  • Haruki Murakami's liminal and strange 2002 novel "Kafka on the Shore" explained and interpreted.
Alright, I have been living and breathing this book for the past two weeks. Unfortunately, I had to split this video in to two parts, so you can expect part two tomorrow.
I found incredible illustrations for this book, but can't find an artists name or which edition of the book that they came from. If anyone know this artist or which edition of the book these illustrations were printed in, please let me know!

This book was what sent me down the massive rabbit hole of surreal/liminal fiction - so happy it did. I wonder if you’ve read anything by Kobo Abe? Famous for the woman in the dunes, but specifically, The Ruined Map is an insane liminal take on identity fact and being lost, but noone has really covered it (and it’s crazy ending) on yt. Thanks!

I've read three books by Kobo Abe and I loved all three of them! Woman in the Dunes, The Kangaroo Notebook (what a wild ride that was!), and Inter Ice Age 4. I'm adding The Ruined Map to my TBR list!

I just finished the book today, you don't know how glad I was to find your channel while looking for more interpretations of the novel! I can't wait to dive into part two, but I also want to point that, as a person who is not from the U.S.A., I ruled out so many more hypothesis about the UFO before thinking about aliens. I think the cover of a suggestive book like this one probably has a greater impact on the interpretation of the novel than in other cases (on my edition there is one focused on cats). While looking at your cover, before aliens being mentioned, I thought it could be a possible representation of the head of the creature Hoshino has to face towards the end (?). But also, different cultural heritages and belief sets will induce in the reader different first impressions of what that light/reflection could have been, eventually leading to compleatly different interpretations of the novel as well. It's one of those cases where what we project on the opera it's likely more relevant than what the author intended to represent.

I really appreciate your work, man. You should consider starting a Patreon so people like me can support you. I doubt RUclips compensates you as much as you deserve! Maybe you could offer tiers of live discussion book clubs or something once a month, idk.. worth considering

Didn’t expect to see this channel cover Murakami but really excited by it. Curious on if you’ve seen the Drive My Car film? I thought it was so surprising that *that* short story from Men Without Women got chosen for this big film but when I saw it I ended up loving it. A slow burn but really poignant and well done, probably my favorite from that year.
I know it’s not the channel’s typical content - but curious on your thoughts!

I guess I was bit prepared for that overtly sexual aspect by experience with anime. I remember that quite common thought I had watching old anime was "Oh yeah, it wouldn't be anime without bit of an incest".

I read several of his books and so far not one had atmosphere comparable to this one, at least in my opinion. Was bit dissapointed by that, I really love this one.
