I interpreted secret language as like the love language between two people, and how that’s unique for each relationship.

“secret language” meaning like- only that person truly understands them, says things to them that make complete sense, etc

I’m glad you did this song. When “Folklore” came out I really enjoyed this track and still do! However, I look at it through a very different lens at present.
I agree with you about the closing line - no one should ruin themselves for someone else, especially multiple times. Let’s get some self-love and self-respect, friends!
Also, the blame shifting going on in this song is really standout… it takes two to tango, and the first-person kept going back for more! Saying someone else was solely responsible for making you into an “idiotic fool” - especially when you knew what kinda waters you were getting into is a little… Imma say it… narcissistic.

I always thought of 'secret language' as looks and touches (a love language) or having inside jokes or memories that tie to the way you interact with your partner. A secret language that is unique to every relationship.

Exactly my thoughts, it's the way words and experiences you share with someone no one else understands the depths of

A good chunk of songs off of folklore are fictional, this being one.

the whole folklore album is made of different stories, none of the songs are about her.

She only said that so people will focus more about the songs than her life. Some are about her.

to me this is a deeper take in the story of the august girl (told in her perspective), a more specific one

Maybe it's a short song because it was a short-lived affair (but the narrator could not move on yet and still devastated)

Clandestine is almost the same in Spanish and is a widely used word. I love how there are words that Taylor uses that for those who speak Spanish are super easy to understand. The same happens with "Illicit"... in Spanish it is illicit... only with the name of the song if you know a little English you can deduce what the song is about (I'm only commenting as a person who has Spanish as his mother language) 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
