- Review of the Soviet/Russian GP-5 Gas Mask/Respirator.
The GP-5 is the world's most produced gas masks, with production numbers going over one hundred million masks. The GP-5 also known as the ShM-62U is a very simple gas mask made from a latex hood, with lenses crimped onto the hood and an inhale/exhale valve setup at the bottom of the mask.
The mask should be available online for sale with bag and filters for less than $/£20.
Please note that the Green filters that come with these masks contain asbestos and should not be used, modern GOST or STANAG 40mm filters can be fitted to the mask which are perfectly safe to use.

I met a guy at a local convention today at a piano with a gp5-m without a filter who said he watched this channel, I gave him my mock filter because he didn't have any safe filters and I felt it would make his day just a little bit better. if You're reading this man I hope you're enjoying the mock filter maybe I'll see some more of your collection next year (SciFi on the rock)

Getting myself this for Christmas
Got my GP5 recently, loving it, been very useful here in Australia, I'm not anywhere near the fires but occasionally the smoke from the fires comes in with the wind and the air quality starts to get somewhat toxic.
I do have the the smaller fabric YHS respirators but they're too small to cover my upturned nose and large mouth, so I like the GP5, creates such a nice airtight seal, but I made sure to avoid buying the soviet filters.
Ah good was just going to say sounds good but don't use the green filter but glad you mentioned that at the end.
What filter do you use instead
Classic russian design. Brutally simple and effective
I got one of these for £5, it didn’t come with a filter but that doesn’t matter, I can easily find a brand new one or get a dummy one just for looks, but doesn’t really filter. Great buy for dirt cheap

From what I heard the French Filters will fit on it, I tried it, and hasn't screwed over my GP-5 threads.
I was planning to buy one of these for Halloween, and I was just wondering where I could get a new, non-asbestos filter. Cause the place I’m buying from also sells separate filters, but they’re green, and made in the 60’s.
You'd need modern Polish, Russian or Chinese filters, you can get them on eBay etc
New German filters work as well

I found a 40mm New NATO premium gas mask filter on eBay for $15 I want to know if that's good to use on the gas mask (also it's an isreali one so that's good)
It won't work properly as NATO threads are different from 40mm Soviet/GOST threads.

Yes you can force it on but the filter won't be air tight, it's fine for photos and stuff.

No asbestos inside. * They were manufactured in the USSR in 1970-1985 and stored in military warehouses in special wooden boxes." How do I know that the asbestos part is legit and not a lie? There are pictures of the opened filter and I don't know how that helps but I noticed that this one looked different than other ones I've seen.
I haven't seen the listing but I'd bet a small amount of money the seller is a lying scumbag and it's a regular asbestos GP-5 filter.

Recently bought a gp-5 size 3 told the guy about the filter issue an he had no idea, I linked him ur vid I got it with a bag an requested no filter since they were original uninsued filters.
Sadly a lot of sellers will just pretend they didn't know and carry on selling them.
Frankly, I'd say the GP-5M would be a smart choice over the GP5. The extra five or ten dollars/pounds gets you more in a mask then the GP-5 on it's own.
Only difference is the voice diaphragm, while I'd say that is a big plus, bear in mind it also provides a weak point to the mask, as the diaphragm will be the first section to break.

When I do cosplay/Airsoft load out i plus the outtake valve so the rubber will come off for a second so the rubber is a little bit more loose and comfortable
Darn, I just bought a GP-5 kit, and I was planning to use it as a halloween mask, but I want to use the original filter, is there any SAFE way to use the filter, or get rid of the asbestos in it? (I'd assume that'd be super difficult...) :(
I did a video on using particle filter pads cut to shape to act as a P3 filter on the masks intake which should make the filter 99% safer to use.
I have a question. Today I went out to run some errands and I was carrying my gp-5 in the satchel, but when I got back home I decided to put it on just because, and when I did, the mask slipped right on with no resistance at all, it just started doing this today. Is this normal for a mask to do after a wearing it a bit?
Yes because you've stretched it from wearing it.

Just remove the black o-ring and a nato filter can fit

What do you mean, "brute force" the 40 mm NATO filter cartridge on?? And won't that wreck the connection for the other filter cartridges you recommend? will it even seal properly after forcing the NATO filter cartridge on?? That's the one part of the video that's not clear. thank you - - it's a great video otherwise...

Also I'm lucky to own 2 C7s both 55 dated as there are 2 batches of C7 made I also noticed your exhale piece on the side is silver mine are metallic green probably a later batch but I'm not sure. There suspended to be dumped on a boat somewhere in North Sea. Surviving ones are the masks that weren't recalled or a small batch made in the 60s. Strange respirator. Good video.
I've seen a few more on eBay recently but I don't really see the point in hoarding them.

Good video there good masks for the price as you get them complete for £5+ on eBay. The name for the facepiece is Shm62 the name of the kit is GP-5 the black version was Industrial but pics of Russian military using em was only when there was a shortage. I also wondering if you tried donning the mask from back of head then pull front down I prefer it but the chin first is best way to don. There great masks for starter collectors. Great video as always
Yeah, I put about the Shm62 in the description but to me, it will always be the GP-5.
I've always found donning masks at the chin to be easiest of this type, but for some strap masks I like to pull them down.

I got a one ages ago but it was from a store that only sells repro stuff and not sure if the one I have is as so many were made, is there certain numbers/letters that indicate if it’s real or not and if so the date of both the mask and filter?

hey I was wondering if you could make a video on how to make gas mask not stick to your face. I bought a gp-5 about a week ago and have been wearing it everyday and my head gets moist and then it gets stuck
Nothing you can do about that, the material is waterproof to prevent gas getting inside, so your sweat can't escape. It's the reason why wearing an NBC suit is no fun.
BeheldSplash I have taken a little bit of corn starch and rubbed it on the parts of the mask that come into contact with my skin. I'm not sure if it's completely safe but I figured inhaling corn starch is less dangerous than talc. One drawback is you can only use it once then you need to reapply the corn starch.

Around the edge of the mask there are a bunch of blue stamps. There is: a 22, 30, 7, 2, what seems to be two lines, and a faded one. Thays six stamps on the edge, what are they and what do they mean?

Well you will suffocate if you use the filter with the plug in it, that's the factory seal. But then you risk inhaling asbestos if you actually use the original filter.
They're also good for cutting and frying onions.

gday there. Just about to buy one of these masks. I see they come in quite a few sizes. What size was yours? I have an average size head . And secondly I see the Polish FP-5 40mm canister fits it. Would this be correct. Lastly. How long would a canister work for. Do you know?
I use size 2 or 3 for Soviet masks, there's a size guide you can find with Google easily. FP-5 filters fit Soviet masks and are safe so yes use those. Third question is impossible to answer, depends on what you use the mask against.

It wouldn't work as asbestos is microscopic, you'd need a very high-quality particulate filter to block it.

Soviet filters were confirmed to have asbestos in as late as the 1990s.

Not safely, cutting open an asbestos filter is incredibly dangerous as you then allow the asbestos to go airborne.

I have a GP5 gas mask that I ordered on amazon, but it has a voicemitter on the front, and I'm not sure if it even is a GP-5 gas mask, since it looks like the PMG-2 gas mask, is it removable, or do I have to stick with it?
It's probably the GP-5M/PMG-2, you can dismantle the voice diaphragm but not remove it.
Paid $30 got a lil bag came with mask hose and filter im doing research to see if the filter is safe but from what youve said mines a green filter so proably not safe
If it came with a hose it's unlikely a GP-5, more likely the military version ShM-41. How big is the filter?

That's a lie, all GP-5 filters contain both charcoal and asbestos.
