- Rachel Reeves has insisted she was optimistic about the UK’s economic future as she attempted to persuade critics that there would be no return to austerity under Labour.
The Chancellor will address the Labour Party conference later on Monday as she attempts to strike a more upbeat tone following months of stressing the need to take “tough decisions” to deal with the legacy she inherited from the Tories.

But she faces a backlash from Labour’s union backers over her decision to strip winter fuel payments from millions of pensioners, with a conference showdown expected later this week.
Her speech comes with Labour still facing questions about “freebies” of clothing, holidays, concert tickets and football match hospitality accepted by Ms Reeves, Sir Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner.
Ahead of her keynote speech in Liverpool, the Chancellor said Labour would back investment to help the UK in the “global race” for the jobs and businesses of the future.
“There’s not going to be austerity under Labour,” she told Times Radio.
“Not only did it do huge damage to our public services, but it also did huge damage to our economy, because it choked off the investment that is needed to grow the economy.”
With her first Budget on October 30, Ms Reeves said her plan “will be about protecting living standards, fixing the National Health Service, and then, crucially, about rebuilding Britain”.
“Because we can’t keep cutting investment spending, which is what the previous Conservative government did, and that chokes off the private investment that is necessary to grow our economy.
“We need that infrastructure, the housing, the energy infrastructure, the digital infrastructure, the research labs.
“I want them here in Britain, there’s a global race on for some of the jobs and industries of the future, whether it’s in life sciences, low carbon energy or tech.”

Not once did they mention illegal imagration 😡
They are blind to it
but were you distracted for an hour? :P
Why should they when ppl like you bang on about it incessantly, yawn, yawn, bloody yawn!! 🥱😴😴🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱😴
Nor should they, because it doesn't exist. Every person on this planet has the right to claim asylum. If their claim is unsuccessful and they're not granted asylum, they're sent back to their country of origin. This is how countries with sane governments do things. It's how this government is starting to do things after the gimmicks and rhetoric of the racist Tories.
You want David Lammy for that one. He's foreign affairs minister. But then, you're not super clued up on how all this works right?
As it happens, they are looking into spec ops teams going to africa to eliminate the gangs setting up illegal crossings. Seems pretty productive to me. Just - the right wing media is more concerned getting in a tiz about Keirs choice of glasses 🤦
If you're upset about immigration, don't just wait for the talking heads to tell you things you want to hear. Do the research and you may be pleasantly surprised. Rachel simply didn't mention it because it's not her department. If Keir doesn't mention it in a speech of his own, then maybe you'd have cause to object. But this kind of knee jerk reactive commentary to something you dont like isn't helpful unless making poor voting decisions counts.
Go on Angela make sure he gets your good side, after all you've not paying for it , its a freeɓie.
She definitely looks and talks like Nanny Plumb from Ben & Holly's Little Kingdom so why doesn't she wave her magic wand to make everything better?
The Chancellor is giving a lot of ammunition to the opposition if Labour don't come through 😮
Why are people cheering for VAT on private schools. We’ll be going back to 35/40 in a class. Bad for our children and our country.
Only 7% of school age children will be affected by this. How do you calculate class sizes going up to 40? Are a bunch of monocle-wearing silver-arsed toffs going to materialise and start complaining about having to go to school with the poors?
She is obsessed with the Prime Minister to perilous levels
Why does she continue to p,edge huge amounts of money to foreigners while OUR people suffer. They’re no different from the Tories.
This Bridget Phillipson chick, the Education Minister who took thousands of pounds from a Labour donor to pay for her 40th birthday party(!) - I have a simple question. Why on earth can't she pay for her own birthday party like the rest of us peasants out here? Jeez, she earns around £150,000 a year so it's not as if she can't afford it. And exactly why do MPs think they are entitled to endless freebies in the first place?
Full of BS
BS.....best speech ?
@@malcolmstockbridge2569 only if you are gullible enough to believe it
Shocking clueless and greedy government
We want our money back. Love that.
i didnt think i could get that same uncanny valley uneasiness from an actual human but rachel reeves has pulled it off, that fake forced smile...
Looks like they are concentrating on Women again Please Mums don't send your Sons to War like last time
So she stands for working people, Not people who have worked and paid their dues and now retired
You'll all be fine don't worry 😘
Great speech hope he puts it into action if he wins
🤮🤮🤮
She shows support for women whilst Carole shows how nasty they can be.
Is this sheep or cow no its bulls"*t
Such a shame when people have to be pure nasty to get their opinion across.
not once you talked about what you will do to stop the boats coming in the the uk so talk about that.
Because it’s a non issue
David Lammy - foreign affairs minister. Learn the members of the cabinet and their jobs and you'll be able to direct your ire to the right places
7:34 sexism , imagine a man saying that about a woman ?!
Misandry is sadly rife in Labour, invisible to them. But no party has a clean slate after you dig enough
