  • The Bungalow (my Westerly Sealord cruising boat) goes racing with the Solo Offshore Racing Club Round the Island race 2024. Very different issues to the last and very windy Round the Island! Oh and keep your eyes on the screen for when I nearly give my self a brain injury (some would argue I already have one!).

    About Me
    I run a small business called The Solent Boat Butler and spend my days repairing, maintaining and refitting sailing boats (often Contessa 32’s due to my long experience with them). I'm mostly in the central Solent area of the UK. Being a cruising and racing sailor with many thousands of inshore and offshore sea miles logged I like to think that I bring a great deal of real-world experience to my work and help many new (and not so new) boat owners to improve and maintain their boats. When I'm not fixing boats I also provide some own-boat sail training, help owners with deliveries, provide pre-purchase inspections and deliver consultancy services to those that are refitting their own boats for cruising or racing.

    Sorry this is only available in 720 and not full 1080HD (although if watching on your phone you may not notice). I’m reaching/testing the limits of my video editing hardware so can’t render very long videos in full HD). Tried multiple times including shortening the video but decided it was better to get it out as-is rather than delay and shorten it considerably.

    Excellent watch, I found it exciting but then I go well in light airs That same weekend I was racing on Gold beach in the land yacht. No wind there also, and they cancelled the race as I was taking third place

    Well done. Fantastic weather to be on the water, especially compared to the race two weeks ago, and you finished very well despite the wind lagging for much of the race. I was imagining my Westerly Conway bungalowing along. 😅

    Fantastic video and race. Thanks George. I have thought many times that doing well in light air is the sign of a good sailor/trimmer. Just look at cruisers who are often sitting still in light air. Good Job! Just one criticism - I DO wish you would use the term "current" in place of "tide". The tide goes up and down😂

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  3 месяца назад

      Thanks, pleased you enjoyed it, I always read the comments. Fair comment on the use of the term tide and current, you are correct.

    • @windonwater3895
      @windonwater3895 3 месяца назад

      @@RefitandSail The reason I'm somewhat of a fanatic about these two terms is that here on the Chesapeake Bay (East coast US), the two aren't even in sync. In most of the areas where I sail they are out of sync by 2 hours so when it's slack high tide, you can't expect that the current will start ebbing soon. So, I focus only on current when sailing and only on Tide when anchoring. Thanks again - I do love your channel.

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  3 месяца назад

      @@windonwater3895that’s totally fair, we have similar here in some places due to the geography of the coast. The current will start flowing west off Portsmouth hbr up to two hours prior to high water Portsmouth.
      Had hoped to sail up to Chesapeake when I was in the Carib a couple of years ago but life had other plans. Will get there one day.

    I noticed that you installed soft shackles and low friction rings in your running rigging. Perhaps you have time for a video showing the details of it - I would be interested in this

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  3 месяца назад

      Soft shackles for the Genoa sheets, been using them for years on that application as they don’t snag like a bowline. Low friction rings are great for many applications, got them on the kicker/vang cascade and on the spin sheet tweakers, also used in other places onboard.

    Well done, you got on the podium! What would be the advantage to having a double-spreader rig on your boat as opposed to single spreader?

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  3 месяца назад

      Thanks. More lateral support on a twin spreader rig and my mast is very large for only one set of spreaders. Probably a heavier section mast as a result, a lighter section and double spreaders would be my preference and what the later versions of my boat got as standard.

  • @rickpyne
    @rickpyne 3 месяца назад

    Congrats on your placings, well done...just a thought re packing kites single handed, what are your thoughts on making a way of hanging your spin bags in the companionway hatch so kite can go straight into spinbag when dropping?

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  3 месяца назад

      Thanks, have considered that but it would make the drop slower if packed while dropping. I’d rather drop fast get around the mark/get the boat sailing optimally and then pack it underway

    Serious question: Are the boots just for the looks or is it somehow better than lighter shoes?

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  3 месяца назад +1

      Nothing to do with looks, I’m far too old to try and look cool (and I’m not sure that sailing boots looks cool anyway 😂). I could not find my sailing shoes, I often sail in crocks and could not find them either, don’t like to sail barefoot if running around the boat as there are too many things to stub a toe on so had to wear boots on a very hot day!
      To be fair, these Musto sailing boots (which were a rather expensive present) a great to wear when sailing, comfortable and good grip.

    I wanted to see you gybe that chute with no wind to hold it up while you swap the pole!

    • @RefitandSail
      @RefitandSail  3 месяца назад

      That would have been tricky, it’s hard enough getting a very heavy pole around the front of the babystay.
