- Hello everyone! Ever since my last budget builds video was released a few months ago, many of you have been asking for a science version of the video. With the release of the recent T6 Tholain ships (and the loss of the best T5U science ship in the game), I felt it was a good time to talk about this.
Like last time, I use my own rules for budget builds that are different from most others in the game. The premise here is for someone that enters the game at any point without any significant social interaction can still make these builds. The only social interaction required for these builds would be the bare minimum when using the Random TFO system to earn marks for the reputations -- that's it! No exchange, no C-Store, & no Fleet assets.
If you like friendly chatter about all aspects of the game, feel free to check out Star Trek Online on Facebook: / onlin. .

Thanks so much for this always wanted to try out Sci but was clueless on how to start. Great guide and really enjoying it
You're welcome. Feel free to look at the science section of the budget builds 2020 video for more up-to-date info (thanks to the community).
It's funny, I had the 31st Century ships sitting around for a while now and never did anything with them. I had found a starter budget torp build on Reddit and as I filled out the ship I thought to myself what would be the next logical budget build for this boat. This video was just what I was looking for. Great work man.
Thanks for this video. I wanted to try a Sci Tank on my KDF Sci-Jem'Hadar and this will help me out. I do have access to Temporal Multi-Mission Sci ship. My main alien sci is all offensive focused EPG/CNTRL and thus a bit squishy at times.
Yeah, Science ships...👍
Very informative and easy to follow. Ty
I hadn't thought about the Arrest trait. I'll try it instead of Emergency Response Team from the free T6 T'Pau ship.
As for Photonic Officer - do you think it's worth a slot on the T5U Orb Weaver? I wouldn't want to change the tac uni to sci, which leaves only one of the 2 sci stations available, but I can't quite convince myself to remove Resonance Beam 1 or Rift 2 for it.
I wouldn't suggest using PO on the T5U Orb Weaver. For exotic builds in my limited experience, I feel you need at least 6 science BO abilities to afford losing a seat for Photonic Officer. I see PO becoming good for EPG/Support builds that don't want to use Aux-to-Batt for BO cooldowns with sufficient BO abilities, but not this one.
Additionally, I feel you need at least a Tactical Team & at least one weapon enhancement ability (FAW, BO, CRF, CSV, THY, TS, etc.). You can't have both on this ship with its layout, so I would go with Tac in the LtCmdr Uni seat and forgo PO on that ship. Keep in mind, PO *would* work well on the T6 Tholian Iktomi, but not the T5U version.
@@CounterYoloGaming Thank you for confirming my own thoughts.
I know you don’t PVP, but trying to apply your knowledge of the game to be able to tank in PVP might prove a real challenge indeed. Maybe you can come up with a high end tank build for same.
Is this build still viable for players that can't afford the ships to get star ship traits you listed? Also, aside from a little change to the Boff seating, is there a way this can work on the free T5 science ship (Intrepid) that you can get just for leveling up?
A few of my friends and I are not able to buy ships. And one of them missed out on the T'Pau Scout ship. So, we are looking for a true budget build that doesn't need expensive EC ships, and traits for ships we can't get.
I have been working on a build that is similar. But it lacks a lot of the tanking ability yours has. I have managed 30k DPS in 1 run of ISA. But I was the highest damage dealer in that match. So I usually average about 17K. I am wanting to bump it up, and try to increase our ability to survive some.
Awesome video though. It has given me ideas. But it can get expensive to try, if you need to go to the exchange so much. Don't have R&D up yet.
Thanks for any help you can give,
Razar.
Actually, all of the starship traits listed here are earnable through the specializations in the game -- not through grinding starship mastery from T6 starships in the game. As thus, with enough time in the game on a character they are all attainable in the game on any character (as you get specialization points to spend as you gain more experience in the endgame). The point of my budget tank videos (both this science one and the beam tank one) is to give a workable option for builds without a need for anything from the exchange fleet nor C-Store. As for the R&D consoles, if you just grind your R&D to level 15 through the daily projects that cost little resources to do, you can get the science R&D trait and craft the Exotic Particle Field Exciter and the Conductive RCS Accelerator. You can craft those yourself without the need to buy from the exchange. No need to hurry on getting those missing R&D consoles -- the big thing for science builds is getting R&D Science to 15 for the insane space trait from it.
See my STO Academy links in the description for the starships you are talking about. They work ok, though you have to go into the survival traits -- as you don't have starship mastery nor a T5U not T6 ship's scaling HP as an extra buffer the other ships have in the game. These builds are still definitely workable as the game currently stands.
Secondary Shields?
2022, add 2 zeroes to that ec exchange price
Hello, I love your videos. Question: Is Aegis set any good these days?
The Aegis set isn't good anymore honestly -- I only use the Aegis set for visuals on a few characters where the ship looks cooler with that specific set's visuals. Back in the day it was great, but other reputation sets have outpaced what it offers.
**Deflector -- most reputation sets offer more meaningful stats than the Aegis here nowadays. I haven't checked to see if it is re-rollable, but basically the entire DPS community uses the Fleet Colony Deflector with that ColCrit modifier for more crit chance/severity when at high hull instead. sto.gamepedia.com/Fleet_Deflector_Array
**Engines -- back in the day, there were extremely few sources of Defense, so having a base defense bonus & a bonus to defense when moving was INSANE for it. Nowadays, there are plenty of sources for defense & a few traits that add it. For a straight 1-to-1, compare them to the Counter-Command engines (more defense) or the Competitive engines (more mobility to be able to avoid stuff more and get to other targets faster)
**Shields -- Covariant shields have fallen out of favor in STO honestly. Nowadays, you are looking for either regenerative shields (tanking/survival) or for resilient shields (extra % of damage stays on the shields instead of bleeding through to your hull. Most shields work as 90% of incoming damage goes to the shields and 10% to the hull, while resilient shields have 95% damage go to shields and only 5% bleeds to the hull).
The Sol Defense set from the Midnight mission is the budget set that has largely replaced the Aegis set honestly in common practice, and the 3-piece Competitive Rep (engines, warp core, & shields) offers you more, and its 3-piece resistance is BONUS damage resistance, which is better. Most federation DPS players will buy/put the Honored Dead starship trait on their starship to get any damage resistance they need in their build, negating the positives of the passive resistance you have on the Aegis deflector -- sto.gamepedia.com/Trait:_Honored_Dead

what about your space skills
Why not the polaron set from the gamma quad line mission Home
This build is an exotic-based build, not a polaron-based build. The torpedoes in the front all have their secondary effects scale with EPG, and the rear weapons give us 2 different clickies to enhance the build (the chronometric 3-piece gives us a 32% amp to exotic damage for a few seconds, and the delta rep 3-piece gives is the isokinetic cannon clickie to use). You are welcome to use the tactical console from the mission if you wish, but the cost to replace any of the other weapons on a 6-weapon starship is really high. However, on a 7-weapon science starship, I could see wanting to add the tactical console & torpedo for the reduction in torpedo firing modes to ensure the gravimetric torpedo can be up more often (though the extra CritD from the Discovery Legends rep torp/tac console combo is nice as well). [however, photonic officer + the arrest starship trait will already get you most of the way there for cooldowns]. True torpedo builds will want the 2-piece, and beam/cannon polaron builds will want the full 3-piece set as well (which is why it is included in both of my other budget builds on the channel).
@@CounterYoloGaming ah, sorry. someone the other day told me some (apparently) BS about polaron being boosted by epg. was just curious sorry for being a bother
@@jholland9850 No problem, you don't know unless you ask (or do trial/error to figure it out yourself). The normal polaron proc (that drains power from your target and gives you extra power) is enhanced by the drain skill -- so I'm guessing that is what that person was thinking about. EPG does enhance the damage from draining abilities, but I don't believe it affects the damage for standard polaron weaponry (and polaron's proc isn't a damage proc -- though it would enhance the damage from tetryon's shield drain proc). Keep in mind for any suggested polaron build today, no one really uses regular polarons anymore for endgame (piezo-polaron for survival, or gamma rep polaron & dominion polaron are the ones to use typically) -- as most of the player drain abilities have been quite gutted in the past few years, leaving mostly just their damage intact, and power levels isn't as much of a concern in modern STO as it was when the game launched.
Could you make a radation build video?
Eventually, but I haven't experimented enough with rad-boats to give a build video on that anytime in the near future. The exotic-based weapons was really stretching it when I put that on the channel (and still got some things wrong & neglected others in that video...). I have some higher priorities I need to finalize & release on the channel first.
You make great build and you tell nice what and why there is. I have question. Can you make samehow build for JH Vanguard Carrier beam build ? I love play carrier ship. hope sameday i can fly "tzenkethi tzen-tar dreadnought carrier" I think it is nice ship
I'm honestly not a fan of carrier builds, so it would have to be a very long time on the channel before I got around to them (I like science builds, and this video still came out 3 months after the popular budget beam builds, so that might help you with a timeline). The Tzen-tar is a bit better as a Torpedo boat in the game than a carrier for builds right now. For a beam-oriented carrier from the Promo Pack, I would go with the Enterprise-J instead (or the other faction variants depending on your character), as that starship still has 8 weapons alongside 2 hanger bays [which makes a beam build for a carrier feasible]. Most other carriers lose 1-2 weapon slots on other ships for having 2 hanger bays, which makes it difficult to balance between the damage methods. The dev's also want carriers to be mainly a "fun" damage option instead of an optimal one, which is why they heavily nerfed the Hur'q carrier traits & such after those came out and were topping the DPS charts for a while.
@@CounterYoloGaming I know but I am strange person and i like fly nice looking ship. I think a lot and look on lots of ship and now I think I will choose "Elachi Sheshar Intel Dreadnought Cruiser" That ship look great for me and it will work good with your " budget beam builds". Thanks for your work here. You make realy good work here and help people like me here :)
Just be careful in your decision for a Promo Pack Starship. They are the equivalent of $200+ to get with in-game currency. As thus, if you can consider this ship you are no longer in the realm for budget builds in the game. I'd advise starting to look on STO Reddit for the strong starships & traits for the playstyle you desire. I will probably make a video of a few theoretical best builds for those without budget constraints (I do, hence the theoretical) for each playstyle.
I don't deny that the Sheshar & the Elachi bridge look cool & are unique. However, from a statistical standpoint the Elachi Dreadnought Cruisers have slowly lagging behind many of the other ships available -- especially for its "promo pack" status alongside the other most expensive starships in the game (as one of the oldest T6 starships, you would expect that honestly as the devs don't upgrade the stats of older starships -- besides the T6 leveling stuff they are doing for Rise of Discovery). In this game though, the most optimal way or starship may not be the most fun for you to play. If looks is the most important (and just getting a passable build on that inferior starship), the Sheshar is an ok pick to choose. Otherwise, I would look at other ships in the game (especially from the C-Store). Just my warning to you.
