hit.....the stuff you learn. I still think her version of "That's how I got to Memphis" is the best anyone ever did.
I had radio stations music directors actually outright tell me that they didn't like her voice. I thought "Are You Serious?" They used this as another idiotic excuse not to add her songs to the playlist. One of many.
Nashville totally blew it! She is a major talent who received nothing but excellent critical reviews. It's a waste and a shame that she didn't have more of a career! I always thought she looked like a young Grace Kelly combined with Belinda Carlisle.
MCA did 3 albums with her, they gave her a shot, and she didn't break out on radio, they dropped her, today it might be a different story--Kelly still has lots of fans, her shows still draw well, and she is doing well--I'm very thankful I've seen her and got to know her a little, her husband Bruce is also a great singer and songwriter
I still believe that both Kelly Willis and Lari White could have been two of the biggest female Country Stars of the 90's. Nothing against Shania or Deana Carter either, I loved them too. But Kelly and Lari had better voices and were every bit as talented. Neither had to take a back seat. And I seriously resented the likes of Jo Dee Messina. I didn't think she was anywhere near in the league of either Willis and White and got enormous push anyway. I don't know who was any more beautiful than Kelly and Lari where. Two of the best-looking women I have ever seen in my life, and two of the very finest voices too. Great song writers as well, not to mention electrifying live performers.
This single is from the album "Bang Bang , and peaked at #51.... Kelly would go on to receive an ACM nomination for New Female Vocalist in 1993....other nominees, Lari White and Faith Hill (w)
That was ACM nomination was a total farce as Kelly and Lari stood no chance against the insane push and preferential treatment that Faith got. I still prefer them both to Faith in every conceivable way. I grew to resent really Faith and Martinia McBride too. Martinia was great don't get me wrong, I was at one of her concerts in the late 90's and it was awesome, but better then Lari who I also saw live. No Way Hosa. Lari was my favorite by far, Kelly a close second. Loved them both so much. I just want more of the younger set to hear their awesome work and appreciate it. Lari passed away 6 years ago and was already largely forgotten before that. She deserves so much better. I desperately want her to be re-discovered.
You know, aside from her voice being a little twangy, she made some real good music. Sure, this music is 30 plus years old, but it's also timeless. Unfortunately, Nashville doesn't see it that way.
I loved the song " I know Better Now" from her self-titled 1993 album.. could have easily been a single...I need to re-order her catalogue because I had them mostly on cassette back then.
@evaohone That was one of the problems MCA had with her, her very private nature didn't mesh well with the very public marketing they had for her. She wanted to be seen as a musician, they wanted to make her a sex object.
Country sold out, long ago,...she didn't fit the ABC / Disney / record industry narrative. I hope she is well and happy. Many real people enjoyed her singing and performances.
she aint bad. but i got to admit, i like her husband, Bruce Robison, with his music better. and her brother inlaw Charlie Robison too. its just my personal thing. i aint dissing Kelly. she's good.
Good voice, but I'm not terribly fond of country music. And she doesn't seem to have a "country music" image. Maybe she should do some crossover stuff.
macsnafu: That's because she's been under rated and kinda put on a shelf like so many other awesome talents. She's got a lot of albums out but you never hear anything about that. Sad ain't it.
Shoulda been a bigger star. All the talent in the world.
It's such a shame how she didn't take off as a singer. I bought a bunch of her albums back in the day. I enjoyed her music. This video got an insane amount of airplay in Canada when it was released. I was shocked it only charted in the top 80s on the country billboard charts. I still enjoy listening to her.
she did took off as a singer .
@@antoniocavalli5474 Country Radio chose faith hill. the chose wrong,
She went off to be a hungry hippos champion
@noyb12345 why would you post an idiotic remark?
She’s on tour right now; seems she’s out performing much more since her divorce.
She has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard.
I am so glad I found this..... Kelly is Country Royalty. She deserves far more recognition. That voice is golden.
Kelly Willis embodies all that is good about this country.
Back in the late 80's I had such a thing for her, I went to every concert I could and even kept a picture of her pinned to my old dashboard of my Bonneville and it made my girlfriend so jealous. I don't know why. I met her once at the state fair and I was a bumbling idiot.
Met Kelly When She First Started. She's Such A Talent. Very Under Rated.
John Thomas: That would be too cool!!! My wife and I have met a few singers but no one as famous as Kelly. I was hooked on her music from the first time I heard her sing. Just an amazing voice. Great talent is hard to find these days.

Saw her live in a pub in Corpus Christi. She needed a cough drop. I didn’t have one. Beautiful songbird.
Absolutely awesome
Kelly is great and another great one
Number 51 on the charts? This should be a number 1. Or at least a top 10

I’ll be seeing her at the Opry in September
I saw her at a bar in Corpus Christi TX, ten feet away ❤️🇺🇸
No question. . .for us lovers of real country music. . .Kelly has it all. . .
Proof that awesome talent doesn't always make it super big.

what an awesome singer, and can't believe lesser talents get all the awards and recognition--she deserves a CMA award
Michael Smith Vince Gill is one of the rare cases of where talent won.
Was her career hurt by the tabloid stories that suggested she broke up Lyle Lovett's marriage to "America's Sweetheart" Julia Roberts?
no--that was long long ago--she has gone on and so has he
Did you check her out in the Tim Robbins movie Bob Roberts ?
Back in high school I had a photo of Kelly Willis stuck to the dashboard of my car, it was sometime in the early 1990’s . It always made my girlfriend at the time quite upset.
Beautiful, it's a shame that these kind of songs aren't the ones getting millions of views.
This is the song that got me into country so many years.ago. i love kelly willis and her twang... she had a great band behind her. Very tight... i have all your albums..
Miss you Kelly. I wish you would make a comeback to music. You've got a good voice.

I remember watching this video on CMT and loving it when I see was in high school... Such a underated singer.... She was and is amazing.
