    Recast the kids! Seriously?! No way, I feel in love with them. How much older do you want their characters to be? Umm, have you seen the Harry Potter films!? Kids sprout quick. I honestly think recasting them would turn a lot of viewers off.

    Kids in Goonies swear quite a bit - I felt like the kids swearing was actually a throwback to Amblin rather than a departure. Now-a-days, if you see a kid swearing on a TV/movie, it's done for outlandish humor ("Look at the 5 year old dropping the F-bomb! blahahahaha") which is totally lame. Here, it felt like normal and natural - like, kids their age are going to swear, and they're not doing it for humor in this show, but for authenticity.
    Also, please god don't let the Duffer Brothers get sucked into Marvel/DC/Disney... I think it would be a terrible waste of talent.

      They should stick to the show. They're clearly invested in the idea. They wrote a 30 page document explaining what the upside down was and all its rules like why there's one monster etc. We know barely anything about it yet and there's more to be explored.

    I, too, was pleased that Steve didn't turn out to be an utter a-hole. I was pleasantly surprised that he genuinely cared about Nancy, was understanding, and proved himself to be a decent human being. He also got a cool moment; unleashing a flurry of hits on the monster.

    I just love those 'painted' posters à-la Indiana Jones / Goonies, it always brings up something eye catching and warm to me.

    • @crowleyswhitehorse
      @crowleyswhitehorse 8 лет назад

      Absolutely. When I saw it I thought surely it was done by Drew Struzan, the artist responsible for the original Indiana Jones and Goonies posters - along with Star Wars, Back to the Future, Blade Runner, First Blood and MANY others. In the 80s, if you saw a great, hand-painted film poster - there was an excellent chance it was a Struzan.
      Turns out it was done by an artist named Kyle Lambert - he cites Struzan as one of his primary inspirations for the work. Great stuff.

    I actually don't think it needs a timejump. I think they don't have to make a second season next year. They could wait 2-3 years and then the child actors will be teenagers anyway. They already said in interviews that the second season would be more like a sequel series. So this is more like an 8 hour movie and you don't make movie sequels the next year.

    • @e84fresh
      @e84fresh 8 лет назад +4

    I really love what you pointed out with Steve. When I started this show I positively loved it but the one of the things that I was slightly disappointed with was that Nancy's 'love interests' as you could say were unfolding as one of the most tiring stereotypes.
    (Spoilers) We had Steve - the obnoxious 'bad' boy jock who was most likely only fueled by lust and would later be revealed to be an asshole. Then we had Jonathan - the angsty but sweet, misunderstood loner who would be the one Nancy would end up with.
    That specific trope had always been so irritating to me and I was so positive that by the end of the show, Steve, in a fit of obnoxious fury, would die either by his own stupidity or at the hands of the monster. But then, surprisingly, he didn't. He told off his friends for being assholes, admitted he was being one as well, tried to make amends with Jonathan, and when given a chance to escape from death, he went back and saved both Nancy and Jonathan.
    Then to top it all off, he and Nancy actually ended up together and I loved every bit of it. It was just so refreshing that they turned that trope upside-down. I really hope if they get a second season that they won't turn Nancy, Steve, and Jonathan into an angsty love triangle or break Nancy and Steve up. It was just really refreshing to see that the athletic, popular guy didn't also have to be the bad guy, ya know?

    Christ. how much diversity and multiculturalism do you expect in a tiny American town in the 80's? Your review is brilliant, but this obsession with having as many different colors on the screen as possible is just illogical sometimes.

      WTF xD Spoiler alert : black people EXISTED in the 80s! Just...Just like other people of color!! Hard to believe right ???
      And they existed much more than one black kid in the whole town but I guess you watched so many tv shows without any diversity that are just an endless realm of white faces, so how would you know.

    • @GrimmGhost

      The commit was more of a response about the opinion that this show morally needed more diversity.

    I loved everything about this show! The simplicity, writing, cast, etc. The thing I liked the most though is how good the child actors were and how relatable they are. I was genuinely surprised when they cursed because it rarely happens in media (the only one I can think of is Stand By Me), which as a 14 year old I don't entirely get because it happens so often. I really appreciated how they actually had the kids act like kids instead of darling angels who never do anything wrong.

    I think you nailed it in terms of the length of the season. 8 episodes definitely allowed brisk pacing, the tightly weaved storylines, there was very little downtime in the story, everything came together beautifully. This is easily my best piece of entertainment this year. That includes tv, movies and games. Out of nowhere it came for me and utterly blew me away and I'm so happy it did yet utterly sad I can't experience it freshly again. But now I get to re-experience it again and look for the things I missed the first time around :) .

    Theory WITH spoilers:
    I believe Eleven created the Upside Down. The Hawkins Lab was unsure about the portal, as was Dr. Brenner. They were experimenting w/ remote viewing, and Eleven's fears and powers led her to unintentionally populate and then open the upside down. She said as much. The monster was a conjuring of her nightmares, and once the gate was open it could "reproduce" both itself and the world w/ hosts such as Barbara and Will. At least that's what made sense to me.

    SPOILERS!!!!
    Just finished watching. I loved it. even though i could have done without and episode or two, the payoff was sooo worth it. It ended up great! Regarding a sequel.... hmm. Having just finished watching it, do we want a direct sequel? I felt the story was pretty self contained and everything wrapped up nicely. yes, it definitely left it open for a sequel, but i would rather the show/movie comes bac, with the same 80's style, but maybe tackling a different mystery. having the sequel take place years later, with eleven coming back all warrior princess just feels so cliche and meh to me. maybe i could be wrong and they do something totally different that blows me away, but as of i right now, i feel pretty satisfied with how it ended.

    This is probably my new favorite Netflix series.
    I'm going to make one complaint though and this is a real nitpick.
    I feel the designs for the alien was a little generic and also they didn't really do anything creative for the lab. I hope as this show progresses and we get more creatures, they think a bit more creative and come up with something we've not really seen before.

    You're brilliant and dead on, as always! It is a rare pleasure to hear your timely and insightful reviews, especially when you so easily draw from your vast wealth of entertainment knowledge. I love this show, yet have only just watched the first 4 episodes, and I get those same tingles that the first season of The X Files induced. I will come back to your review after I finish watching the rest of this spellbinding series.
    So now having watched Stranger Things in its entirety, I am in complete agreement with your analysis. I would like to add that it evoked an emotional response in me on many levels. This show hit all the spots. I hope to see more work like it soon.

    Absolutely loved Stranger Things, just finished it and I loved every minute of it. I loved the old school feel to it, though I did get more of a 70s feel from it haha. I loved all the little homages to 70/80s pop culture, like the movie posters, technology and even some of the hairstyles and attitudes that existed back then. However Grace, you should be a little more careful with how you explain some things, I noticed you calling Eleven's powers telepathy, but it was more Psychokinesis than that. I also think you're opinion that things should be made more diverse isn't necessarily bad but you don't need it in literally everything nowadays, in my opinion having the same diverse characters and patterns in movies and shows is starting to feel too contrived and patronising. But Stranger Things doesn't go overboard with this, which I'm pleased about. Without a doubt one of the best shows I've seen so far, I hope it continues to be great and can't wait for season 2.

    I really enjoyed the 80s nostalgia; especially being old enough to remember when Ryder & Modine, were young. They did a great job of making so many of the characters relatable:)

    Finally watched this series and so amazing! I enjoyed this so much. Every character is captivating and the emotions are projected so well. I teared up when Eleven saved them. I want to see the follow up as Eleven as a Phoenix like they referred in the race with the bikes.

    Grace!!!! In case you haven't seen, this show is currently #16 on IMDB's list of the Top Rated TV shows!! It's only been out for 5 days, and yet it's right up there with Sherlock, True Detective, and the Sopranos!! I don't know how prestigious an IMDB list is, but that seems like a pretty huge accomplishment to me, kudos to the show!!

    Thank you so much for this review! I'm rewatching this again with my wife, it is so good. I agree with every single thing you said. My only correction is (don't be mad lol) you were using telepathy in place of telekinesis. Carrie had telekinetic powers.

    Great review. Good point for it being a new kind of thing paving the way possibly for more like it to come. You needed to mention how good the soundtrack more and how its 80ish theme was as good as an element of the series/movie as the acting, storytelling and direction and a 80s-loving driver through parts of the series. Grace you rock, big fan.

    Happy to see so many people from so many different walks of life connecting to this show. The acting was impeccable but I think the Duffers deserve some of the credit for that. It wasn't blind luck that they found such a perfectly put together cast. They're responsible for unifying them to each other and to the moments they are in and they obviously did a good job. While the atmosphere and 80's set was fantastically done, most reviews I've seen have focused on the characters and acting. I hope Season 2 (and a likely bigger budget) doesn't affect the focus on what makes this show successful.

  • @TomRipley7350

    The emotional heart of Stranger Things for me was Winona Ryder's quest to find her child. She has him back now and to repeat his absence in a second series would be a lazy retread. I also thought the point of the ending was that El sacrificed herself for her friends, knowing she wouldn't survive unleashing the power needed to kill the monster. I don't see how a second series would work. The nods to the 80s were brilliant one-off that will swiftly become tiresome.
    Grace is right. This is an eight hour film, and as is the case with most films, the sequel suffers in comparison.

    My only gripe was the special effects. I wish they would've gone full 80s style and done practical effects and makeup for the monster. It just would've fit the cinematography better imo. Show was really captivating though and well done

    • @cooltestify2
      @cooltestify2 8 лет назад

      a large portion of the effects in the show are practical effects, and they only opted for CG when they couldn't do it with practical effects

      Yeah, when the monster is stationary it is practical. When he is moving, it is cgi.

    Hi Grace! I have a question for you:
    Often I've heard you describe actors as being viable for TV but not movies, I was wondering what you meant? I understand that TV shows have smaller budgets, so often can't always afford top name actors, and I get why behind the camera talent would be different because of writing, vfx, etc, but for the most part, when I watch a TV show and an actor is believable, I don't understand why they wouldn't be considered for a movie. What are the differences between TV talent and movie talent?
    Hope you can answer, greetings from London, and have some emojis, free of charge!

      TV talent and movie actors have a different way of acting in believability. It is very hard to cross over from TV to movies there are many factors that go into it. 1. Popularity 2. Fan Base 3. Demand of talent 4. Timing 5. PR how well are you known to the public 6. Charisma- what does the audience find attractive about the actor, personality, looks, intelligence, image, trust factor 7. Talent- mostly if a person can truly act and they can become the role they are playing or they can create their name brand around popular and successful bodies of work they usually can cross from TV to film. 8. Money and Connection- its about who you know.

      Part 2
      Good Examples of Tv actors- Wyona Ryder, Johnnie Depp, Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Benedict Cumberbactch, etc..
      Actors who are struggling to cross from TV to film- Stephen Amel, Liam Hemsworth,Victoria Justice, Blake Lively, Chance Crawford, Jessica Biel etc....
      Many actors/actresses may have started out on television and even been on successful movie franchises but they are no Jamie Foxx, Will Smith, Bill Murray, Hugh Jackman, etc who are successful Hollywood Box office draws.. Hope that helps.

    • @karlwightman6344
      @karlwightman6344 8 лет назад

      Okay I see, so it's not so much about the actors ability to act then right? I mean obviously that's a factor, but it's not a hugely important one, all of these other things have to be at play too
      Thanks! :)
