I also love how he instantly owned the decision both with the ref and with Nate, to make it more that he made the decision rather than Nate wanting out. Your fighter lost, you may as well help him save face rather than embarrass him further as others have done

Trevor Wittman is such a G, you can always feel the connection he has with his fighters.
I watched an older interview with him and he came off like a genuinely good guy. You can tell he's passionate about the sport and even more passionate about his fighters. A lot of coaches could learn a thing or 2 from him.
if coaches could go down in the hall of fame he should be the first one entered.

Huge props to Trevor Wittman for calling it, unlike the coach right before him that was trying to get his fighter killed. That's the kind of coach you want in your corner, one who's looking out for your best interest, not trying to get you back in an unwinnable fight for his own gain.

Trevor Whittman is the coach everyone needs. He makes a real impact on their training, tries to understand his fighters deeply and actually seems to care about their well being.
The contrast between Whitman’s decision to look out for his fighter and Tito screaming “SAY YES!! SAYY YESS!!” is nuts 😂
Care and duty take many forms. Part of the coach/support team's job is also to push the fighter through moments of adversity. A guy struggling might just need to be told to get his ass into gear and get up (look at Pereira and Leon Edward's coaches, for example). Possibly Tito is seeing his guy, on the verge of winning a fight, on the verge of advancing his career, about to quit and doesn't want him to miss his opportunity. All the fighter can feel is the immediate pain, but Tito is possibly looking out for his future. Whitman isn't wrong, either, it's just situationally different and he probably has a better insight into Marquadt's frame of mind.
They were both the right things to do for the situation.
I know you guys love to clown on tito however from everyone who was in that season and was interviewed, the guy was always there and always really helpful as a coach on TUF
The difference is that Nate was a seasoned veteran and Tito's fighter was inexperienced who wasn't injured but just not used to adversity.
in fairness whitman's guy was cutting crushed whereas tito's guy won one and lost one
Glad Trevor Whitman did that for Nate and didn’t hesitate to do so.

It's way smarter to quit than to get permanent brain damage or something broken. People hate it but it's not them fighting in there. Also guys get discouraged by the pressure and anxiety maybe. If you just imagine yourself doing it you understand quickly that it's one of the scariest hardest and bravest things you can do.

The part people need to know about the BJ PENN vs GSP fight was BJ talked so much shit leading up to fight about "I'm a Hawaiian warrior that won't stop, I'll die in the cage" "George is a quitter, he doesn't have the heart I do" ect... then when it came down to it, he got brutalized and 100% QUIT himself, he didn't go out on his shield, and was never the same again.
The more I know about BJ Penn, the lesser I think of him.

This was pretty interesting to see. It’s typically either 1 of 2 scenarios - either a young fighter realizes the path is not for him, or an old fighter realizes his path has come to an end. Or just an injury lol

@@jeffreylee5607 a bit rarer in mma than boxing for the mental to actually be enough. A lot of people understand it takes just one of anything, a punch, a kick, a takedown. They try to hang in to make their loss look more honorable and that they have a slim chance of just somehow winning.

It also seemed like on two occasions there were guys who were totally physically spent. Especially in the case of BJ Penn, who went on fighting long after that St. Pierre fight. He just took all he had to give to make it thru that fourth round.

That Leben one hurt my heart, man. He was one of my early favorites when I first started watching UFC and you just heard it in his voice. After the years of training, cutting weight, traveling, fighting, and punishment absorbed…he just had nothing left to give.
He was fun in the early days but he was a 1 trick pony who relied on his chin and head. Once fighters who can punch hard and get in quick figured him out, it was a wrap
That's what I heard as well, it was a resignation as much as a surrender... he wasn't going to win that fight.. wasn't going to be fighting on anymore main cards and was just at the end of the road
I heard him say in an interview he was on the toilet shitting his ass out until the second he had to make the walk for that fight.
Coaches that will immediately throw in the towel at the request of their fighters really deserve more appreciation.
It sucks that there's such a stigma about this, I know it can be a buzzkill at times but we've seen many cases of fighters taking rounds of unnecessary damage when they're already beaten (Tony vs Gaethje comes to mind), and that can compromise the rest of their career. It's a grey area to be sure because we dont want fighters just throwing in the towel any time things get tough, but when it's a legitimate time to do it people shouldn't call them a coward for it.

Absolutely. Magney VS Garry in 292 was like that. Magney refused to quit, but he took So. Much. Damage only because of all the smack talk before the fight. Now he's going to be recovering for months, all for a fight he wasn't even supposed to be in to begin with.
It's a very stupid stigma. Boxers quit all the time because their corners understand how detrimental excessive damage can be on a career. Case and point: Tony Ferguson post-Gaethje mauling.

People tend to judge harshly those who understand that in the moment they didn't have anything more left to fight and call it there. I respect every fighter that gets in the cage and fights putting his health on the line.

These are sad but honestly I have a lot of respect for these guys for the most part. It's not easy to go out on your shield, but it's also not easy to admit you've been bested and don't have a shot. I have no doubt that these guys only gave up because they felt they had absolutely nothing left to give. But they emptied the tank first and that's commendable, no shame in my eyes.

Seeing Chris Leben quit on the stool was very shocking because he very much embodied the 'never say die' fighter. But him quitting on the stool (no shame in that) was evident he didn't want to do this anymore, and true to his word it would also be his last MMA fight.
There is no shame in quitting on the stool but by quitting on the stool, you leave something behind mentally. Notice how EVERY single fighter in this video never looked the same after quitting? People need to understand the consequence of quitting as well because it could end careers. For someone like Leben and Nate, they were already at the end of their career so it was w/e but for someone like Max in the video who was young, it ended his career.
It is not as easy as "live to fight another day," it is more like "live and may never fight another day." It is a choice the fighter themselves need to decide because for most, it is the fork in the road.

Classic Herb dean there at the end. Letting the fight go as the fighter gets pummeled with no defense. Also kudos to Trevor man. Everytime I see that clip of him immediately calling it off as soon as the fighter said he's done, he calls it off immediately with no thoughts. You can try to encourage your fighter but should also know when to do that.

I love a good pep talk but i also have a lot of respect for those corners that didn’t hesitate when they said “im done”
I quit on the stool in my first fight, I was really young and fought this really rangey power striker and literally every shot he hit me with snapped my head back, rocked me bad and I remember blocking a head kick but it was so powerful it pushed me back a meter into the cage. I remember telling my coaches I'm done and they did a little convincing but once 10sec warning came in my coach said to the ref that he was stopping it, he told me afterwards that he was gonna stop it as soon as I said I was done but wanted to atleast give me the full minute to make sure I wasn't gonna regret that decision. I did for a while but honestly I trust my gut so if that's how I felt at the time that was right. (The opponents now 7-1 with 6ko and a couple belts, actually had a beer with the bloke at a fight show last night)

I remember the Leben fight all to well. He was one of my favorites at the time and saying that he was at the end of his career was an understatement. He got hit by a flying knee like 2 seconds into that fight and i was already suprised he made it to the end of that round. Thank god he understood his limits at that moment and called it, because Hall was going to sleep him BAD

I watched the Pettis v Tony fight live, he said he broke both his hands. It was the right call to make.
There was an incident in TUF where the fighter wanted to quit, but the corner convinced him to continue... he went on to win that fight. Cant remember the name nor what season it was though.
This does not undermine any fighter who throws in the towel. What if any of these guys suffered permanent damage because they were pressured to continue? They made the judgment call and called it quits, so we do not know.

I have simply stated a fact that I did see happen, on the ultimate fighter where a ... I belive a veteran(?) was very tired , he had taken damage after the first out of two rounds, but corner encouraged him to go back in there because they did see his opponent was tired too. The fighter went back in there, did his best and manage to submit (?) his opponent. He got extremly happy, got in to the house.
Urge you to actually try to read what people writing and not read what you think they are writing. As of now you fighting arguments that noone put forth.
I very much support early stoppage, good referees that knows what they are doing and long rest periods after one gets knocked out or is in a brawl where they take lots of punches to the head... So again please, read and try to understand what people say and dont jump to conclusions.

Mad respect for the fighters and coaches that know their limit and when to call it. I enjoy watching MMA, but no one wants to see someone just taking a beating when they have nothing left and are just cooked. It is always hard for me to watch when you see a fighter just done and the fight keeps going.

Sakuraba is a legend for just how he finished Royce. The dude was all heart. He would fight in open weight tournaments and lose brutally or win spectacularly. He would have been a pretty badass welterweight or maybe even lightweight, which I think they both didn't have in Pride. I am not sure especially because I don't remember if their weight classifications allign with the UFCs. Whatever, the dude would drink and smoke and was still able to gas out a Gracie and looked like he could still go a couple of rounds. Crazy mofo.
He actually ended up fighting Igor Vovchanchyn for a full 15 minute round after the Gracie fight.

@kenshiman90 he is probably my favorite fighter. the guy was insane. he went all out. he lost fights that he shouldn't have taken to begin with, but he was always dangerous, even when he was clearly disadvantaged. he drank and smoked like it's part of a healthy diet. it doesn't make sense that he was as good as he was. Legend, and he deserves way more respect than he is getting.

Honestly these guys should be applauded for knowing when to stop. And the coaches that don't hesitate to agree should be too. These guys risk so much and there's no reason to risk it if they don't have anything left

It shows a great coach to realize when the athlete can't go on, you call the fight. There is few things worse than losing a fight. One of those things is being forced to be there when you can't defend yourself against your will.
Saku is still my favorite fighter of all time. Not sure if that is a product of following the sport since 1995, but I never get tired of rewatching his highlights.

That Penn fight was weird. Never seen something like that from BJ the guy was just a true warrior. That said, he had it coming he was so over confident, and GSP was peak powers.

For those criticising Tito must've not known he was speaking from experience, he tapped to punches previously to Frank Shamrock and it lived in his mind constantly, when he told that guy he needed to continue or he was gonna hate himself forever he was trying to keep the guy from making the same mistake he did especially since Chuck that whole season was bringing up Tito tapping to punches
