Eis ai a historia de Umbabarauma
Um ponta de lança Africano
Um ponta de lança decidido
Umbabarauma
I've been searching for this song for a year. I first heard this on MTV Internacional in the late 80's. It always stuck with me. Couldn't get it out of my head. Still sounds as good to me as it did when I first heard it.
I have been searching for this since 1989 when I saw it in an animation celebration film at a theatre. It’s been in my head since then! Amazing! Thanks for sharing this. Now I can die in peace lol
Feelings are mutual⁉️
Found circa 2024❤
@@douglascleiton7797 falou tudo!
I was four years old when I told my Mom about this song/music video that I saw on tv, back in like '89. Then it came on tv and I ran to tell her in the kitchen and she came in to watch it with me. In sense, I turned my Beloved Mother on to Jorge Ben. ❤️💙💚
I love this song, I´m not Brasilian but I support the selecao
This has to be my favourite song of all time ever
Jorge Ben is a genius. This was recorded circa 1975/1976.
This is one of those songs I've heard maybe one time, and it's been in my head for 25 years or so. Nice find.
This is my favourite video-the music, the colours, the feelings, the smiles, the bumps of goose, the LIFE . . .
A masterpiece.
Muito Obrigado, Jorge Ben
Really glad you liked it, here's a better copy!

I first saw the vid, and heard the song, at an animation festival reel I went to see in college, over 30 years ago. It made an ENORMOUS impression on me. Fast forward to later life as a DJ, and "Ponta de Lanca Africano" became the de facto "theme song" for my world-music shows. And I got to introduce my art-loving daughter to the video. Many thanks to Susan Young!
I also first saw the film and heard the song at an animation festival over 30 years ago. I was so happy to search for the animation yesterday, and find that I could watch it, for the first time in decades! Thank you Susan Young for the wonderful animation, and for introducing me to Jorge Ben!
Haven’t seen this video in decades! Peace.
I Waited for this song,...
until i could think of this title,....twenty years!!!!
Thanks Luakabopper for posting this grooving hypnotic Brazilo-rock song, with sensual harmonies and vocals and icy, almost new wave keyboards.
Umbabarauma homem gol !
Salve Jorge !
💛💛💛💛💛💛
I remember seeing this on PBS as a child. That was a long time ago. Thanks for posting...those feel good times are long gone.
Wow; I haven't seen this in like 23 years or so . . . I remember it used to get played on VH-1's "New Visions" program, late Sunday nights.
My All-Time Favourite Video Accompanying A Song . . .
Absolutely brilliant work of art.
Bravo !! Bravo !!
As I understand it, David Byrne made this video for MTV.
Salve Jorge! ❤
I'm hooked on it
first saw this in the 80's at an animation festival at the Coolidge Corner theatre in Brookline Ma, it took up residence in my head and never left. glad to have found it again.
Espetacular!!!
Imagem e Canção!!!
Uma Obra de Arte!
love this. discovered it an an animation festival.
Wow!I didn't know that it's Jorge Ben's song )) I listened to Soulfly ))
Take me back boa muzik
Saya suka lagu ini🤗😁👏🙋♂️👍
Maior Artista da MPB ! Genio
Classic 😊
Damn if that ain't the best guitar sound ever.
I loved Beliza Tropicale - Various Artists. What a way to get you feet wet with Brasilian Music. Ending with "Terra" by Caetano Veloso is a high note. Opening it with this one is another.
soulfly tribe!!!
Yes!!!
Was just about to write this 😂
David Byrne produced the "Brazil Classic" compilation it was eventually on, but he didn't produce the song. Track is from 1976. I feel like I first heard/saw at least a variation of this video on the old HBO Video Jukebox back in the early, early 1980s. Don't remember it on VH-1 from '89 though. Either way - this slaps as the kids like to say!

I first saw this video in the late 80s too...thanks for uploading!
Learned of this from David Byrne How Music Works
great harmonies.
Great music. Unfortunately he have just had trash music here in Brazil and U.S.A.
Thank´s Jorge Ben , The Platters, The Manhattan and others.
Bom dia Jorge Ben Jor muita saúde Hermes trimegistro menino 👦 👦
Olha o meme pronto no dia 8 de julho de 2024:8 - 1x7:8
FODA!!!!!!!!!!!
Does anyone plan on uploading David Byrne’s compilation A LUAKA BOP, on which this song appears? It’s a great album, although, as has been pointed out, Byrne certainly didn’t produce all the music on it; rather, he brought it together to produce the album itself. It’s more than worth a listen, though..
Anybody speak Portuguese and can translate??? I've always wondered since I'd seen this in the late 80's. Magnificent track, just spectacular
I believe umbabaraumba is something like "c'mon let's go" and this case its being said to the goalie at a football (soccer) match. That's all I got. Listened to this fantastic album a lot 20 yrs ago.
Lucy Foster Nope! "Umbabarauma" is the name of the fictional African striker the song is about...
ponta de lanca africano
umbabarauma goal man
play ball play ball corocondo
play ball play ball ball player
jump, jump, fall, get up, go up, get down
kick, open a hole, thrill and give thanks
see how the whole city empties out

this is the story of umbabarauma
an african point man
a point man whose mind is made up
umbabarauma
It's hard to translate it literally. Brazilian nicknames often describe thea person's physical or habitual characteristics, and "Umbabarauma" is slang for "dribbling the ball past all opponents to reach the goal". It's a celebration of an Afro-Brasilian soccer player from the favela-a sort of soccer superhero, like what Rocky was to boxing in the U.S.: the iconic sports underdog who rises to the top.
morganfitzp wow, that's the best explanation ever. Parabens!
Soulfly brought me here!!!
Same!!! It didn’t disappoint!!
Was looking for Soulfly comments lol
Jorge produced that!
LOL! I remember watching this on VH1 long time ago
oh we knew he would have danced in Brasil... ;)
bellissimooooooooooooooooooooooooo pezzo
NOT produced by David Byrne but by Marco Mazzola.
"It was later included on David Byrne's 1989 compilation Brazil Classics Beleza Tropical, prompting rotation of a video for the track on VH-1."
soulfly tribe!
SOULFLY! -Soulfly! SOULFLY! -Soulfly!
Yes!!! Woooo
Hell yeah 🤙
Jorge Ben 2022 🇧🇷
Great song, but one note. Not produced by David Byrne. He did put it on a compilation record he assembled with some of his favorite Brazilian songs, but he did not produce this song.
Thanks for posting, though!
Mr K from the Franz lead me here too. How funky is this??
@phazez Maybe they mean the video is by David Byrne, not the song
this reminds me of an acid trip.
In the script for Good Will Hunting, this song is what they originally wanted to play over the opening credits, after a scene where Ben Affleck tells a story about his friend killing a cat with a hammer. I'm so glad they went the way they did, because this just would not fit that movie, hahaha.
JORGE
Byrne did not "produce" this music, he put together a compilation of songs.
That's it...
Yes, I agree. "Produced by David Byrne" gives us a completely distorted idea. The song was made many years before, without any help from Byrne. Jorge Ben has an impressive discography, specially the 60 & 70s section, many years before the Luaka Bop label even existed. What i'm curious about is: who made this amazing animation video ?
Hi Germano, I'm Susan Young, I directed the animation.
David commissioned me to promote the album in '89. Here's a link to a documentary we made about the project:
www.susanyounganimation.com/shortfilms/belezadocu.html
and the film is on my website here, better quality: www.susanyounganimation.com/shortfilms/beleza.html
Susan Young Ms.Young I'm a huge fan of your animation style is it possible to use some for a project under creative commons
Hi Brandon
Thanks, and that should be fine, but I'd need to know more about what you would like to do in the project in order to make sure its the right kind of CC licence, and that David Byrne is also ok about it re: licence, if you mean this Beleza film?
If you want to correspond further, please email me on:

Hey Susan Young, you did an amazingly good job on this animation. I have loved it ever since it first came out. Well done. Thanks.
This video makes me want LSD
this was NOT produced by David Byrne!
it was recorded at '76... at this time Byrne was only a guy with a nice band.
Jorge Ben-''Umbabarauma''.
I like the original & David Byrne. The skip/splices in this RUclips edit or hard on the ears.
Who is here after listening to Soulfly covering this.
🤙😄
23 sec gap
@phazez from what I understand, he bankrolled the animation - I could be wrong though.
alex kapranos led me to this
