Debussy Masques

  • Composed in July 1904 while staying in Jersey (UK), supposedly inspired by Watteau's Le Mezzetin, premiered on 18 February 1905 by Ricardo Viñes the Salle Pleyel. It was originally intended to be the first movement of the Suite Bergamesque; this was abandoned because of issues with publishers.
A Masque is a form of high brow entertainment, developed in Italy.
According to Marguerite Long, who had studied with Debussy: “I hear Masques - a tragedy for piano one might call it - as a sort of transparency of Debussy’s character… He was torn with poignant feelings which he preferred to mask with irony. The title Masques represents an ambiguity which the composer protested with all his might: “It is not the Italian comedy, it is the tragic expression of existence””
This piece is notable for the astonishing coda.
created, edited and mastered in Digital Performer 5.13, Ivory Italian piano (Synthogy). Clumsy me, there were several wrong notes, alas, so this replaces the previous upload.

Reminds me of nowadays music. It's incredible how composers of 1800 and even earlier may have composed in so many different styles that today are totally normal.

One thing that’s always amazed me about Debussy is how modern he sounds. His compositions and harmony never sound archaic or rehashed. I love how he’s all about mood and texture. His use of all different kinds of modes and scales is just brilliant. Such a distinct style and a true original. He can do something extremely abstract then suddenly switch to the most gorgeous sound in an instant. It never sounds too academic either, he mixes them all perfectly. I hear all kinds of sounds in this: lydian, whole tone, east asian pentatonic. The range of emotions he’s able to convey is astounding.

At the beginning it says "detache et rythme". Doesn't it sound like this artist is playing with the pedal the whole time? I would think the whole piece would be drier than the performer is playing it.
