10yrs on and this video is still helping folks!! Using this video, I made this exact repair a few days ago on my daughter's 2001. That sucker wasn't easy to get to, but after reinstallation, initial results were no more terribly grunting, moaning noise from inside the dash. Thanks Froggy!!
I had this sound for almost two years I knew it comes from this servo but I had no time to look down there and take it out. after seen this video I went to my car and take it off and fixed in less than 20 mins. I saved $350.

This was extremely helpful. mechanic quoted me $250 for parts and $110 for labor. followed your instructions and after 2 hours saved myself a nice chunk of change. I found taking pictures as i go and marking the positions of parts (as you mentioned) to be very helpful too.

I have been driving around all summer thinking I was going to have to replace whatever was keeping me from getting air to my face. One easy search, found your video and did exactly what you did and now my legs are no longer freezing and my face is nice and cool. Thank you so much! This is a design flaw in the part IMHO, if they had put the drive shaft yolk further up the shaft, this would never have happened. Thank you again!

Just did this on my 08 4Runner, but instead of using a vise and hammer, I just used a screwdriver. Vent control works perfect now! Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for the vid! In less than an hour i fixed my servo and saved a bunch of money and time that would have otherwise gone to the dealer. I just held the brass "yoke" on the motor with pliers and knocked the motor shaft enough to take up the slack.

The techs almost always get squeezed.

You can try Loctite or a good quality super glue to secure the brass bushing (cog)

Froggy I’ve been In the IS community for 10 years now and I have really enjoyed your content I know this video is really old but it still is extremely helpful. I took a different route with mine. I plastic welded the worm gear to the yoke and also added a dab of plastic weld to fill the hole that the worm gear chafed away at so it adds insurance to the fitment of the work gear. Cheers

froggy, this looks like the same blend door actuator on my 2006 Honda Pilot. I tried your repair and so far it works great. That flapping noise was driving me crazy. If the shaft collar slips later on I'll try super gluing it in place or as another person suggested below gluing the broken tab to the wall in front of the worm gear. Thanks for taking time to post this fix.
+Bruce Hashbarger Glad to help. Blend door actuator MOTORS are pretty generic. And how they slip a little plastic gear on, well, not the most "robust" assembly for something that is going to get used so often.

The one I fixed controls heat/cold. There are three servos under the dash passenger side. If you pull the glove box & maybe a panel you can see them and watch them move (or not move) and listen for normal noise (or abnormal noise )
Watch all the videos & start to take apart and diagnose. Make sure you "fix" the right one.

In my 2003 Lexus RX300, I had been getting a periodic grinding noise in the dash for years but never did anything about it. Recently my air mix stopped working and air would only come out of the dash board vents no matter what the setting. I was worried this might not work since my air mix had stopped working completely. But it worked! Air mix working again and no noise. I guess the worm gear had completely disengaged. Tightened it up as described in the video and it is fixed. One added tip, I added a small dab of locktight to the collar that holds the worm gear to hopefully keep it from moving again. Thanks!

Thanks for posting- this is much appreciated. Purchased a used Acura this week, I test drove 3 MDXs, all had this actuator problem. I was able to fix the noisy actuator quickly with your instructions, 1.5 hours going slowly start to finish. Would have been at least $500 I'm sure at a shop, DIY for free is much better!

FYI, i recommend people solder the key in place using fine tip and JB the back of the key.. Mine was not locked in place anymore,. would just spin..
Now i have face and floor lol.
Fixed this in my 2001 IS last night. Instead of shimming the worm gear, what I did was put a drop of gorilla glue and slid the worm gear on the shaft all the way onto the shaft. Now the worm gear is always engaged by the yoke and moves the other gears as it should.

Thank you very much for your video. I followed exactly your steps on 99-RX300 and fixed the moving gear on the motor shaft the same way. I added some glue to the shaft to reduce the possibility of its moving.
I really fought with the upper screw while removing (and installing) the air mix server. It is interesting which screwdriver you used?
I used the long very thin Phillips that bended a bit.

I have a couple dozen different size/length/etc. Mostly needed right length to get it in, sometime you can cut the handle short to get it in there.

You see that tab you broke off at @5:11? You can break that in half so it makes an "L" and super glue that to on the wall at the end of the worm gear and it won't move. At least for me it worked. This motor might be different than the servo that controls the "mode". Same car though.

This design has an eerie similarity to the range of Panasonic VCR's which employed a loading motor that did the loading and unloading of the tape around the video heads.The motor had a cog that was press-fitted to its shaft and this cog inserted into the worm wheel gear, the same as seen in this video. The press-fitted cog would crack, resulting in no drive of the gears. The upgraded design used a nylon instead of a plastic cog. In this case, the brass cog has loosened and moved away, disengaging from the worm gear. You will have to ensure you have some way of securing the cog, because if not permanently fixed, the fault will reoccur.

Thinking of doing this tomorrow since it’s getting cold in NewYork again, the issue I’m having is I have hot/warm air coming out of the right side of the vents but cold on the left side? I know this is a very old video but if anyone can help me out by letting me know which one it is it would be very much appreciated. I am also hearing chirping noises coming from around in between the radio and the glovebox
Froggy...going to give this a try today...on my 02 4 Runner.
BTW..the door actuators can be fix, by changing out the motor. STEALERSHIP wanted $180 for the complete unit. I found the motors on Amazon for $2 each. Easy fix, once you do it one time.

Found my issue why the blend arm broke. The hot water valve cable...does not move freely. Squirted it with Blaster.
Worked it's way down , but still hard to move. Being in Florida...I rarely use my heat.
Guess the cable is bad???

How did the worm gear move off it set location? Looks like the gear it turns has a few teeth missing thus allowing the gear to slide out of sync and be pulled by the gear away from its set location and not return to set position. Glad your fix worked.
Just from spinning & not a tight fit, no teeth missing.

I did replace the motor that controls the climate control, the one that you can co trol the face, face and feet, the front windshield by a getting a cheap ebay one for $30. That problem was fixed now I just need this one to be fixed, the one that controls hot and cold air, I couldn't seem to find a cheap replacement for that one, it seems that there's only oem denso replacements for that one which are like $100+ and I wasn't trying to pay that amount. Hopefully this solution will fix it like you said!

After 6 months of flawless operation the servo goes now only to boundary conditions-fully open or close. It could be some lube ended up on pins that touch the driving round contact plate and prevent the good contact between. I was wondering, did you use any grease on the contacts (pins) touching the driving round plate. If you did, was it conductive or dielectric grease? Thank you.
Leonid Osetinsky IIRC I just spread some of the existing lube "around". If it IS working to the limits, but not at the partial sections, seems like something else? The linkages were pretty bizarre & sort of "delicate". Maybe a linkage alignment issue?

Is this the same servo motor that controls the air coming out from the vents because on my is300 I have air coming out to my feet and face at the same time I can't close the air coming to my feet.
it's blowing out cold on the driver side and hot on passenger side. I had 1 actuator replaced last year that controls the mode. thanks

Probably not, if the controls direct the air flow where it needs to be, then your a/c system is likely at fault, see a/c not cold type videos. :(
Question: would it make that buzz noise if the AC system is off? Mine does so I’m wondering if this could still be the problem.
I think so, it's the broken gear buzzing as it tries to move air direction flaps around to different places.

The other name would be blend door actuator, it blends the hot and the cold.

Do I need to take out the mirror by taking out the door skin or can it come out from the screws under the mirror?
I AM GUESSING it's all in the mirror. I have not done a motor in the mirror.

The mechanic told me my 2001RX300 have 2 servo motors attached together, therefore it requires to change both motors. Is it true this car have 2 servo motors? He also said it is a 5 hours job coz the dash board and the air condition lines need to be drained ...... is it all true??? Please advise
None of them are "attached together". They "work together" to control hvac but they go bad one at a time. OTOH if you are going to pay a guy all that labor to get to the motors, it "might" be a good idea to replace them all. The dash does not need to come off. WATCH MY VIDEO. All from underneath. A/C lines drained is COMPLETE mechanic BS. I would strongly recommend find an honest mechanic.

You're right. This mechanic gave me a price of $600 for part and labor. I found another mechanic after your advise, he only charged me $70 for the labor and my car's clicking noise has stopped now.

Just bought a 2004 RX330 and I have that random clicking noise on the left side of the glove box that everyone complains about on their 300 series. I been told there are 4 servo motors in this car, so if I have my boyfriend replace it how do I know which servo motor it is? Do I need to replace all 4 of them? Please advise. Thanks Sue
Whichever control does not respond (hot/cold, left/right/recirc/mode) is the servo to replace, nor all 4.

On the tiny motor I see ''HB0418'' ''16'' ''2'' but unable to find this motor on line. Does these tiny motor have a particular name? I have a 2000 GS 300. Thank you, again.

small zip tie? and glue tie in place.
@@1947froggy the little steel insert on the server arm , it inserts into the lever on the heater damper. The lever keeps popping off. Cable tie and glue won't work. Needs to move freely

hi Froggy, just need some advise. i have a 2003 lexus gs300 and well besides the server motors making noise, i can only get hot and cold air on the passenger side. on the driver side i only get hot air and sometimes when it feels like it and i leave it at 65 degrees i will get cold air on both driver and passenger side. but once i raise the temperature to hot the driver side will remain in hot and the passenger side works like normal (hot and cold air). ( i tried using the duel air feature to see if i can get cold and hot air on the driver side and that still doesn't help) please help. and thank you for the video
It's all the servos, you need to personally diagnose (by touch feel look) which one(s) are not moving correctly & replace. Watch the videos again to see how I did it. Post back how you do.

Froggy, thank you for your video - it saved me a lot of time and money! But it was not an end of my sad story with AC. I hear quite similar but a little bit lower sound coming from beneath glove compartment (it is definitely none of the two actuators). And on a top of that, sometimes AC does not work at all - I do not hear fan working and air does not circulate. For example, today I was driving with AC on then stopped by a shop and after that it did not work. Did you fix any issues with AC fan? What would you recommend to start with? Lexus RX300 2001
+Anastasiia Balan I would verify that you have the correct amount of refrigerant in the system. This requires some knowledge of how a/c works etc.

+froggy I checked AC a couple of weeks ago at a repair shop - it was ok. Air does not blow - this is an issue. And during the last two or three weeks, AC blower motor uttered a rattling sound while working (not when AC off). Did you fix it ever?
+froggy Let me ask another way - is air fan blower repairable? Or it is better to by new (used) one right away?
Is the blower fan dead at all speeds? Is it intermittent working/not working?
Short answer yes, can be replaced, I recommend original/new. The MOTOR speed is regulated by a separate controller. It could be the blower motor OR the controller OR both.

+froggy Before yesterday, the blower fan was working for the most time but making a low (but distinct) rattling sound when on (both on AC mode and on air circulation mode). Once or twice when I turned it on, the fan was dead - on all speeds - and then in ten minutes or so it started working again. But since yesterday I managed to turn it on only once this morning though tried to do that probably four or five times. It did not respond when I changed speeds either.
What can you say to this?

Yes ebay or amazon sell just the motor, It's a little tricky to know which one to buy, there are hndreds of them. Best thing is to pull the mechanism and take the motor out to compare to what you need to buy.

Measure the length of the shaft & whether it has a FLAT place on the shaft & look on amazon and ebay

+Marshall S Hobbs III That may suggest that the "mode" door (which directs air to different vents - depending on the desire of the driver) may not be operating correctly. It would be one of the servos.

Watch the video again. You need to access the area under the dash where the servos live. Then operate the hvac controls and look at what moves like it should and what is not moving or looks like it's having trouble, also LISTEN to the sounds of a good servo vs a bad one.

Very similar motor as a 2005 Toyota 4Runner and the fix is exactly the same. I also used Loctite Sleeve Retainer to hold the worm gear on the shaft in addition to tapping the yoke to eliminate the play between the shaft and worm gear. Worked perfectly on mine and took about 1-2 hours. Removed the top two screws on the bracket that the motor is screwed to so I could make some room to get the bottom of the three screws holding the motor to the bracket out and then the motor itself out. To get the top rear bracket screw back in I taped it to the head of the screw driver and then threaded it in. Honestly go tell Lexus, I worked at a dealer and this failure was seen enough that the village idiot thought to take one apart and find out what was wrong, found something that worked and asked if he should say something, I was told to throw it away and move on. We were not permitted to do these kind of repairs, same with speaker foam failures, and the such. We can fix it but we will not get paid, and when you make 12/hr while the house eats 150/hr it is not worth opening that can of worms.
