  • join me as i take the stage at the UK Drum Show. In this talk, i delve into the art of staying fully present while playing the drums, unlocking maximum quality and musical prowess. With a dash of humor, I hope this offers some profound insights into the inner workings of a drummer's mind. The thoughts that guide every drummer's hands (or not) are an often overlooked part of the chain. let me know in the comments if you've experienced something like this before yourself and if you wanna make it a part of your practice. all the best

This is the entire concept of mindfulness. Music as meditation is a beautiful and insightful approach. Thank you for this gift, Benny. ❤

Such valuable advice! I’ve been noticing my mind drift when I’m playing songs we’ve played in my band 100s of times and that’s when the energy and vibe of the song diminishes! Mindfulness in music! Love it Benny! Keep bringing us these valuable teachings 🙏🏻

It's not about drumming only, it's literally about everything in our lives! We should be conscious and mindful!

being present and in the moment is so importand for a lot of things but especially music which is essentially a converstaion. You have to listen to what the others are saying and respond.

i've noticed myself in this zone before, where every hit on every part of the instrument seems right..... feels right..... it's not super flashy or impressive to anyone, but you feel yourself locked into your instrument and your groove. it is a different kind of satisfaction, but it is very gratifying.
    well said, Mr Greb

Everyone who grew up playing computer games calls this being in the zone, but if you want to look it up psychologists call it a flow state, it's worth looking it up, as there are techniques to get there

Could you possibly share the new ones in full length? Share the new ones in full length? As some wise man said earlier, If you repeat something, you give it more value ;)

Fantastic point Benny! So true. That´s why I always have felt it is so important to feel comfortable at my seat when doing a gig. Every drum, cymbal etc etc is placed exactly where I want them to be, my monitor mix is where I want it to be, mics properly places etc etc so I also don´t have to be thinking about those things when performing...and at least those are things I can control, so I try to make my starting place as comfortable as it can be for me.

This is why mastering shuffles is so valuable to your drumming... each shuffle on each song has to have just the right 'lope', the right flow and down, up, and back beat..to do this you have to listen to each stroke and ghost note and relax... so you have to be really present... and this habit translates to other styles...just my 2 cents.....

Its important for your whole life. In Germany we call it "Achtsamkeit". Stay in the present. Feel the way you are walking, smell the nature, taste the meal. Everytime, stay in present.
Thanks Benny, this point is so important.

In my mind, what this comes down to is practice until you absolutely cannot play it wrong.
When I play a show, I like to be able to enjoy it and not listen to my inner drummer telling me what to do. I can only do that when I put the hours into learning the songs until I know them upside down and backwards.

I know this feeling very well, except in my case it goes like this: “ There is a two bar solo coming up - and I’m going to rush it. Oh no, I know I’m going to rush it, because I always rush it. It is going to be embarrassing and humiliating and I wish we didn’t have to play this song because I always screw it up and… oh no! Here is the solo AARRGGHH! Damn. I rushed it and it sound awful… I knew I’d do it, I just knew I would” 😡😡😡
