Adventure be place, time, or temperature or all three. My motivation at 73 is the work I have to do daily to combat Afib and Type 2 diabetes. I have the gear and the girth to ride in the cold better than riding in the heat. Your videos inspire me to get out. Keep up the good work.
It is not easy to deal with cold and gray days, even less so with fibromyalgia. I admire the beauty of everything around me and in my heart the sun always rises!!! ❤
You don't seem to need inspiration, your ride looked great. A couple years back I stumbled on micro adventures as the antithesis to big spectacular trips that are very infrequent or impossible for most of us Alistair Humphrey on RUclips explains it well. I see rougher weather and seasons as my daily adventure. Commuting from my country property into town through rough weather brings a little surprise and almost always shows me something beautiful. I like searching for those differences, like the different view and muted, subtle beauty rewards when you take the chance and get out there. Almost always a great story too with frozen derailleur, roads, dark solo roads with just your own lights or the moon to light the way. Live every day, even if it is just a short ride.
It's cooler, grey and raining. The days are shorter. Just the same, I think your video will inspire me to get the bike out the next dry day. Bike paths won't be crowded.
Same here in Maryland, grey skies , not that cold but having to decide what to wear and lack of sun definitely makes it hard to get out.As always once your out it feels good.
Perfect Video to watch on a rainy Wisconsin night. Your videos from last winter have helped inspire me to be out more this winter. Otherwise, a guy can only Zwift so much without getting a taste of the real thing.
Thanks for this, Tim. It is hard to get yourself out the door when the weather turns like this. I'd also recommend a mid-winter trip south - riding in sunshine is so nice!
We always plan some kind of winter vacation just to have something to look forward to. I’m very affected by the winter gloom. It helps. Trying to keep my drink lower in winter helps but isn’t easy with more idle time and less daylight. Plus beer is good. 😊
Expectations for rides changes as it gets colder and darker. Shorter and slower (the work out starts with getting layers on!). Appreciate the active solitude. There is a wonderful peaceful quiet on winter rides.
Hey Tim still in the 80's in Galveston!!!!!😛 Just pickin on ya bro!! When it's cold and grey, or dark here I just play that old Nike saying in my head "JUST DO IT!" and tell myself that I won't regret it when I'm done' and usually don't. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment knowing that while everyone else is at home doing nothing and being depressed I went out and just did it!
It looks like the weather around Milwaukee lately. But it's dry and cool and not a time to just sit inside. Terrific bike paths you ride. I gotta get out tomorrow.
I REALLY enjoyed this. It is mighty grey out this way in western WA. Cold, with tons of rain via atmospheric rivers but, I have a One Wind Solitary Cape Shelter that I put on and it acts as a giant umbrella. Thanks.
I took my camper van to Southern AZ end of March to early April last spring. Endless opportunities for biking and hiking in the sun. At home I use a trainer in the basement but there is usually one day a week I get out. I plan to do more mtb trails this winter, in the woods out of the wind and slower pace.
I grew up in Columbus so I get ya. In 96 Columbus had fewer sunny days than Seattle . Moved to LA in 97 LOL. That said , I love the riding you folks have when the weather allows . I got to spend 11 weeks on a job near mystic CT and it was totally awesome . Always thought a fat tire bike in snow could be fun
Gotta keep the rolling, though I agree grey can be tough. I have a winter commuter with a Alfine 8 internal drive hub that does not like freezing temps. I found servicing with new grease helps. I have a new touring partner, so every open winter day ride I can catch so I can keep up with her is the motivating driver.
As the sun’s presence diminishes I find myself relying on sending out a text to cycling friend asking, begging, and often shaming people into a ride. Write the text, drink a beer (or two), close your eyes, and push send. Committed with no way to back out - always get at least one other mastic! Your video are also quite inspirational.
I live in Portland Oregon and it's rained pretty much everyday for the past 3 weeks. I'm already fed up with winter. Oh wait, it's still autumn. Damn it.
I did a 40+ mile loop this year that included Iron Horse and Mahoning Valley, loved going around Deer Creek. I also rode by the Molly Stark Sanatorium, which I hadn't seen before. I enjoy riding enough that I don't usually need motivation to do it, but this winter I have a goal of riding to work once a week unless it's snowy/icy/rainy+cold. Hopefully I get in at least one day of riding per week that way.
I’m definitely going to check out this route. I live in NE Canton, not too terribly far from Maize Valley. I could start this ride from my house. It’ll probably add 10-15 extra miles.
Re: your question about motivation at this time of year. I tie my rides to errands, and often find myself running the errand and winding my way back. Today for example. Needed some staples. It was raining. I geared up, went right to the store, and meandered my way back. Otherwise, no 'scheduled' rides.
40 miles and 1200 feet of riding, I’m jealous! No matter which way I ride it’s 100feet of climbing per mile average, Every 10 mile ride is minimum 1,000 feet of elevation gain, 0 chilled out routes! It has made me fitter though for sure. It’s funny when I visit flatter places like the Netherlands all the cyclists want hills 😂
It's currently 1°C (33°F) we've had just over 150mm of rain since November 1st with our first bit of snow today and a winter weather bomb with 200mm of rain and hurricane-force winds for the next 48hrs. Oh and it's dark at 4pm.... Winter life on Vancouver Island.... So cool 🙄 Needless to say riding is greatly affected at this time of year. SAD is a real problem for many here. Those of us who can afford to, do get away to brighter, warmer places. It's key.
Seasonally depressive here. The singular motivation I find to ride in winter since I no longer live in a place I can bike commute, is having someone to ride with. If I don't then I most likely won't, which is 95% the case Nov-Feb.
where did she get that saddle bag? Rivendell? I totally want that. On motivation. Tapas. Oh man, tell me about it . I'm trying to find a decent truck so I can change and improve my life. That's been tricky. Just spent 4 hours today dealing with an app for an automotive scan tool device that actually looks promising. One thing about vintage bikes is they're not mysterious like cars. Or even modern bikes. But we know it's all about time, riding that tech learning curve. The trick to staying motivated in winter is to wear spandex 24-7. No more gear searching/fumbling. I totally want a hipster- camper wearable sleeping bag suit. Best idea ever. Ride with that on your E-bike to the beer store. With no mask on. Why not?
Yup...low motivation is real. Honestly, Tim it would probably help if I did a better job keeping all of my cold weather riding gear in one spot. I think I get annoyed with knowing how long it takes to get ready for going out that it becomes psychological.
Hey curious what type of bike computer do you both use? I have been looking to get one. currently using my phone and strava app. Do you like what you are using and have you done a review on it? if so can you point me to that video? love your videos man!
We use Wahoo Elemnt Bolts. We like them because the are small and simple. Some people prefer Garman's with their touchscreens and more options. If you search at the top of my channel for Wahoo some vids will come up....but I would say you are better off searching RUclips in general for some in depth reviews. Check DC Rainmaker & GP Lama. The one thing I will say is stick with Garman or Wahoo - there are some other brands but I see deal breakers in all of them.

Awesome.
Thanks!
It was great running into you and Erin!
Good ride. Any day outside is okay!

Bring on the snow for Fat Biking!
It's cooler, grey and raining. The days are shorter. Just the same, I think your video will inspire me to get the bike out the next dry day. Bike paths won't be crowded.
The paths not being crowded is one of the best things about winter for sure.
Cold , grey or even dark is ok, but cold wind above 20mph is really a deal breaker . Hope you find opportunities to ride this winter
The wind can be a real joy killer for sure!

What a amazing country.Under the sky.
A trip in the middle of winter to a warm weather locale like Florida to ride is just what the doctor ordered to get through the long winter.
Thanks for this, Tim. It is hard to get yourself out the door when the weather turns like this. I'd also recommend a mid-winter trip south - riding in sunshine is so nice!

I think the trees with star shaped leaves at Mount Union are sweetgum trees.
Thanks!

Much needed encouragement to get out into the grey and ride 👍
Great ride- I usually switch to backpacking this time of year but I’m really wanting to try some cold weather riding as well
I get that. I try to get in some hikes when it is cold and snowy. I usually end up still riding my bike these days - even when the motivation is low.

70/30 riding hiking in summer. Maybe 20/80 in winter

looking for the old trial lines in the forest. marking trails and riding dirt as the season changes.

Winter trip 🏆
I grew up out there
This ride would be a good excuse to get back there

How do you drink beer, then ride?
It depends. At home it would be from a can. At the bar the bartender brings it in a glass.
