  • Forward pass or backwards out of the hands? Knock on or knock back? Try or no try? Rugby league is no stranger to controversy with big moments in big games sometimes being decided by a 50/50 call by the referees. We will be ranking this list based on moments that occurred in a finals series, state of origin match, or grand final. Some of these calls are correct, some of these calls are wrong but we will let you be the judge!

This shows that Sterling is the most unbiased commentator. He always calls it spot on even when it is against his team.
Probably has a strong sense of justice after having to put up with Hartley making biased calls against Parramatta during his playing career.

Gee you parra supporters won't let it go will you. OK. Fact time. When Hartley stuffed the tackle count up manly put a bomb up near half way, got the ball back with 6 again and scored. How could he have engineered that. We also forget in that game manly was trailing 11-2 (remember only 3 points for a try then) and he sent manlys John Gray off. How's that for biased. Parramatta whinged the whole way through the 70's and they still whing to this day. The 75 semi against manly was a classic whinge fest ( Hartley wasn't a ref then). Every manly try was unfair according to Parramatta. They are the only team to have demanded to be awarded the title after the storms salary cap blow out.

As a Dragons supporter, let me just say, the Cowboys win in the 2015 GF was probably the most excited and the happiest I've ever been watching Rugby League in my whole life. No one, not even my Dragons, deserved a premiership more than Thurston's Cowboys after all the robbery you guys had been subjected to in the previous 3 seasons. The fact that Thurston, possibly the greatest player of all time, got to score the game winning field goal in golden point time was just the icing on the cake.

Against sharks nobody wants to talk about wrong calls in cowboys favour that resulted in them being in a position to score a try rather than defending with sharks attacking their line becasue they wee not as big mistakes. However they were still wrong calls and cowboys would not have been in the game if they had been correct. For those still arguing whether the 6 again decision and reversal was correct or not, it actually doesn't matter as the referee is not allowed in this situation to change his decision. Refer to the following from the NRL rule book:
Section 16. Duties of Referee and Touch Judges
Changing decision 9. The Referee judges on matters of fact and shall not
subsequently alter those judgments. He may cancel
any decision made if prior foul play of which he had

The 1999 Grand final penalty try is the right call. You can dress it up however you want but it doesn't change the fact that if you foul a player in the act of scoring a try and they do not ground the ball it is a penalty try. If Ainscough let's him ground the ball the conversion would have been from further out. Also don't forget Mundine being a glory hog and dropping the ball over the line with an unmarked Darren Tracey in support.

    10) If there was ever a place for a "professional error" (a full penalty would probably extend play), there it is.
    9) I don't know which is worse: The call, or getting sent off in an Origin match for straight-up referee abuse. He was not suspended but should've been banned at least 3-6 months, given the gravity of the situation and the fact that, IIRC, it was the first sending-off in years and it was straight-up referee abuse. Tallis actually captained the squad the next year, something which, under NO CIRCUMSTANCES, should've been allowed.
    8) I'm actually surprised the referee didn't finish off what I would actually believe a fixed match by sending off the captain for that last bit, even though the captain was right!
    7) Nope. That one's right. Did go forward on the ground, forward pass/knock on. No try. Probably on the list because that's three years in a row the Cowboys were done by the refs.
    6) Sending off, and you go upstairs. It's either a single penalty try or an 8-pointer. That's the ONLY controversy here. Blatant high shot to the head foul play to prevent the winning try. Since he did not ground the ball, there's no controversy here, just how long the other player gets banned for for that highly dangerous high-shot professional foul. Again, probably MONTHS on that suspension, especially given the nature of the foul and it's deliberate professional intent, but he walks -- no tribunal discipline.
    5) You have multiple problems here. The passer gets taken out late, but the ball is clearly two meters AT LEAST forward. But the camera shot makes it impossible to see whether the ball was tipped or what -- so the best call you probably get as stands is probably "Benefit of the Doubt" and the winning try stands.
    4) Unless one can see that hand in the back of the carry, it looks "poor carry". But if it's a strip, you have to have MAJOR QUESTIONS for the official, up to and including fixing the match. You DON'T let that situation go unexamined in a World Cup semifinal, even if the call is eventually right! So you're either right or you want England vs. Australia and some major questions have to be asked.
    3) That pass was at least four meters forward, but the problem was, it was touched -- what were the rules at the time in that situation? When does the violation occur for forward pass? It would appear the violation has already occurred, even though the ball is in the air when it is touched by the opposition.
    2) Was this ever decided whether it was a try on the touchdown or actually (for the foot and dangerous play) determined a penalty try? At least as of 2015, that's a penalty try under Law 9. You cannot legally kick the ball out of a player's hands under Law 9 -- the only question there being when that law was put in effect. If that was in effect here, it's a stone-cold penalty try.
    1) At least the second fixed match on this list, if not the third. For those who know American sports, especially of the era, this was like the offensive foul Michael Jordan committed for his sixth rigged championship in the NBA. They wanted to send this player off with another title, come how they can do it.

Number 7 isn’t a knock on mate, just about every pass is thrown in that direction and it’s play on

Michael Falkner you’ve just proven you know nothing by thinking that the ball has to bounce backwards. As long as the pass is backwards out of the hands originally it’s play on

The 1999 Dragons one is a textbook penalty try. I was there btw happened right in front of me. But no controversy it was clear.

6:16 Commentators are blind if they think that went anywhere than upfield off of his arm.
Moral of the story is: Don't make half baked late grabs at the ball, and you won't knock it on.
Only time the Cowboys truly got robbed was the 6 tackle debacle. Video ref even got the Foran call correct - no clear proof = call stands. Yeah he probably touched it, but there's no shot showing emperical proof his hand making contact, for all the clip shows he hit the back of JT's hand.
The Tonga no-try was a clear knock on. Tackler clearly grabbed Fifita's arm, never touched the ball & ya can't strip the ball without laying a finger on it - loose carry & pick up your socks mate, you done goofed up your teams star moment.
Aussies got absolutely robbed by the forward pass in the 4 Nations final - but listen - if you let your opponent literally carve you up so bad that none of the refs are anywhere near the play - you'll just have to accept their opinion that it looked back from the hand - which was all based on the gammy loop Jase hooked his arm in to pass it. Rules should be allowing forward pass reviews, but its so tricky with the camera angles, they'd literally need a spider cam and those cost more for each game than both teams wages - there simply isn't a budget for that technology.
The Inglis try is such a non event - only an oblivious retard thinks Farrah didn't intentionally play at the ball with his foot - that's a clear cut infringement and has been ever since Ridgey I think it was got cleaned out by some idiot heading in feet first at the ball.
    6 Again was just a debacle. 1 game - 1 referee thanks.

Of course, the Raiders were robbed. They were the best team on the field that night.
The chooks couldn’t score without their 14th player, Ben Cummins the clown.
The Rosters were handed two tries by the Santa Cummins Clause. First, the falcon of the trainer’s head. What was he doing on the field after two minutes from start of the game? Then the all-time joke of the 6-again rubbish call by the Cummins the clown.
Then chooks cry for sending Cronk off for tackling without the ball to prevent 100% try by big Papa which was wrongfully not awarded!
Anyway, no need to hide guys, the sun is up there and we all know the reality.

khalidep first of all the ball hitting the trainer was accidental and theres nothing anyone can do about that. Second of all how can u garrentee that papli wouldve score, he was metres away from the try line. Cronk legit tackled papli a millersecond before the ball and he was sin binned wrongfully . The raiders had all the ball even when roosters had 12 players on and couldnt score. The 6 again call came of raiders hand hence why the changed the call. And Roosters showed there championship qualities and scored of 1 chance they had. Raiders where not good enough and you wont talk about how the roosters defended really well that game but u will make exuses saying raiders where robbed. You can cry about it all you want but the Roosters are the reigning champs buddy
