Gato Alquinta, ( unfortunaly deceased ) who is the vocalist of the group , of this video, he said, that the lyrics of this song, its was based on a news history appear in a newspaper, that a poor homeless man and his dauther, those who's lived on the streets and sletp in the publics garden of Valparaiso city. The man had died of cold due to hyporthermia on that wiinter night while hugging his litlle dauther to give her warm. The news show a photo of the litlle girl aproximately 5 year-old cryng next to his father's body wich was covered with sheets of newspapers, how they did with peoples who died on public roads in those time. That photo, moved Gato Alquinta ( the vocalist ) very deep. For that reason, in part of the lyrics it tells ..." of the dauther of a man with glass eyes " .( glass eyes of peoples who died ) ...." and sealed paper on the skin" .. ...for the newspapers that they used for to cover her father deceased body.
This song it's not a poem from Pablo Neruda, it's a song dedicated to who ever child, the girl Will grow up and sufer but it's part of life. My English its not so good.
The autor is Gato Alquinta!

They are called Los Jaivas, a name coming from the pronunciation of their original name The High Bass.
Please continue reacting to this group, but my recommendation is that you listen to the official studio versions (with all the original members)
I am from Chile and this band is very old and does not have an updated YT channel, the old live performances have poor image and sound quality.
Contemporary live performances do not feature deceased original members (vocalist/guitarist & drummer)

This song is from 1972 so it is one of the first songs that became really well known by Los Jaivas, after they change their style from the classic young latin band singing boleros and became a rock band, mixing latin folk and rock.
In this case, the lyrics were much more simple, just telling a story of a little girl. The lyrics of the song are kind of a poem, so it is not very direct and the meanings produced a lot of discussion. Some say it was the story of a girl who lost his father, a girl which became a woman, a song to the vocalist's daughter, etc. What is magical is the development of the music, the instrumentation and the mistery of the lyrics.
For us in Chile it is a beautiful and lovely song. And a reference for the future prog rock and folk music.

I loved it honestly. I can appreciate their later prog music, as inventive and crazy as it is. But I really liked the immediacy of this song, and it had a beautiful melody!

The Jaivas are an atypical band for rock. They rescue all the autochthonous and native music of Chile (native to indigenous peoples) and other Latin American countries. They also include folklore (which is the musical mix of the native peoples with the music that the Spanish empire brought to Latin America); Finally, all this mixed with classic progressive rock, psychedelic rock and reminiscences of classical music (especially the pianist).

My Spanish is pretty limited but from what I can tell it's more or less a love song. The main verse is about taking a girl to the sea to look at the moon and create a lasting romantic memory (not a direct translation). The chorus I basically don't understand. It says "For the daughter of a man with crystal eyes and sealed paper skin" which I guess could be considered as mostly literal and imply the girl's father has died or is dying; lifeless glazed eyes and skin bandaged with paper. It could be mostly metaphorical and imply that her father is a thin skinned person with a limited view of the world; this type of father might be overly protective and thus an obstacle for the song to overcome. It could also be a phrase with specific social meaning, which is pretty common in Spanish and particularly annoying because of how localized they can end up being.
My guess would be the literal meaning because of the somewhat somber tone. There's also a statement about overcoming fear which supports the idea of a girl losing her support network; however the song uses metaphor to describe her eyes as honey, so IDK, take my thoughts with a grain of salt as they say.

Aunque sabía que en cierta parte no lo era, porque yo aún no nacía".
-PERO : Claudio Parra (tecladista de Los Jaivas) dijo que la canción nació buscando "ordenar" la forma en que hacían música, muy diferente a la improvisación a la que solían recurrir en variadas ocasiones.
-PERO: Mario Mutis (bajista) por su parte fue más categórico en su respuesta. "Nunca hablamos del significado de las canciones. Nadie va a saber jamás", finalizó.
Creo q es mas bien dejar al oyente a q hagan su propia interpretación de lo q quiere decir la letra.

En cuanto a la frase a la q se refiere : "For the daughter of a man with crystal eyes and sealed paper skin" lo q quiere decir o a lo q se refiere es a “Ojos de cristal” eran los lentes de él, “papel sellado en la piel” era el uniforme”
Mi interpretación es la de una niña q está en la fase de pubertad ( 1º parte de la canción , el sonido es casi el de una canción de niños ) ese momento en el q el cuerpo cambia (el miedo a lo q viene "ese lánguido temor que fue permanente temor" es la descripción contradictoria de emociones que nos ocurren en la pubertad . El sonido se vuelve mas alegre y energético , los sonidos se vuelven mas "adultos?" , la niña ha cambiado le espera una nueva vida ,diferente de la de ser niña , tanto física como emocionalmente , los miedos a ese cambio se quedan atrás . Para mi es como un himno a la mujer , a la vida , al cambio . (seguro q estoy rematadamente equivocado ) es una canción positiva .

Hi Mark, they keep the drums but in amoment the sinthesizer player change it for a " bombo leguero" and also the drummer play timpanis . I recommend you two live videos of Los Jaivas: "Corre que te pillo" from the Viña del Mar Festival (1983) and "Tarka y Ocarina" at Teatro Caupolican (1981). Those are great istrumental themes with the original members.

The original name of the band was in English: "High bass" pronunciation in English sounds like this: Crabs Jaibas or jaiba are crustaceans from the sea of Chile, that is, crabs. I mean, the translation of the band into English is "The crabs" which is what high bass sounds like to the ear in Spanish😂 Given that detail that the Chilean public said and wrote the crabs instead of High bass is that the group gives up and decides to adopt the popular name as it sounds and as it is written in Spanish😅

Its unclear the message, cause the lead singer: Gato Alquinta who composed it, never gave the inspiration to it. But there are theories. The song talks about a daughter suffering, and his father tells her, not to.worry because her sadness will stop one day. saying things like " from her chest will grow colors of love". Why she is sad, dosn't say but there are some clues; in the 1980's when some one died in the streets hit by a car,or also at that time Pinochet Dictatorshi; a body in the street was covered by newspapers until a Judge would arrive. On the other hand in an interview done in you tube to an actual member of the music group: Mario Mutis with Lokko says Gato Alquinta arrived by bus by the Libertad avenue, and arrived with the letter and a rythm (and the song was composed). That is why that in my opinion says in one part of the song "For the daughter of a man with crystal eyes and sealed paper on the skin.". My interpretation is that after seeing my fathers cristal eyes when he died, and the information given before. The songs talks about the spirit of dead dad telling her daughter, do not worry that even if he has died, some day in a future, she'll be able to reconcile her self and be happy again. It isn't at all a happy song.😢

@@mariaangelicabrunellsolar7086 I think you misunderstood. By rudimentary, I mean that the instrumentation takes a basic approach. That's all it needs to shine. I've heard songs go all over the place with their background music and end up being disjointed (which is why i don't like many hard rock or heavy metal songs).
I know the word "rudimentary" is sometimes said with a negative connotation, but that's not the case here. Sometimes less is more.

You know I am 50 years old , Inmunologist in Chile with family, and for one reason I started to see videos in youtube , politics and bullshit , sorry for the last , and apear Los Jaivas with reaction, I herd these music, even sing some songs but never take that relevance until know, when I realized that they were and are a great band.
