panacealand: "The baggage which can be..."
    That's quite a generous policy!!
It makes traveling by train even more attractive.
I'll definitely try that some day.
    Thanks for the info.

Oh! And I wish I had video of an express going through a station it doesn't stop at. I jumped out of my seat as I waited in the station for the "local" Shinkansen when an express blew through. :D

The baggage which can be brought for free into the Shinkansen.
The total size of the height, width and height is within 250 centimeters. Length of one side is within 2 meters. The weight of one baggage is within 30 kilograms and up to two pieces of baggage.
When your bicycle is a folding bicycle, you have to fold it up and have to put it into a "bicycle transportation bag". In each case, within the size limit. You can put the baggage behind the aftermost seat of each car.

Can a folding bicycle be brought in the train if it's in a case or a bag?
If so, will it cost extra?

Hello Catherine, True. It seems to be an army. The check of safety is the most important for them. It seems that there is the purpose which pass the information on to motorman more reliable by maintaining eye contact. Polite manner is good, but they are not the mass-produced robots of JR or military men. I do not so like this salutation. (^-^)>
